One more for the road...

I recently reincarnated my old trusty friend from 1987. What´s the first thing to do? Beat CSB obviously...
Gonna take me at least an hour, maybe two. (Amiga mice are kinda hinky)

Cool, good luck - I presume you have no DM party to import so are having to start from scratch with CSB characters? When was the last time you played? I mean, was it recently enough that you can roughly remember the layout of the dungeon, what links to where, and where you need to go in order to do what needs doing? I'm gonna guess that you do, otherwise you wouldn't be predicting a completion time of an hour or two

DONE!
Took longer than expected. ~3,5 hours - Including numerous piss & cig brakes and refurbishing one Amiga mouse.
Reincarnated Plague whom I renamed "Jaska The Rapist".
Surely, I knew map layout, Tips & tricks beforehand.
Reminded how different it really feels to use real hardware vs. emulation...

Poor Plague. And he was only trying to see what the real world looked like...without his meds.

Correct me if I´m wrong, but isn´t Plague supposed to a female character? Hidden somewhere in the code. IIRC...
Yeash... Nice weekend messing around with an old friend while totally drunk.
Amiga owners, get a modern accelator - It´s worth every penny!

Oh no! Now Plague is also a female??? I spent years cross-dressing Wuuf, not realizing she was a princess (a bearded lady, for sure).

I never completed CSB. Using various guides I managed to cast a couple of the things into the pit but I could never get the 4th one!

You can sneak one of them without having to complete "Part Two" of that class's path. If I remember rightly, it's Dain that you can skip (hooray!) by sneaking on fake pits in the Ros section and getting around the Corbum Pillar to another side. Or I suppose you could go the other way, from Dain to Ros, but pretty sure Dain is a pain in the arse (I certainly find "Part One" of it to be so), so better to do it that way around

.

Yes one can sneak a corbum, as said. But not the mentioned one.
I did get the Ku corbum this way, that came handy because I had been enable to enter the upper Ku domain.

Ah okay - Ku is one I normally get legit, because I tend to find Ku (both parts) to be the easiest/most fun. Dragons, yay

. Maybe I normally sneak around
from Ku, then. I mean, I've only done it once or twice and that would've been, like ten or more years ago, so it's been a while

At the four corbums pillar there is a hidden way that connects Ku and Ros

I didn't know where to post my latest adventure, seeking to break all known records for Longest Run in CSB.
I was running around, fighting and exploring, when I realized I didn't have the EXECUTIONER (Not Hardcleave. Thanks Ameena.). Huh? I had it earlier.
I guess I saved the game before facing the four brutes in that room, so I was skipping the one path to get that.
I also remembered the section with multiple dragons behind grated doors. I spent hours trying to locate it. Ha.
How on earth did I get through CSB the first time (when did it come out?), back in the late 80's?
I knew no one who was playing it (same with DM earlier). I had no 'cheats' and no internet, unless you consider the 'fax-sound' internet access.
Odd thing too was how easily I finished it back then. I'm enjoying myself anyway.
P.S. I found a fake wall in the DDD room, explaining why the GOR coins were not giving anything back (hidden cove).
Wow, CBS was a wonderful addition to the DM group.
Using 'edit' to add a question: Is the leg plate the last item a person can get from the GOR coin slot in the DDD area?

Presumably when you say "Hardcleave", you mean "Executioner" - no Hardcleave in CSB

.
CSB came out in '89 (DM in '87). And yeah, no Internet back then

. When me and my dad played the games back in the day (when I was like, six or so), we had a guide for DM but nothing for CSB. Well, presumably there was a manual with the game but I didn't read those. My dad did know about chucking the corbums into the Ful Ya Pit but I dunno if that's 'cause it says so in the manual or because he'd found out elsewhere. But we had no outside help with the game that I know of, though.
Can't help you with your "vending machine" question, I'm afraid - I don't bother with it or with the coins in general as they don't provide anything that I ever actually use

I'm still wandering around the dungeon, this time through.
Finally figured out how to get to the wing key.
Found the ruby key and opened the KU way.
Haven't found a place to use the Sapphire or Topaz keys.
I even found a second pair of Boots of Speed (better than PF Flyers, if anyone is old enough to remember those).
I was going back through again, trying to find new stuff, and found a group of (sneaky) Antmen, hiding in the hidden wall to the right.
I decided to take them on bare handed. Took awhile but was a new experience.
The alcoved behind them gave me the diamond edge. I found the sidesplitter earlier but I'll probably retire it for my latest weapon find.
I've only found one Corbum. Five keys of B (I carry four around).
Wish I could buy one of those dogs. They'd be great for lighting campfires.

Sounds like things are going pretty well. Neither the Sapphire nor the Topaz Keys are essential for progression, but the Ruby is. Plenty of random stuff all over the place for you to poke around in and get some possibly-helpful loot

Odd thing about the Dragon's Den: I've been there three or four times but can't seem to find it again.
I believe it's in the KU path. Am I doing something to bypass that 'friendly' dragon that shows up after the initial visit?

Dragon's Den is in "Part Two" of Ku*, yes. You can't miss it as you need to go through it to progress.
*Through the door unlocked with the Solid Key in the DDD area.

Part Two of Ku. I must be going through Part One and somehow missing Part Two.
Any way to be sure I am taking Part Two?
I have had fun with the force field you need to trap a skeleton in, then kill it on the other side of the gate to open the gate.
I've been through before and opened the wall to the left, so the skeletons were exiting and I couldn't seem to kill them.
I finally just kept coming back with extra rocks, so I could make a large pile in front of the gate.
Anyway, I finally killed one with rocks, getting that crazy door open again. Ha.
I'm still wondering how I ran through this game so quickly, back in the day (late 80's?).
The scorpions remain my favorite creatures in the game, as far as looks.

So, "Part One" of each of the Ways starts at the Junction of the Ways and meets up at the DDD. From the DDD, which is like a larger, more convoluted puzzle of a junction, there are four doors, each one leading into "Part Two" of its respective Way and needing a key to unlock it, obtained in "Part One". Each "Part Two" leads up to one side of the Corbum Pillar (though you can "cheat" at one point and sneak across fake pits to get around the Pillar to grab a second one), and having a Corbum on you will open a door near the Pillar room (one in each section) leading up to the topmost level, where there is some more stuff and eventually the Ful Ya Pit where you chuck the Corbums to end the game.
The bit you're talking about with the skellies and the door is right outside the entrance to "Part Two" of Neta.
In case you're not sure, the keys you need are...
Ku -
Solid key
, found at
the bottom-most level of the dungeon, dropping off the big Dragon there (he also drops a bunch of armour and bones.
Ros -
Emerald key
, found in
the Dragon Maze, that area with all the false walls and "baby", easy-to-kill Dragons. The key is on the floor somewhere, it doesn't drop off a Dragon.
Dain -
Ruby key
, found around the
area with all the Flying Snakes, not far from "Bridge" and "Prove you are a Wizard", with a bunch of pits and other shit.
Neta -
Turquoise key
, found in
a room where it's flying back and forth in a chest, along with a scroll, so you need to step in and let them clonk you in the head so they land on the floor and can be picked up.

I think I've opened most of the secondary ways, through DDD.
I've been wandering around without a corbum (dropped two of them just before going upstairs at the DDD). Ha.
And I thought I was so clever, finding a second pair of boots of speed (there are four, correct?).
I liked the Zooooom section. Glad they brought that idea over from DM. It was/still is a real challenge, turning and getting goodies.
I'm pretty sure I've gotten everything from that area.
My work situation is going to really get in the way of any gameplay for a couple of weeks.
Glad I was able to get corbum #2.
I've visited the corbum pit. I haven't thrown anything in yet.

Is there a chance I have to have certain things in my inventory for some doors to open?
I have a Dex Helmet, two sets of boots of speed, two corbums, five keys of B, also topaz, sapphire, onyx and cross keys, plus just added a Falchion.
I'm enjoying seeking new areas, as well as getting both characters into the Master sections of all four skills.
I just find it odd that I haven't gotten through some doors, although I have been able to use the lockpicks a number of times.

I think all those keys are "optional" ones - in my previous post I listed the ones you need for the four Ways, behind spoiler tags which the forum for some reason now forces onto a huge ugly white stripe that takes up an entire line rather than a nice little black block that just covers the text without messing up the layout.
I think it's kind of a given in CSB that there will be areas you end up not getting to, whether because you never found the key to get in or because you didn't bash your head into the right wall/find the secret button/fall down the right pit

. The only things you actively
need are those four keys (and actually only three, because you can "cheat" one Corbum) and the four Corbums. I think everything else can be worked around in various ways due to how many secret passages and stuff there are.

Finishing the game is not my actual purpose (the ending/finishing video is not all that impressive). I've been exploring, more than anything.
I just keep noticing certain doors I haven't been able to open.
So, any chance I have to have something special in my inventory for some doors to open (I already know about having a Corbum)?

I don't know. It's only through watching the recent play through from Gears of Games on YouTube (and seeing the comments there) that I even knew that having certain things in your inventory could have any effect on monster spawns and stuff

Yes, on FUL YA - pit level / Topmost / Last / Level 00, even seemingly random objects have great effects...
A. A Skeleton Key or Lock Picks (used 7 times) will open the door but Lock Picks will also activate the Demon generator.
B. Two Keys Of B or Lock Picks (used twice) will open the door. Four Keys Of B are required to open both the door and the wall.
C. A Topaz Key, a Master Key or Lock Picks will open the door, but a Topaz Key will also deactivate the fireball holes.
D. A Crown Of Nerra or an Orange Gem in your inventory will prevent Zytaz generation around (00,25,35) when walking at (00,17,30).
E. A Pendant Feral in your inventory will prevent Zytaz generation at (00,25,34), (00,24,35), (00,26,35) and (00,25,36) when walking at (00,25,35).
F. A Dexhelm in your inventory will prevent Demon generation at (00,47,21) when walking at (00,41,18).
G. A Flamebain in your inventory will prevent Fireball launch at (00,23,29) when walking at (00,23,20).
H. Powertowers in your inventory will prevent Demon generation at (00,34,20) when walking at (00,31,18).
I. The door will open if you have Boots Of Speed in your inventory.
J. An Ekkhard Cross in your inventory will prevent generation of Demons at (00,35,34) when walking at (00,31,36).
K. A Corbum in your inventory will open the door at (00,22,14) when walking at (00,29,15).
L. A Boulder in your inventory will open the door.

Thanks Mickey. I don't know what actual doors (ETC.) the letters refer to but the keys of B and lockpicks being used a number of times will be something I'll keep in mind. Having a BOULDER??? in your inventory??? Ha. I'd better invest in a few 'strength' potions, right?

People often forget, they were supposed to relay on Hint Oracles Assistance while playing CSB.
Often vague, but always helpful.
