Re: Understanding weapon damage

The damage calculations in Dungeon Master are actually pretty complex. Automaton delved into them a bit in the following thread:

Re: Hidden Skills

I remember that I primarily used Magic Torch to train my characters' Wizard skill during my last playthrough even though it yielded slightly less experience than another alternative [Poison Cloud, I believe] because I preferred for my characters to learn the hidden Fire spell instead of the hidden ...

Re: Hidden Skills

Hi Quartermass,

Based on my recollection of the game's mechanics, the experience that factors into fireballs is your basic Wizard skill plus the hidden Fire skill, like you indicated. However, having twice as much experience going into your fireballs won't have as huge an impact as you may be ...

Re: how to survive without food or water in the worms level

I can see how playing Dungeon Master with a joystick would likely be difficult, but I can confirm that playing with a standard SNES controller works fine [in fact, it's the only way I've ever played the game].

Re: The many steps of custom portraits in Amiga Dungeon Master with WHDLoad

It's definitely cool that you developed your own character sprites for your playthroughs of this game. It's kind of funny that Wu Tse is supposed to be a female character but that she is also referred to in the game as "Son of Heaven."

I'm glad you were finally able to get the custom character portraits you made to load correctly. Did you make portraits for any of the characters besides the four you posted? If so, I would like to see what they look like if you don't mind posting them.

Welcome to the forum, 7bitretro! You'll find a lot of people here who have a background similar to your own. I'm a bit younger and didn't come across Dungeon Master until it had been ported to the SNES - I've always liked the game a lot, though, and I always felt it offered a unique style of ...

Re: Ultimate weapon & armour combo (including special weapons)

If I had to choose between Swing, Thrust, and Berzerk, I would definitely be using Thrust. Swing simply doesn't produce enough damage, and Berzerk has a longer recovery time than any other type of physical attack.

Right - a lot of my comments assume that you actually plan to remain standing toe-to-toe with an opponent rather than hitting it, ducking away, and then returning to hit it again once the recovery time for the first attack has elapsed....

Re: Ultimate weapon & armour combo (including special weapons)

Diamond Edge and Hardcleave both reduce an enemies' armor rating, they both have slightly higher base attack ratings than the Inquisitor, they both have access to the Chop command. Due to its heavy weight, Hardcleave will also have a higher Strength/Weight bonus if the character wielding it has very ...

Re: Ultimate weapon & armour combo (including special weapons)

For most ordinary purposes, Chop is the attack you want to use. It is reasonably fast, does decent damage, and does not have a negative defensive modifier associated with it like Stab, Thrust, and Berzerk do. If you want to inflict as much damage without regard to your characters' defense, Stab is ...

Re: Ultimate weapon & armour combo (including special weapons)

I'll take a quick stab at this:

Best Melee / Special Weapons: The Diamond Sword is definitely the best conventional melee weapon. Hardcleave isn't bad, either, and ordinary Axes are also surprisingly good. The Vorpal Blade you mentioned is the only supplemental special purpose weapon I normally ...

Re: Best champions - an analytical approach

Thank you for posting the link, Christophe. Like you mention in your notes, the maps which display in the game's ending sequence do not seem to be entirely accurate - however, it's still neat to see the maps of the floors rotating around once you complete the game.

Re: Best champions - an analytical approach

I didn't really get a chance to scrutinize the dungeon maps which are shown during the ending of the SNES version of the game - you don't get to see each map for very long, so if you wanted to look at them carefully, you would probably have to record the ending sequence so you can pause on each of ...
