Re: Does anyone use lightning bolts?

According to ChristopheF's Dungeon Master Encyclopaedia, Stone Golems and Animated Armor enemies should both indeed be immune to Fireballs. Here is a link to the relevant page:

Re: Best ways/places to gain experience at various stages?

To the best of my recollection, I just let him live during my last playthrough. I killed him once since I had never done so before, but I reloaded and just ran past him on subsequent attempts. In the SNES version of the game, you are basically at a point of no return once you have reached the Dragon ...

Re: Does anyone use lightning bolts?

I honestly haven't ever used the Lightning Bolt spell except to experiment when I was newer to the game. It is very expensive to cast, and as far as I know it doesn't do enough damage against tougher enemies which resist fire to be an efficient way of killing them.

Re: Best ways/places to gain experience at various stages?

It depends on whether your primary goal is to gain experience or to safely kill the enemy. I generally just used Magic Torch for Wizard experience during my last playthrough, but I generally did try to use it with a weaker enemy attacking me when possible. Once I was done training, I generally just ...

Re: Understanding weapon damage

The main thing I recall from Automaton's analysis of this is that having both a Shield Spell and Shield Potion up is at least as important a factor in reducing damage as the actual armor a character is wearing.

Re: Best ways/places to gain experience at various stages?

As far as I can recall, you get *much* less experience if you are performing a combat action when you haven't recently been attacked by an enemy, so you are generally better off punching an enemy on an earlier floor than punching the air on a later floor.

Also, you don't actually have to punch the ...

Re: Best ways/places to gain experience at various stages?

Yes - Automaton posted some good information about training with the Black Flames a few years ago. It can apparently work quite well as long as you are diligent about keeping your Fireshield up. The problem is that by the time you are down there, you have already essentially completed the game ...

Fair enough. Those were good books, by the way - the sections of the Dragonlance Legends series where Caramon descends into a drunken depression and Tika begs her friends to bring him out of it are definitely funny.

Re: Best champions - an analytical approach

You basically just save before gaining a Healer or Wizard level and make sure you gain 1 Wisdom point for each Healer level and 2 Wisdom points for each Wizard level. If you do this and train 10 levels of each, each of your characters will end up with 30 more Wisdom points than he/she started out ...

Re: Best champions - an analytical approach

I didn't have Leyla in the group. Halk, Sonja, and Stamm all have higher starting Stamina than Hissa.

If you are willing to use buffs, I would err on the side of sacrificing Wisdom for better Strength, Stamina, and Dexterity - even the characters with the lowest starting Wisdom can maximize their ...

Re: Best champions - an analytical approach

Yeah - I have previously observed that Azizi has really solid stats, but I never actually used her during a playthrough before. Sonja is also really good (to the extent that I don't think I have ever attempted a playthrough without her in my group).

During my last playthrough, I used Hissa, Halk ...

Re: Best champions - an analytical approach

The problem is that the Champions with high Strength tend not to have high Wisdom. You can basically max out a character's Wisdom using Dane Potion buffs, though [especially if you optimize your stat gains when your characters gain levels]. A lot of characters have both high Strength and Stamina ...

Re: Best champions - an analytical approach

Differences in the characters' starting Mana and (especially) Health tend not to matter a very great deal at higher levels. All of the characters will gain a ton of Maximum Health and Mana as they gain levels, and these gains are not based upon the character's current Maximum Health or Mana ...

Re: Solo runs with various champions

I guess the "sticker shock" of seeing a character with 1 Maximum HP and 1 in almost all of his other stats just made me think "Wow, that's crazy!" Regardless, it still seems like a decent enough achievement to me.

Re: Hidden Skills

Hi Quartermass,

Based on my recollection of the game's mechanics, the experience that factors into fireballs is your basic Wizard skill plus the hidden Fire skill, like you indicated. However, having twice as much experience going into your fireballs won't have as huge an impact as you may be ...
