You forgot the other important thing that happened between those two years in this month - you were born :)

And my brother was born 25 years ago (in September). :D My parents were very worried about my mother's pregnancy and the Chernobyl disaster, but fortunately, nothing went wrong. Only my brother is exceptionally intelligent.

400 years ago today, Shakespeare died. But, more importantly, 500 years ago today the Bayerische Reinheitsgebot was signed in the city of Ingolstadt, defining (or, rather, limiting) the ingredients of beer! April 23, 1516, was a glorious day! Hallelujah! :P

It seems strange that people are celebrating Shakespeare's death - shouldn't they celebrate his birth instead, or something? It seems weird to be saying "Yaaay, so-and-so died X years ago today!". If it was someone not very nice, sure, celebrate the day they finally buggered off from the planet and left the world in peace, but someone like Shakespeare, whose life had such an impact on our language and stuff? Seems weird. Unless it's a way to get back at him for all the years of having to study his plays at school :D.

Yeah, well, you're right, of course, this is not about celebrating, of course, this is about remembering, reminding, getting back. And we also don't know the exact day of Shakespeare's birth, anyway. And my major point was the beer.

I had an english teacher whose fad was to deny Shakespeare. According to him, Francis Bacon wrote the plays, he could see this in all sorts of hidden messages.
He wrote books, bugged so much, he was declared "persona non grata" in England. :D

I love Shakespeare's plays, of course, but I absolutely adore his sonnets. They're fantastic, one of the best pieces of poetry I've ever read. It's incredible that this was written four centuries ago!

25 years ago, on April 30 1991, the last East-German "Trabant" car was produced. In the same month, also the last "Wartburg" car was made, marking the end of the smelly era of East-German car-making  .
