Re: Understanding weapon damage
For the armor, the lizard in question is probably strong enough to use the heavy stuff, but for all but the the strongest (in terms of raw strength) champions you want to use the medium or light armor. Halk, Stamn, Daroou, Hissssa, and Sonja are the ones you probably want to wear heavy armor. The ...

Re: Hidden Skills
Dungeon Master is one game that actually encourages making jack-of-all-trades type of characters. Lower levels advance more rapidly, and you get minor benefits to being a wizard or priest from advancing fighter or ninja levels. Mostly in the form or more mana to play with, and better stats for ...

I've posted elsewhere that poison is particularly effective on trollins and gigglers, and wasps are weak to poison clouds. You can kill any wasp with an ON level poison cloud. Most wasps on level 6 can be killed with LO level clouds.

I didn't even notice that they got more powerful, but the game is really bad about giving feedback on numbers. The only thing that actually gave you numbers were weapon attacks (including punches and kicks), everything else was more or less hidden from the player.

@Jay - Still, as you mentionned, the spell died out by itself. I too (almost sure of it), have encontered similiar bugs in my previous playthrough. The thing that (here too), it just lasted couple of seconds. So in the end i didn't much pay attention.
If it only lasts a couple seconds, then ...

Re: Suggested Improvements for this Awesome Game
Just a few I can think of, some of which are corrected errors or have since been implemented in DM2 or clones:
- give the solid key to a Giggler in the arena, meaning it can appear anywhere on the level rather than just being stuck in one place
- something a bit less confusing than the "Clockwise ...

It almost looks like the IIGS version of the Kid's dungeon was unfinished. Like they accidentally shipped an earlier file by mistake. That actually might make some sense.

Don't bother filling chests with worm rounds. Fill them with drumsticks, cheese, bread, or corn. You can get unlimited drumsticks on level 9 in a room near the fountain.
You'll want to bring them as food is at a shortage on all levels after level 9. So is water.

Do creatures move on levels other than the one the party is on? I'd think for memory purposes that the game might only concentrate on the current level.
So freezing the creature long enough to get to the stairs might be enough.

I only found out about that on accident something like 20 years after I first played the game. Personally I think you should do both.
Do a bit of training in the Screamer Room when you pass by it, then when you are done with level 5 (or 4 if you are starting from zero. I had the hint book and it has you start on level 1 with the screamer room on level 4 and the rat room on level 9) use the ...

They used to sell blanks stickers with pin-feed sized for floppy disks back at the end of the '80s. I imagine in the '90s they sold them without the pin-feed since printers had largely switched to sheet feeders.

I am not sure if punches count for special purpose weapons, but they can be useful against rockpiles and stone golems. To a lessor extent animated armors, but those attack so quickly that you're better off using hit and run or the step-dance.

I tend to prefer stronger champions because I'm a packrat and hoarder. Both in-game and in real life.
Also I've noticed that champions like Tiggy, Gando, and Wu Tse tend to be rather fragile even later in the dungeons, such that they can be 1-hit-ko by a mummy, trollin, rockpile, scorpion, or ...

The thing is, the "can only steal from your off-hand" does NOT apply to all versions of Dungeon Master. I tried that tactic in the Apple IIGS version as a kid over 30 years ago and they wound up stealing from my backpack.

It's too bad you can't create the guard minions from DMII, or set some kind of traps.

Apple has reused the name "Mac Mini" several times, if it's the old PPC Mac, you can probably run an old emulator to do so.

If it's a small room, it sounds like a good candidate to fill with poison clouds. That way the gigglers run into the poison and take damage while running away.
