Re: Films you should watch, books you should read

I admit that back then I was also partly fascinated by the book, but as you grow older you quickly realize that it's all basically gratuitous. Which applies to most books by Stephen King in my opinion...

The movie is definitely unbareably cheesy :).

This is me

Hi,

now that I find myself returning to these wonderful forums regularly I might post an introduction to myself as well.

I'm 28 years old from Saarbruecken, Germany and I manage to still hang around at uni trying to finish my masters thesis in (guess what) Computer Science. Now this isn't that ...

Re: Films you should watch, books you should read

A chinese ghost story

Yeah, that one was really good.

Also recommended if you're into Asian stuff or generally wapanese:

Ghost in the Shell (confusing on first watch but great action and athmosphere esp. for Cyberpunk lovers)

Ghost Dog (by Jim Jarmusch) -- probably the best Samurai movie ...

Good responses. Okay, let me rephrase the question:

How much impact should hidden skills have? Because in DM it seems they pretty much define your character on a fairly low level. Considering that they are in fact pre-fab characters, this probably makes sense . . . but if you made the character ...

ST was faster and had better sound, amiga made up with more colors/better graphics for that. but since most games (like DM) were developed for both machines parallel, neither of them could really use its advantage. next to the very atmospheric ( ) footsteps and the map in csb, both versions ...

I found this feature always one of the most interesting concerning character development in DM. The 'dmweb' site has some info about the hidden skills, especially which amulets affect which hidden skills, but it doesn't explain them completely -- so the mystery remains to a certain extent, at least ...

Also in my defence ! I tried years ago to complete DM without going up any levels at all. Just dodging and using gates and stuff (along with magic boxes) to do any necessary killing. Just a couple of spells needed along the way. I think I did it it too though it was in 1989 or something so Im a bit ...

NOOOOO!!!! Mophus as an avatar!!!! *runs*

LOL, I was waiting for the first reaction about that. I love the picture,
it's such a cheesy smile.

Oh, um, well... I have to say I envy you for not having played CSB yet. I wish I could relive the sensation of playing that game without knowing what ...

I used to have a teacher in high school who was really laid back and nice,
and he was playing games (the teacher was playing computer games,
quite special back then!). So I approached him asking him what game
he likes most, and his reply was (obviously) "Dungeon Master". I must
have been 14 or 15 by ...

Thanks George and Paul for replying. You both certainly have your
good points and reasons for doing it the way you do.

Regarding my suggestion of looking at the source code of CSBWin: I
was not suggesting to grab code off CSBWin and put it into RTC. My
point is that some of the game mechanics code ...

You really need to read the early posts from the RTC archive and the introdcution to RTC on the page you downloaded it from.
I've certainly done that (I belong to the people who actually RTFM :) ).
It's not open source because it's a personal project.
I got the feeling it moved away great ...

RTC is made from scratch and has good potential. The main problem is, it's a standalone coding project so it grows too slowly... just like the other clones.

I must disagree here with you. I think that saying something is faster because of an open source development is a bit foolish.

Some general questions, hopefully not too FAQ

Hi all,

I've started playing RTC (and comparing it to the original) just a few
weeks ago, so now I've got several questions. I hope they haven't
been answered too often before and that maybe the author could
provide some original insight:
Why is the project not open source? I get the feeling this ...

The Atari ST version, by the way, isn't that bad. I too
came from the Amiga version, but the only real difference is that the
sounds monsters make while moving are missing. This is annoying, but I
can live with it.

Maybe I'm too picky about this, but for me, having the monsters move
audibly in ...
