Feel the fear... and do it anyway

Post by Gambit37 »

Hi there all, just wanted to share the following...

I'm currently in the process of setting myself up as self employed, offering web design/development services and cd-rom production. After a couple of crappy years, this is a positive time for me, and although I don't yet have any work and money is very short, I am hopeful of a bright future.

I'm currently trading under my own name as a freelancer, but eventually will be running it as a business. The proposed name is Syra Studios. Funny that, I wonder where the name came from... in fact, it's actually a greek island (another name for Siros). I like it as it sounds mysterious. It's a good name as it doesn't tie me in to any one service and as I extend my skills, I'd later like to add photo retouching, portraits and custom 3D objects... that's later down the line though.

Anyway, if you know of anyone who's currently looking for a website at competitive rates, I'd be very grateful of the contact!... :)

Gambit, does Syra Studios have a webiste or a portfolio. I imagine that is going to be the first question asked by a lot of people? It will show them that you are capable of doing what you claim to be able to do?

... Even tho we've all seen screenies of the Codex and so we know you can :)
Regards,

Andy

You can view my current portfolio at www.resonantedge.com. Syra Studios is an eventual name I'll be using once I'm more established.

That looks very professional. BTW I could not help noticing three sample screenshots from the DM Codex as examples and a link to some pages. Would you not post them here as well? I had a look at the results and even if it's surely nowhere near finished I'm positive they would be appreciated. Well, your choice - I did not want to put the link here since the pages are your intellectual property, just asking.

Cool site - is there a reason you have placed the select styles at the end, rather than seperately at the start? I would have thought giving this instant idea of the variety of your design talents would be a good idea.

Good luck with your venture!

Thanks for the comments, PitD. The Codex sample site was initially password protected (a couple of regulars here were allowed passwords to have a look at it). But it wasn't very sensible to keep the protection there if I want prospective clients to view it, so it's now viewable by anyone....

Beowuuf, I've already registered the .com and .co.uk (all I can afford right now). One of my requirements for the name was that the .com must still be available for me to register (there is still a certain amount of prestige attached to .com domains). You wouldn't believe how many other names I've come up with that had already been taken.

A few others that I like are Antix Media, Arda Design plus a couple of 'trendy' single word names such as Kologee and Foozol.

OK then a vote; how many of you like Syra Studios? Does it sound silly? :?

Oh, and yes, that's me in the photo -- in the most arty 'can't quite see my face' pic that I could find! :D

Ah I've finally decided to register after all this time..but anyways..

I personally see nothing wrong with the name, there are company names that look and sound sillier.

I looked at your porfolio and just like what others have posted I can say that I think that your Web design/dev. serviecs are top notch indeed. I just can't pitcure you not getting any form of business from anyone(in fact I can take a guess that your inbox is full of web design request right now :D )

If only I can get 10 years in a job to get me started..

Good Luck Gambit.

Syra studios is good, but i think resonant edge is a better one. I could see Kologee getting udner the skin as a good name, maybe not Foozol as much! : )

Cool -- thanks for all the positive comments guys!

As you said Fuzzface, I still like resonant edge, but I've used it for some time and have discovered that a lot of people have trouble saying it -- it's a bit of a mouthful. Plus it doesn't really say anything -- it's TOO mysterious! At least with Studios in the name it gives a hint of what the site might be about.

Kologee looked OK, but the more I say it out loud the more it sounds like a degree or some arcane disease...

Res edge will eventually become a personal site, probably a blog or something, once I've sorted out a proper 'business' site.

Answer to beowuuf about selecting styles: it was an afterthought I added to the site, and as it's a kind of 'user prefs' part I think it warrants being at the end of the list.

Do you think having several of the same design but just changing the colours is a bit naff?

Yup, they need a sub-set of their own - i think the bottom three, the last one on the previous row and the default stand out as thumbnails - having the nine with five the same doens't do justice to the bottom ones

I'd also go for resonant edge, it's got the most professional touch. Syra studios is less so, but has the advantaqge of being short and nice to remember.

It's typical isn't it -- you've all siad that Resonant Edge is cool, yet I've got to a point where I find it dull and too 'prententious'. I wanted something more classic, hence Syra Studios... oh well

Perhaps I will keep resedge for now and use Syra Studios for some as yet unknown future project...

Lol, software heaven versus ftl?

Syra studios sounds ok, but the studios part does sound more visual media oriented, rather than the whole package. Maybe somehingelse with Syra...Syra Media? Syra...something....

Maybe you shouldask again when we've had the time to become dis-illusioned with RE too? : )

And how about shortenign it to Res Edge?

Definitely not resedge -- sounds a bit like 'residue' which I really wouldn't want to encourage!...

There's nothing to say against Syra Studios as a name - I just don't find it a name to remember if you are not familiar with DM or something where you can find the name Syra. That's why I would go for Resonant Edge.

I'm working on a new, cleaner, leaner, more professional looking version of my resonant edge website.

I'd be grateful for any comments on these variations of banner graphics -- the logo/splash at the top of the page (ignore the body text for now, this will be much simpler and cleaner in future)

I might go back to the other logo though, which you can see at the site itself:

Personally i like 2 and 4 best
mainly 4, how about tryign it with the writing in the position of 2, and the same alternate colours (grey on the bottom of the logo instead of top)

i like the explosion feel as it makes it subconciously more dynamic, and the rounder resonant edge logo makes the top seem less harsh, but i think that professionally the position and colours of two are better - the orange on the botom just makes it seem like you have alternate bands of grey and orange at the top there, and for some reason it puts me off a little!

there you go, a rambling first impression : ) i reserve the right to go 'eew' at a mixture if you create it too!

I'm currently between 1 and 7. Though I still like the old style logo and might try a design using that as well....

hmm, torn between 11 and 12, i think i prefer 12 the old version of the logo with the alternating curve manages to work

the sidebar - what's going in there?
at the moment it looks very dead, although i'm sure the grey background will be fine depending on what's on top of it

no real constructive critisism, i think you've nailed it, i just pprefer 12
dislike 13, not because it isn't nicely matched, just somehow the greys are in the wrong place and make it seem slighly dead
