[Not a bug] Problems with Numberpad

Post by goldenugly57 »

Hey, guys.

Finally found Dungeon Master for Windows and been happilly playing it since yesterday. BUT GOT A SERIOUS PROBLEM ON LEVEL 4: my numberpad does not allow to move sideways (forw. backw. turn l + r works fine!), which I need to do to pass through the iron gate with the small teleport knob. Any suggestions how I can continue the game?

Look into the "config.txt" file that comes with RTC. You can define the keys there which you use for movement. You should be able to use your keyboard for sidesteps then.

And welcome to the forums! :)

Indeed! Or you should find mouse clicks actually register faster with movement (who knew, RTC quirk) and so you should be able to click on the button then click on the sidesteps fast enough if needed

And welcome to the forums too!

Thanks for the welcome and your suggestions :D
Have already had a look into the config-file but could not figure out how to configure the keys  You know, I'm only a user, not an IT-Specialist :? I'll try again, though, and maybe one of you could post a step-by-step explanation of how to do it? Can't imagine to move the mouse that fast, by the way - tried it, but got frustrated rather quickly. I remember most of the Dungeon from my Atari-days in the 80ies and I'm pretty sure I used the keyboard then as well. Would drive me mad, if I got stuck there because of this issue!

I am definitely not an IT person, but changed the move keys to ones that were more convenient for me when playing on my laptop.
For instance I changed "move forward" to the w key (lower case)

All I did for a quick solution was find the code for w (000077, at the bottom of the config file) and copy it. Then I went to the "'k' = move forward" line, and I replaced the first set of digits on that line with 000077. I did not bother changing the upper case K.

I did the same for the back, left, right and turn buttons, saved it and restarted CSBWin. It worked fine.

Oops, just realised this is in RTC forums

I was talking about CSBWin, I have no idea about RTC.

I think that Golden Ugly plays DM under RTC because he writes into RTC Bugs forum. (EDIT: OK, Oh Brother, you were faster :) )

In RTC, changing keys for movement is an easy operation, if I remember. Open the config.txt for editing, find the KEY_STEP_LEFT and KEY_STEP_RIGHT (but not the first ones - those second ones in ca 1/3 of the file) and replace the NUMPAD1 and NUMPAD3 with the keys you want to use (like Q and W or so) and save the edits.

Are you using a laptop? Many laptops (like mine Toshiba) have a Function (FN or FN + F11, it depends) key that simulates the numeric keyboard for movement (J and L in my case for sidesteps).

But personally, I bought an external numeric keyboard for my laptop - a very useful thing!

And welcome to the forums, Golden Ugly! :D
Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!

Thanks a lot Jan - I could change the keys the way you told me! Did not know that rewriting the config-file also changes the program! So, I'll be off in the Dungeon again killing monsters

See you in Chaos 8)
