Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
Yeah, i definitely miss that one : there hasn't been news for years and *sorry to be harsch* but none of the new projects can compete with "Escape from Dragon Mountain"... I would have paid hundreds of euros for an editor with the actual engine !

@Linflas: well, a good contender is Entombed!
Btw you're right it's a real pity that this project has been evidentely abandoned...

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
Entombed is visually very good but i prefer EfDM, even if it has an older engine. The 90 degrees turns and step movement of Entombed just kills the 3D feel imho.

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
I see what you mean... but from a certain perspective 90° turns and step movement, if well implemented, will make you really feel playing something related with Dungeon Master.linflas wrote:Entombed is visually very good but i prefer EfDM, even if it has an older engine. I mean, what is differentiating Dragon Mountain from a Dungeon Master looking/nowdays Ultima Underworld? Ok, it's a top quality game, but IMHO DM needs to keep something in it's roots and this something might as well be 90° turns and step movements.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
This is why it's never going to be possible to make a truly modern Dungeon Master with a free roaming engine. The movement system is so inherently tied up with what made the game what it was.
Modern, immersive, vast, epic, realistic environments are great to look at, but they don't suit something that should have the name Dungeon Master.

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
I just finished the 3-Level demo of "Escape from Dragon Mountain". Truly awesome! Maybe a bit slow-paced compared to the original.
But the atmosphere, sound, lighting - it's all there!
However, I realise the latest entry dates back to dec 2009 - does the author have a homepage? Is this project alive?
And yes - I agree - better than Entombed.

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
The latest entry from the developers actually dates back to March 2005, and the last website address he posted no longer exists. You can probably assume that this project is very dead. There is an email address on the first page of this thread though, perhaps you could try directly? petrih@madonion.com.

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
providing he still works at Madonion.. I had a friend of mine who worked there for a while. They did the benchmark tools creating fake games to push the hardware to it's limits. just checked the website and it's changed a lot and looks as though they are at last building a real game instead of just the futuremark benchmarking tools

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
Hehe, I see this was 01
The bump of this topic made me aware of this and I just tried it out. Nice 3d graphics, this would be really cool if given the full options of DM. Count me in among those longing for an editor or full game for this clone.
The demo monsters seem rather hard though for not being able to save, my party just got eaten by bats.

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
I got munched up a few times before finally getting to the exit with all 4 characters... it was a fair battle, I'll say that! Those screamers are cool though, I like the anims and the gas cloud they make. The bats even swarm you sometimes (like real bats do).
I must agree with soap here, this engine would be friggin awesome if it had all the features of DM.

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
Terribly sorry to keep you guys waiting. All I can say at this point is that I'm really anxious to get back to this project. We have big plans and just the right talent to make this project a reality. However there is other super-secret higher priority work that we need to finish first. One thing though, we have no interest in creating a mere "clone." The original DM is a masterpiece and creating a pure clone doesn't do it enough justice in our opinion. This means that EFDM is going to evolve into a game that we think is no longer a clone but an original game (strongly) inspired by DM. I wish I could tell you more but my lips are tied, sorry

Re: Escape from Dragon Mountain
Just good to know you are still around and invested
A community that has stuck by a 25 year old game can wait, after all.

Announcement
Ok, time to reveal some secrets... We have started an indie game company and we're now working on this full time (4 devs). Bad news is we have started from scratch, good news is that we're totally jazzed up and moving at stellar pace. We have one complex playable level already. Tons of stuff to do but it's all progressing well - and it's great fun!
There's a development blog at http://www.grimrock.net/
Hope to see you all there!
Cheers,
Petri
p.s. please spread the word!
