New strategy for defeating Mongor discovered?

Post by RogerS »

Hi,

I wanted to see if it was possible to find a new way to telefrag the Ku dragon by tricking him into following me into the junction teleporter at 9,22,23 and subsequently trapping him in the junction, then going back to the teleporter and stepping into it again.

When I went down to level 9 I found it swarming with worms, so after killing a couple of them I ran to 9,21,23 and decided to try to see if a worm would follow me first. What I found is that it seems to be impossible for a monster to step on the tile at 9,20,23. Since there were quite a few worms in the area at that point, I decided to take advantage of this.

I would take a step forward or sideways to 9,20,23 and berzerk at a (pair of) worm(s), then quickly step back to 9,21,23 again and they couldn't do anything about it.

After a short while, Mongor joined the party. Initially he stopped at 9,18,23 and kept hitting worms that were walking at 9,19,23, helping thin the herd for me, and later stepped forward to 9,19,23,

I kept waiting between his fireballs (and turning left to dodge the ones that were fired on the side I was standing on) and stepping forward and berzerking him after he had spit one out. When I placed a flask in my left hand, it also gave me plenty of time to brew Ku, Ya and Vi potions (to deal with occasional worm bites coming from 9,20,24) in between his volleys.

Occasionally he would move and seemed to teleport to a different tile, which sometimes allowed me to attack him when he was walking at 9,20,24 instead. I suspect that 9,20,23 might actually be a creature teleport that teleports a monster to a nearby tile, which would explain some of the weird movement I saw from the worms as well.

All in all probably the easiest fight I've had against this dragon so far. It still took quite some time though due to his high HP.

Has anyone else discovered this before?

Interesting. Of all the monster types that can survive on level 9, only
a giggler would survive the 'Junction Teleporter'.

Level 9 is divided into four quadrants. Why did the designers
prevent monsters from entering the 'Junction Teleporter' from
the SW and SE quadrants but not from the two northern quadrants?

A giggle can get into the SW quadrant but I cannot think of any
way for a giggler to enter the SE quadrant.

Also, in the SE quadrant the designers carefully protected any worms
from committing suicide in the 'Junction Teleporter' and then
intentionally placed another suicide teleporter within their easy
reach at 09(27,35). Why?

09,27,35 is a teleporter? It's not marked on the map on the DM encyclopedia.

If that's a suicide teleporter for the worms, maybe they put it there as a way to make sure the room doesn't get too overcrowded.

Nor does it show the teleporter at 09(20,23).

Good point. The map there could probably do with an update.

Where does 9,27,35 teleport to, and which tile(s) does 9,20,23 teleport to?

9,20,23 goes to 9,19,24.
9,27,35 goes into a wall at 7,30,21
