I am Adam... prince of Eternia. Secret powers were revealed to me, the day I held aloft my magic sword and said.. "by the power of greyskull... I HAVE THE POWER!!"
since my name is Adam.. it worked for me..
anyway, new series has already started.. anyone else seen it?

I had no idea they had remade it! What do you mean just started though? Wikipedia says it was redone in 2002/3?

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
I didn't say it "just started" I said it's "already started" I found season 3 episodes on youtube when I went searching so it had to be at least 3 years it'd been running
Though I had no idea at all when they had started. I had heard about it, but I just started watching it now

What I meant was you made it sound like a new season had started recently, but clearly nothing new has been out for 6 years. I was confused

I'm guessing DM with the Simms. Sort of a wholesome dungeon keeper where screamers and oitus can finally form a proper family together

Hey, welcome Atic
. Have fun and stay away from anything that looks like Mophus. Oh, and don't go near Trantor - you might die from exposure to...erm...ick. But then he'll get banned again, so it's alright

Thx for the warm welcome.
There will be nothing "special" about my version, except i want to get it finished
I am using Ogre3D engine and will run the complete game code server-side (usning rakNet).
One thing i am thhinking about is the movement:
the "block-move" in orginal DM was a technical limitation (due to those times) but also turned out to be a game feature.
Todays 3D engine can easily handle "smooth" movements, but i ask myself if i should keep "block-movement" in my version (still smooth looking around with mouse) since this was an important DM gameelement. How do you guys think about this?

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
I would preserve the tile-(block)-movement, although the feature of "still smooth looking around with mouse" would change the DM feeling to some extent anyhow (would that mean that you could attack / shoot in all directions? and the enemies too?).

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
The "smooth mouse looking around" would be more for exploring and interaction:
e.g. look in the ceiling and push a hidden-button on the ceiling.
As for shooting you are right, it would also change the game feeling if one has to aim on monster. It also changes the way spells are used.
I liked the way DM used spells by combining symbols. By introducing aiming the spells need to be "prepared" (spell buttons / trays) which will be then more similar to todays rpg-games.
So adding new features are "easy", preserving the original gameplay "hard".

@AticAtc, you might want to create a new thread in the Clones Forum to chat about your clone. This is a general chat thread and subjects change here on a daily basis, so your clone discussion would soon get lost.
Re: So, tell us about yourself...
Hey Folks,
Just registered and thought I'd say Hi.
I'm 36 so seem to fit in with the age range of the forum, first played and completed Dungeon Master on the ST way back in the day and I've had an on/off addiction to it ever sinc, coming back to play every couple of years usually using a dosbox of the original PC version but I was fairly sure someone would have done an update by now so started looking. Came across the various clones and then the forum as a resource to differenciate them. Ended up choosing RTC, DMJava just didn't feel right even though it looked better. I'm liking the improved spell structure even though I was one of the really smug ones who created fireballs on day 1, level 1. Made the rest of the game a little easy though /shrug. The increased difficulty is cool as is the fact the various shield spells do what they are supposed to.
Still loving the game, for me it's the ultimate dungeon crawl even compared to the newer, better looking and more in depth games although I do find the lack of number crunching ingame a little frustrating at times but you guys have mostly resolved that for me

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
Hey Priamel...woo we seem to be getting lots of newcomers lately. Cool
. We increase our numbers ever further until eventually we shall hopefully achieve...erm...actually, world domination sounds a bit boring
. Oh well, maybe we can umm...do something else. Breed actual real-life Screamers and scare the crap out of people
. Yeeaaahh, a real-life Screamer Room! Then everyone would have food and the world would explode from overpopulation
.

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
No, it wouldn't, because this real screamer-room would be very likely situated somewhere in the EU or in the US or in Japan, and Africa and other countries would suffer from starvation anyway (see our food- and population-focused discussion somewhere else in the forums). But it's a gentle idea, Ameena!Ameena wrote:Then everyone would have food and the world would explode from overpopulation.
(well... provided that the screamer food actually is edible, which is another question, of course

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
How can anything chopped from a mobile, semi-sentient, dungeon floor sweeping, overly audible and overgrown mushroom not be classed as edible? Oh...wait...the answer just may be in the question.

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
I'm a bit late, but I'll try a short introduction, too. 40 years of age is not too far away anymore, and people over here tell, that we get wise when reaching 40. So the silly youngster times are almost over, but it's alright, being wise is something, too
Having started my computer career with an Atari 800, then switched to an Ataris ST, later an Amiga 500 and finally mid-90s to a PC, first running Linux, because is was convinced that Windows is evil, but later I made peace with Windows, since most of my hardware lacked the right drivers in Linux.
So I came across a lot of games on a lot of systems, and often there was the wish "I want to do that too", making games like that. So I got into programming quite early, learned BASIC, assembly for each of the processors, C, C++ and finally got stuck with Java, which is my favorite language currently, despite a few flaws.
Painting and graphics also have been an ongoing interest of mine, but I never got really good at it. Lately, say the past five years, I think I see an upturn finally, but I'd rather think that is experience than newly gained skill. Unlike that, I think my coding skills dropped a level or two, but still are good enough for many projects.
There was a time when so called "trackers" were famous on the Amiga to create music, and I dabbled with them too, but since that time I didn't pick it up again - Linux didn't like my sound card, and now the era of trackers seems to be mostly over, although here and there I think to see descendants of the old trackers still being in use.
I have a boatload of failed projects on my back meanwhile, and now try another fail at a dungeon master inspired project. It's fun at times but as usual also a bumpy ride now and then. I hope I can stay with it for a while, and create something that at least somewhat resembles a game.
Also I suffer from depressive phases, so if messages of mine appear just too negative there is chance that I'm just having a bad day. Often I try to avoid posting on bad days, to keep peace and not annoy people too much, but sometimes I get into stupid arguments this way. Late winter/early spring seem particularly difficult for me; I think the darkness and cold of the past months just depleted my savings of happiness ... I sure hope spring will come, but right now we got another load of snow just after a few sunny and warmer days.
Dungeon Master was one of the most impressive games that I played. When it was new, it was a perfect amalgam of graphical innovation, an intriguing story, a unheard of magic system and a well designed dungeon world. I don't remember any other games that provided such an experience later, but of course all the later games had to compete with the glorified memories of DM.
Well, I'm glad that I was pointed to this forum, and to have a place now to share ideas about Dungeon Master and related projects

Welcome back then!
I truly envy you for the experience of finally playing through the original games for the first time.
Which platform are you using to play (original MS-DOS-PC Dungeon Master, Atari or Amiga emulator, ports to Windows like CSBWin or RTC or DSB etc..)?
When you're through with DM1 you can have much fun playing Chaos Strikes Back (an original add-on for DM), Dungeon Master II (Legend of Skulkeep), and there are also many custom dungeons written by other regulars here.

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
Hello lunever, thanks for asking, i'm just setting up my A1200 now. I'm going to load up my old DM save and set about defeating that really tough cloaked dude and then try to figure out what to do with the firestaff and power gems and..... I'm pretty clueless really!
Revolutionary Greetings!
Re: So, tell us about yourself...
You mean you use a real physical A1200, not an emulation like WinUAE?
If you have questions about how to solve DM1, post them in the Dungeon Master subforum, we'll be glad to help.
