Re: So, tell us about yourself...
OK, I've moved all DnD discussion to a new thread. I think I got everything, it was a bit complicated because you all had mixed up the discussion. Here's the new thread:
DnD Discussion: v3.5 vs v4 and other stuff...
In future, PLEASE DO NOT continue off-topic discussions like this, it's highly annoying and time consuming to resolve. Many of you said "We should split this thread" but carried on talking! That's not helpful -- if the discussion is going way off topic, then someone, anyone, should start a new thread to continue the new subject. Don't worry about the original off-topic posts being left behind in the older thread, at some point a moderator will make sure they are moved to your new thread.
Thanks everyone -- your continued observance of good forum etiquette will make sure that the whole forum is better for everyone to enjoy.

Well I was going to split it, but like you said it was time consuming - was going to do it tonight.
Thanks!

Hello everyone
Hello everyone, I'm surprised there is such a productive DM community. I originally was looking around for the DM game or something better (if thats possible) and I found this, which just might be more interesting than the actual game.
a little about myself, I'm a decent artist, I had aspiration to be a professional comic artist for many years and worked hard at it but have since given up idea.
I'm soon to be 31, I grew up watching my Dad play DM on his old ST and finally got around to beating the game a few years back. I miss the old games with pixelized graphics and the originality that came from the limitation of the hardware at the time.
There is alot to digest here and its inspiring to see what so many have done. I have done a few projects myself, a long time ago when my brother was in programing school he made a simple side scroller that i made graphics for in MS paint. I created a few short lived comics that I eventually abondoned because of my poor writing ability and general lack of time. I also worked on concept art for a 3d game my brother and his friends were programiing and modeling in their spare time. This project actually made it quite far, but the work load was a bit to ambitious for 2 people and was sadly never finished. So a bunch of unfinished work, but i find the process enjoyable never the less.
I'm also interested in learning more about pixel graphics... I created my avatar in paint with my mouse (looked at Zeds pic as a reference), and while its interesting im sure there is a better way. (my fantasy project would be a sci fi/cyberpunk pixel rpg/diplomacy/exploration game) ha! what a mouthful.
besides that I live in houston (wished i lived in the country), I enjoy strategy games and in general and well crafted games of any sort. like board games, outdoors, books, comics and all that sort of stuff. I like peace and quiet and spare time and thats my introduction. I look forward to lurking around the site
EDIT~crap, im meant to put this in the introduce yourself thread.

And mod power flexed!
Welcome officially to the forums! Glad you found us.
Interesting your avatar was done by hand, I thought it was just an alteration as some other people do. Definitely there's something amazing about simple art where a few pixels get to suggest something. Ah, a simpler time
Do you have the link to any web comics you attempted?
Anyway, hope you enjoy browsing aroudn and seeing what everyone's done!

Well, Welcome to the site
. I expect I'll check out that webcomic of yours later, since I don't have time right now as I've got to go to work in a bit and I have a bunch of other sites/forums I need to check before then
.
But anyway, have fun browsing round the forum and playing/replaying all the dungeons

Hiya i just joined after running into this DM editor thingy RTC.exe and WOW I am already hooked, got to replay DM and it was like being young again, but then I started updating the graphics on portraits, which lead me into a fun MAKE MY OWN DM excitement.
Fun is nice, I love fun.
I am 26yrs, but my mind is mentally that of a 6yr most the time, innocent, cute, annoying, and MEOW... Adult me is in there somewhere and comes out when needed la la la blah blah the end.
Anyhow nice to meet the world of DM, I didnt think place like this exsisted, so I am excited ^.^ meow
I am gamer girl all the way, been playing since back when Mega Man for the Nes was still BRAND NEW and Final Fantasy series just began their saga, cause before those 2 games it was mario and paper boy lol.
Just cause I love DM, I took the main RTC edit and added the original music from the SNES version into it... Not exactly where it should be, but damn close cause I recall some parts in the game where I KNOW it was playing, key spots in the maps = music starts...
Oooo whats that? ....
....
*Gets lost looking at potential portrait/graphic edits for her custom DM game with no name yet*

Welcome.
If you want an exact copy of SNES (well, actually, Super Famicom, the game is in Japanese) DM, you could also try:

Hehe, welcome
. Your mental state sounds much like mine, and I'm only a bit younger than you (I turn 26 in a couple of months). I'm sure people will be happy to playtest your dungeons for you, should you decide you want to make some for the rest of us to play
. Meanwhile, there are plenty out there which other people have put together, through which you can browse and scamper and then get killed in
.

Hi, the names Dave, im fom the UK and im maybe an oldie here being over 50, although I dont feel it. I played the original Atari ST game when it first came out in my 20s and still consider DM and CSB to be the best games ever. I just start playing the game again and even after all those years I can still remember some of the dungeons or challenges while playing. I always play Halk, Daroou, Zed and Elija in every game I played. I am playing the Return To Chaos version but the original DM game option on my netbook, fantastic.

Woo, welcome to the forums
. I was gonna say hello in that other thread you posted too (the one about non-mana characters gaining mana from stuff), but I forgot. And I don't think you're the oldest person on the forum...I think there is someone older, though I'm not sure. If my dad was a member (and he also used to play DM and all that), he'd be older than you, anyway
.
So, any good/funny/interesting memories of DM from "back in the day"?

Thanks for the welcome, good to see the forum is being visited and the games still being enjoyed by you young people, lol.Ameena wrote:So, any good/funny/interesting memories of DM from "back in the day"?
The only memories really are the ones most people have of games that have affected them as DM did. For instance the first time I seen the Atari ST demo I was amazed at the dungeon, roaming through seemed so quick and smooth, after using a C64. The game itself, well its so atmospheric and playing this glued to the screen late at night was, well, terrifying, especialy going round a corner and bumping into a screamer or similar, lots of heart stopping and furious clicking going on.
In real life, thinking of the game 24/7 was the norm and my cousin and myself enthused about it for hours. Any old walls in the street I went past that looked similar to DMs was looked at while passing, just in case I missed a switch or item (really), yes it affected me that much. Getting to the end of course was fantastic but wanted more and I did restart with two characters but I dont think I finished the game this way, so was happy to see CSB released, which I played on the Amiga.

Glad you found the place, Sir Handsome.
I was in my early 30's when I was introduced to DM (ST) by an, er, older man.

He would always buy ST games, then bring them over to me when he gave up on them.
(Hey, I'll take the game to MW. HE will figure it out. )
Glad he brought DM over. In spite of the many years since it came out, DM remains a most interesting game.
Just bought Might and Magic: Dark Messiah for the 360. Hate the controls. Hope to adjust my attitudes to enjoy it.
P.S. Hello Kes. Glad you found the forum, as well. ADHD - A chosen lifestyle for the rich and famous.

I'm 27, from Kent, UK and was directed to this site, ironically while searching for Eye of the Beholder information! My dad owned an Atari ST shortly after they were released and therefore I have really fond memories of watching him play, as well as playing myself. I spent more time in the Hall of Champions than anywhere else, and more time designing new portraits in CSB than I did willfully playing the game, so replaying it all now is quite an eye opener. My finest hour was accidentally saving over my Dads savegame, when he was close to the end and causing him to start the game over. He wasn't pleased!
I've spent the last week reading these forums, and I'm just now seeing the depth of DM and I'm enjoying it more than I did at the time (which amounted clicking around, casting spells, purposefully dying by slamming into walls and falling into pits so I could resurrect the heroes at the altars and getting scared by the blue monsters with clubs!)
I work in IT, which means I get to spend alot of time on the internet (to make sure it's working for our users, naturally!). I enjoy gaming in general, gadgets and technology, food, nostalgia, football and Formula 1
EDITED TO SAY: I love that there is still a thriving DM community and projects such as CSBwin and RTC bringing DM to life after all this time. Thanks to all involved

Lol nah, Luton here
. I just always find it really freaky how out of all the possible places in the world, I find someone who lives within just a couple of miles of me - there's someone on another of my forums who's also in Rochester. What's weird is for all I know I've actually seen you somewhere in real life, say we might have walked past each other in the high street or something, and not known it :O.
At least I know you're not, say, someone from my gaming club, because as far as I know no-one from there lives in Walderslade, so we haven't met loads of times without realising it

Hello,
I'm 18 years old and live in Sweden and doin' the last year on the gymnasium (upper secondary?). I discovered DM after I had played a lot of Oblivion and Morrowind. I wanted to play the old Elderscrolls games (Arena and daggerfall). Then I discovered DOSBox and what I could do wit DOSBox. When I searched for the old elderscrolls games, I discovered there were many other games like those and I could download a lot of them on some sites. At the time I had just discovered roleplaying so those kind of Dungeon-games really interested me because it was like Dungeons and Dragons, also I really like very very old stuff because it's few who plays it. I like everything that has few people doing it. I tried out DM and found it very hard at the beginning, so I did not play it to often, just tried. Then when I started with Minecraft, it reminded me of DM and I decided to play it trough and then I found it so cool, exciting and funny so I played it a lot and joined this forum after a search on google to see if the game had some community. I were surprised to see that this community was so active.
Actually I finished DM now, this night with Hissssa, Gothmog, Halk and Wuuf after a intense fight with the dragon and Lord Chaos. Now I look forward to play Chaos Strikes back and all those games.

But if you join this community, then you will decrease its attraction to you by increasing the number of its members!Fermen wrote:I like everything that has few people doing it.
Welcome Fermen and congratulations for defeating DM. Now CSB is another challenge! Be sure to check the custom dungeons, there are for all sort of tastes.

I think I've already "helloed" you, but this is an official one - so, hello again!
You seem to be one of the youngest members on the forums - it won't stop surprising me that DM attracts also the younger generation. And Sweden seems to be a hub for DM enthusiasts!
Congratulations on finishing DM!

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
Hehe, don't worry if you find CSB a bit...challenging. I think I can safely say of CSB that, even were you to have played it before, You Will Die. A Lot
. But don't worry about it - it's half the fun running around manically trying to avoid fireballs and worms and stuff whilst looking for a key to open a door that leads through to the corridor you've already run through about eight billion times earlier when looking for the key from the other side but without realising it and meanwhile accidentally falling down an invisible pit and walking through some fake walls and running away from a dragon who chases you to some stairs which lead to more pits and some more fake walls and then you end up back at the place you were at about five hours before when you were only hopelessly lost for about the fifteenth time and still can't find that bloody key...meanwhile something-you-can't-see-'cause-it's-five-miles-away-down-the-corridor lobs a fireball at you and you all die. The end
.
But yeah, have fun playing CSB, and keep us up to date on all the bits you've died at. There's loads of posts on here discussing wtf you're supposed to do and all that, so if you get stuck and want a bit of a hint, you'll be certain to find what you need

Re: So, tell us about yourself...
Hi there,
I'm 31 from Scotland. DM, CSB and DM2 were among my favourite games when I was younger. Dungeon Master (and 'Oids') were the first games I ever played after upgrading from a Commodore 64 to an Atari ST. The idea of a first-person perspective was still pretty new to me, and it blew me away. I was, and still am, in love with the 'walk around in blocks' style of game. I played DM2, Bloodwych, EOB, Xenomorph, Captive, Knightmare, Bloodfest, Legions of Dawn, Ishar, Perihelion, Ambermoon, Hired Guns .. anything with that gameplay style, I loved.
I found this place completely by accident last night, after following a link on http://www.moddb.com. I was searching for a mod for Stalker: Call of Pripyat, and was intrugued to see 'Dungeon Master' in the modded games list. I'm really excited to try some of the custom dungeons for RTC.
It's amazing to me that people are still making Dungeon Master games today, and I didn't know about it. I tried to write a sci-fi 'dungeon master' game of my own while teaching myself Amos and Blitz Basic, but never quite got there. That was 15 years ago, and I've focussed on graphics rather than programming in my career, but I've never quite lost that dream of making my own DM-style game. I think I will finally get around to it using RTC.
Pleased to meet you!

Hey, welcome to the forum
. There's plenty of stuff going on - there's several different DM clones up that you can have a bash at, or as Wuffy mentioned, loads of custom dungeons too, with more on the way as various people continue to make their own
.
