Dungeon Master Poster

David Darrow was selling some original prints of the DM poster on eBay. I found them last week. I was 100% sure I placed a bid, I certainly remember putting in a max figure, however, the auction ended and I received no notifications of a win or lose. Checking my eBay account, there's no record of me placing a bid.

I wonder if I'm going extremely mad or I just imagined the whole thing... either way, I'm disappointed :-(

That's pretty awesome.

Why not message the seller and say you missed his auction but if he relists it you'll put a bid in?

I did email hm that very question and he said he'd sold them all. :-( I'm really confused what happened here, I'm 99.9% sure I placed a bid!!!

How much did you bid?

Not much, $20 for starters. The link I provided above says the auction closed with no bids. The whole thing seems a bit odd, I wonder if maybe he closed the auctions and cancelled bids because he'd sold them off site? Oh well, speculation won't get me a poster :(

I emailed David again via eBay, just to say "Oh well, that's a shame" but I also mentioned that I was convinced I'd placed a bid. He wrote back:
Another buyer offered to buy all 4 for a price we agreed on so I made a buy it now auction for that price and the deal was closed immediately. I then canceled the existing auction as "Item no long er available." These are all provisions within the acceptable policies of eBay.
So now I'm really not sure if I did place a bid or not, and if so, did he cancel it? eBay's rules allow that which I have no problwm with, but it seems odd not to have received any kind of warning email.

Maybe I really didn't place a bid? I think Chaos has got to me!

Of course, it's possible that the sale was made to someone who frequents this forum and they are willing to part with one..... ;-)

You placed a bid and he canceled it. I don't think eBay will automatically notify you in that case, which is a flaw in their system, probably.

Incidentally, what he did was within the letter but not the spirit of the seller bid cancellation rules. It was pretty sleazy and you should probably be glad you didn't have to deal with this guy.

Pretty interesting story :)
Moreover, I have also seen this auction and take my chance to ask one question to David about these posters.
Here is the answer, for the Encyclopaedia archives for sure:

Question: 19/08/2010
"do you know what was the context for the publication of this poster? It was include in some game Box? or just for advertising inside shops?"

Answer from David R. Darrow: 20/08/2010 16:35
"My recollection is that the posters were distributed with multiple orders (to shops) as advertising, and also given away or sold at trade shows. I do not know the print-run quantity."

With Greatstone responding thus, I'm pretty convinced now that Christophe was the buyer of the 4*. Do you want to sell one, Christophe?

*There is a weird logic to my conclusion. I could be totally wrong.

I wonder which weird logic, but you're right :)

I'll probably sell one or two after I receive them.

Gambit: weird logic, but we can perhaps find a logic here in fact...

Christophe: What?
Christophe, is it right? C'est bien vrai? Tu as recupere ce superbe lot?
I am now officially requester to buy the 2nd one from you, for sure! Say your price!

I'm so glad I'm not going mad either Gambit! I've got a little story just to prove your sanity, seen as eBay doesn't seem to track bids on cancelled auctions:

Okay, I was searching eBay last week for Nexus and SNES DM (I know, I know - shame on me for not having them already), and nearly passed out with excitement when I saw the auction in question right at the bottom of the search page, in the international sellers section. It was Friday night / Sat morning and saw it was ending at 02:00 ish Sunday morning and at the time, there was one bid on it (yourself, no doubt) at $0.99. With my birthday coming up next month, I thought it would make a nice present and with me having the only PayPal account in the house, I'd buy it on someone else's behalf and they'd give me the money back.

I went out Saturday morning to check my bank and all, just to see how much I could go up to if it came to a bidding war. Comfortable with the amount I saw, I thought I'd log on and at least register a bid. Because I'm out and about I logged on eBay using the mobile version and couldn't find the auction anywhere. Limitations of the software I thought, so I tried searching the full site using the phone's built in web browser. Still no dice. I get home mid-afternoon and load up the bookmark on the computer and all I get is that the auction finished with 0 bids. I assumed that either the seller had closed the auction early either due to a high offer or regret with selling the items, and resolved that the poster wouldn't appear for sale again :(

Last week was a busy week for me, so I toally missed this thread, but I'm happy to know that all of the posters went to a good home :) Congrats Christophe!

It is a bit sucky that eBay don't send you a note when the seller cancels the auction. It would at least be polite!

While I'm pleased that the posters went to a good home, I do think it's a bit naff that Darrow cancelled the auction. True fans were clearly bidding on those posters and the fairest thing would have been to continue with the auction to allow those fans to (a) determine the value, and (b) own a piece of DM history.

Jealous?

I'll set an auction to sell one on eBay and will post here when I do so.

Jealous? That depends how much you paid for them ;)

Did he sign them? I can't see any signatures.

The two at the bottom of the photo are signed over the lower part of the woman's blue robe.
They are all in excellent condition after all those years.

No, this one is not signed.
I bought two signed copies, I sold one to greatstone and kept the other.

:-( Ah, ok, I'm not interested then. Good to luck to other bidders.
