Conflux 2 - Small question

Can someone give me a yes or no answer to the following question (so that it doesn't spoil things for other players).

Are pits (in particular the one behind The High Sentinel) the only way into the lower levels?

OK, another yes or no answer:

I've seem to have rerached the limit of what's mappable in my particluar game. But there are clearly areas I haven't yet explored. Can some areas only be got into using certain characters?
