Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
I never knew why games don't use/overwrite the 'Window' key and scroll up a tool bar from the bottom to show this sort of stuff.
Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
Must admit I usually have proper clocks in each room, and a watch or phone nearby with the time even closer

Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
Nah, you don't want real world stuff interfering with a game world. The whole point is escapism and losing yourself in it, right?
How many times have you played a game and finally realised "Is that the time?" -- that's less likely to happen if you actually have the time displayed in the game and I think it would take something out of the game's immersiveness. Plus interfaces should be as streamlined and intuitive as possible. Adding a realtime clock is just adding unnecessary clutter that makes the player think "What is this?" KISS.
If someone needs to know the time that badly then put a clock on your desk!

It's perhaps good for game producing companies not to display the "real-time" time in their games, so the people can't see how much time did they waste?
Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!

As an exercise of this in action, try finding a clock in a casino, video arcade, etc.

Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
I always play Civilization with the clock on. It's an option.

2 kind of yes', one "I don't need it", and 3 no's.. To be honest I only decide I need to look at the time when some asks me, or if someone (ie my wife) says do you know what time it is? .. rather expectantly

Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
I agree with Gambit 100%. If I play a game, I don't want real-life to interfer, I want to get lost in the game. I'm very much a "clock-person" anyway, I check the time very often. If someone asks me what the time is, I can usually pinpoint it down with an accuracy of 15 minutes max without looking at a clock/watch.

Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
Yeah, I'm similar to Trant - I tend to look at the time relatively often, and before I do I can usually mentally guess roughly what the time is. Unless I've been playing a game or doing something else quite involved, in which case I can be pretty clueless as to what time it is
. And likewise, I don't like Rl to interfere with whatever game I'm playing. Although some games can havea more amusing way of telling you the time, such as Dungeon Keeper 2 (and I think the first one as well, actually), where the voiceover/narrator person makes comments on the hour from about midnight till about 4am, basically saying it's very late and you should really be in bed right now
.

well, I was thinking that whole idea of the Wii.. it allows you to play, but after a certain amount of time, it reminds you that there is a world outside you can be playing in too

I'm working such varied hours, my body can't figure when to be tired.
Well, I'd say it's definitely tired at this moment. I'd better drag myself into dreamland.

Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
An Obituary printed in the London Times - not a joke and makes you think!
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.
No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
Why the early bird gets the worm;
Life isn't always fair;
and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place:
Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate;
Teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch;
A teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sunscreen or an Aspirin to a student; but could
not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot.
She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death
by his parents, Truth and Trust;
by his wife, Discretion;
by his daughter, Responsibility and
by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers:
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I am a Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him, pass this on.
If not,
join the majority and do nothing.
Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread

R.I.P., Common Sense. I won't forget you.
As you said, Gambit, it really makes you stop and think. This has much to do with our previous "Society better or worse than 20 years ago" discussion. I've always been very conservative (well - except my adolescence, lol), so I always kind of... believed in common sense... although I'm not sure if I master it.
Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!

But it's not easy to come in, you have to make a really fine testi, we don't accept anyone.
Then - it's pretty quiet in there now. All the people caught by real life and no fine game to reactivate them

Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
This is probably my last evening in my old flat/apartment. Since I don't have an internet connection in the new one and don't know when this will change, you probably won't see much of me for a few weeks. You will have to resort to somebody else for perverted cringe-worthy Mophus jokes or random rambling about games nobody care sabout anymore. See you soon.
Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Good luck with the move
See you on the flip side!
Good luck with the move

Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
Immediately crashed my computer to a bluescreen.
Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
See you as soon as possible, Trant! And have good days in your new flat!

Finally playing and immensely enjoying the awesome Thimbleweed Park-a-reno!
Re: INN OF LOST SOULS: general chit-chat thread
I remember when I left home. The whole situation was somehow very strange, and I think I really didn't like that. Very necessary furniture like a bed, a table and a wardrobe was already there, so not 'mine'. Then I went to bed and felt asleep.
And I remember the dream: being in that chamber, the kobolds were sitting on the table and asked each other: 'Now, what do we do with him?' ...
Good luck Trantor - may the little folk be good to you

Hush, hush, go back to sleep little Bit.
*Now, what do we do with him?*
A movie or a dungeon could start or end with these lines...
