Hi I creating almost the same but in Delphi and DelphiX component. Yes the problem is with graphics is there anybody who knows how to extract all files? Or know about some usefull graphics? I use for my project original DM, DM Java and (i cant find the link). My version will contain:

Everything from DM, Chaos, DM II,
+ multiplayer support
+ Mapedit (80% complete)
+ Portrait editor (100% complete)
+ Items editor (100% complete)
+ Monsters editor (10% complete)
+ Quests editor (0% complete)
+ Spells editor (0% complete)
+ Multiplayer modes
+ Cooperative
+ DM
+ Teams support
+ Last man standing
+ atc...
+ support for 16 players
+ special maps for all this modes
+ TCP/IP
+ will look like Battle.net form blizzard
+ You could use your characters again and again in games
+ Play multi or single with same characters
+ Dynamic difficulty
+ You cant set up everything on the sreen
+ position of the players, game screen, spells, moving....
+ fully configuratable (keys, video, sound, music)

Engine is approximately 80% complete i thing i will finish this game during this holidays. So it look the Autumn or winter will be first release for playing. And one important thing. The game will be free and u could download it from some location. I dont know now where but i'll let u know just in time. If u have some interest or ideas u can mail me to:

im an addicted d2 player, so a bnet like atmosphere would be really great for me (with your mainchar as chat avatar )
if i can help u with stuff like playtesting, lemme know (i cant code at all, but i can play...)
