Use a counter. Have the pads set to opby object (or a similar phrase)

Have a counter (default value: 3), make each of your good ones ACTIVATE the counter, have the counter ACTIVATE your effect. With counters, they work opposite to what you'd expect, activate lowers the value, deactivate ups it.
