The "smooth mouse looking around" would be more for exploring and interaction:
e.g. look in the ceiling and push a hidden-button on the ceiling.
As for shooting you are right, it would also change the game feeling if one has to aim on monster. It also changes the way spells are used.

I am also in the (early) process to make sort of DM clone using Ogre3D.
