There aren't enough words...

Post by ILoveTiggy »

... to describe how incredible this game is/was/will be forever :-)

I used to have this on The Amiga years ago when I was little(and it came with that interesting book about Sara and the others opening a door as a cliffhanger), and never before- or will- a game keep me as enthralled as this one!

I used to scream ever time a new baddie turned up- or if I bumped into a group of mummies!... and don't get me started on that da-dum da-dum noise when something was round the corner! I remember my first 'MON' fireball, almost starving to death on the last level with just Tiggi and Boris left as there wasn't enough food for anyone else.

Loved that big dark room that spat fireballs out! Loved the skeletons and the pink worms and the funny elementals and that genuinely creepy feeling you get everytime you reach another set of stairs going downward! Loved half-having a heart attack the first time I met a stone golem! Loved the skeleton keys! Loved the writings on the walls and the little extra things like the Mirror of Dawn! Loved the array of spells and little magical potions! Loved the 'TIGGY HAS GAINED A WIZARD LEVEL' coloured text at the bottom of the screen :-)

Hated falling down the pits! Hated running out of water! Hated running out of food! Hated getting poisoned! Hated accidently trapping my team's heads underneath a closing door! Hated it when everyone died and there was that awful scream!

... but I loved hating it!

Sorry to sound like a gushing dork, but I'm so happy with the warm fluffy feelings the logo at the top of the page bought rushing back :-)

Awesome game, never replaced in my heart. Altogether now, "Awwww!"

Yaay :). Someone else who thinks...sorry, who KNOWS that DM is fantastic :D. There are loads of stuff I loved and hated about it...oh one more thing I think you missed - HATE having your wep nicked by a Thief who then runs off into the distance and you don't have any Fireballs ready to lob at him so he gets away and then you run into about fifty more mobs or fall down a pit trying to chase him. GARRRGH. And then you run into him again 10 mins later, well you think it's him but you kill him and it wasn't the one who nicked your wep...THEN you find the right Thief and kill the fooker and finally get your wep back, yaar!!
Well of course there's tons more stuff I could list but the people of this site aren't obsessed without knowing it all already...still it's sharing it that's fun eh :D.
Btw hello. Meet me. I waffle.

:D

I know just how you feel. As an old timer DM player it was such a joy to find this site. I dont know what was better, being able to play again or finding there were so many fellow addicts after all these years.

Also cool to find so many fans who were hardly born when DM came out originally. Shows that game play and atmosphere are the most important things. Been playing loads of unreal tournament with my nephew lately, and its great, but doubt if it will still be around in 16-17 years with a thriving web site and active forums.

I can see this game surviving another 20 years. Im sure some of you programming types can convert it when PCs are history and the next multi media creations come along !

Omg I'd seriously crap myself...if I heard the distant dragon's roar and then got smacked upside the head with a Fireball lol. I mean, I do anyway, but I would even more if it was VR ;).

i am not really ready for a solo trip, but i´ve started another game immediately after i finished DM.

guess who is in the team - Boris and Mophus, yesss!

is it only my impression, or is it a fact that the less members you have in your team, the more experience they get?

Well Kebes, you basically gain the same amount of experience, but it is spread over less characters. Thus, those characters do gain levels quicker. Two characters is probably ideal - you gain levels quickly, but still have enough room and resources to get by.

Yes I enjoyed a duo run-through of the dungon as I tried that for the first time a couple of weeks ago. But Mophus? Aieeee!! Let us all run away now!

I find Morphus a little bit too weak for solo play. His wisdom stat is suprisingly low for a spellcaster... I think he kills the monsters with his warm smile and friendly approach.

PaulH swears by two people, and I can see his point - you get the maximum attacks and carrying capacity as opposed to higher mana and concentrated experience. I still tend tobias towards solo play alot, even though I loose 50% of my melee attacks, lots of mana, etc - I like being able to dodge spells and RELLY concentrate that experience gain

And I think the journeymen suffer from biased spellcasting stats - wuuf and chiani far outstrip mophus and gothmog

I find that Chani is a very good pick for solo play cause of the moonstone she carries. It boosts her spell casting stats a bit, so basicly when reincarnated she's deadlier than anyone else resurrected.

It also boosts a sub-skill of magic users if I recall, just like the gem ogf ages boosts a priest sub-skill (better potion casting at least)

Yep it does! Thus making her more experienced at start! Even with reincarnation!

Yes, it is the best game ever...

Post by Sigi »

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and I was having in mind to post something like
the person who has started this thread. Well, as (s)he has put it in better
words than I ever could, I'll only second that.

For year I've been telling friends who don't know DM how great it is
and that it's the best game ever yadahyadah. I was not 100% sure about
that since I hadn't played it for years and it could have been nostalgia
after all.

Well, a few days ago I googled and was delighted to find such a rich and
active community around this game. And yes, it is the best game EVER.
I've just started playing the RTC remake and it feels great.

I'm also astonished that there are several top-notch rewrites around. Paul,
who has ported the ST version, is probably insane for doing that but hats
off to him, that's a great job after all. I don't like the ST version at all,
for it's bad sound effect and color palette constraints -- I've seen DM first
on the Amiga so going back to the ST version would just hurt too much :D .

So my heartfelt greetings go to all fellow players here. This game and this
great community will probably be around for a long long time to go!

well what can i say other than welcome to the forums, first off may i recommend you create a new account for the long term reasons, and then after that, just post in the many available forum sections, news and chat being one of the most common to visit.

last thing, beware of mophus ;)

I'll second Sera on that, welcome to our insane little corner on the web. ;) I also agree that DM still is (and probably always be) the best game of all time. The Atari ST version, by the way, isn't that bad. I too came from the Amiga version, but the only real difference is that the sounds monsters make while moving are missing. This is annoying, but I can live with it.

There are also some great custom dungeons here; some are on par with DM, some are probably even better. You should definitely check them out once you finished the "normal" games.

I've started a new party yesterday to see how it would work to have four
all-rounders in the party, ie. no specialists on anything. I only paid
attention to have good magical abilities in each of them and that
they are not too weak in terms of hit points. So, well, Mophus was
among them but I also think he definitely got a retarded smile :).
Reminds me a bit of these Arabian carpet salesmen you meet on
vacation in Tunisia...

Maybe I'm too picky about this, but for me, having the monsters move
audibly in the dungeon even if you don't see them has always
been one of the best (and scariest) elements of DM. It greatly contributes
to its atmosphere. Also, the quality of the sound effects themselves is
not good at all in the ST version.

We Amigans were opposed to the ST community for a reason, after
all :).

I've already tried the Amiga version on WinUAE, but it is a bit sluggish.
Maybe I'll decide to live with that, just to have an experience as close
to the one I had when first playing the game.

CSBWin and RTC both are really quick, and configurable with regards
to keys and so on, and I really like that. Both have their drawbacks as
well:

In CSBWin, I don't have "proper" sound :) and the fullscreen mode
doesn't work as I want it to.

RTC is not a perfect clone, so it feels a bit different to the original DM.
I get the feeling, though, that a lot of thought has gone into RTC and
it really feels very close to the original, so I might just live with that.
Sound seems to be from the Amiga version and the graphics are even
better because there is anti-aliasing and no palette contraints at all.
There are also some great custom dungeons here; some are on
par with DM, some are probably even better. You should definitely check
them out once you finished the "normal" games.
I will definitely do that when I'm done with DM and CSB. I've never had
a serious go at CSB so this will be kind of a new experience to me.
I'm also thinking about finishing DM2 at last. I remember having been
stuck when I played it a few years ago.

In DM2 there also was this issue of being able to generate lots of gems
by selling Axes to one of the vendors in the woods, so that has killed
the fun a bit for me (melee fights got quite easy because of that). (Edit:
the fights got easy because the Axes themselves were too strong
at the point in the game already. The gems got you every item you'd
want to have so finding strong items wasn't as interesting anymore.)

NOOOOO!!!! Mophus as an avatar!!!! *runs*

Oh, um, well... I have to say I envy you for not having played CSB yet. I wish I could relive the sensation of playing that game without knowing what happens... DM2 is something I never really liked, I solved it once in 3 days about 10 years ago and never played it again, and I don't really want to either. Somehow, it just doesn't feel the same...

Und es ist schön, hier noch jemanden aus Deutschland im Board zu sehen. ;) Schönen Gruß ins ferne Saarland.

LOL, I was waiting for the first reaction about that. I love the picture,
it's such a cheesy smile.

Well, I know some of it (I remeber the room full of invisible walls
and dragons, shudder), but it will be a fresh experience I'm sure. But
first I'll have to go through DM again, of course ;-).

That was exactly my impression as well. I didn't even bother to finish
it, but maybe I'll give it another shot sometime.

Danke danke, aber es sind noch ein paar Leute hier, sogar aus SB wie
ich gesehen habe.
