Yeah, positioning is a bitch right now. I moved you a little further back, although you did say you were investigating theother end of the mound so you are still close. The good news - to give you some metagame hope - is that I'm treating this critter as more dragon than plant so you can make sneak attacks against it. It has vulnerable points and so force to take advantage of. Though funny how well a shambling mound template would work here. I've tweaked the critter a little in light of this, rather than using my own house rules that I tweaked the dragon with. So thank Haynuss for the save, or 'thank' him if abilities have been kicked up a notch from my wimpy ones. Anyway, usully it would be more fun for me to let you find this out all this for yourself with rolls, actions, etc, but I think you are in so much harm's way you need some good news! Also, I would have let your Sense Motive gather what it is away to do next, but sadly it wasn't good enough. Luckily, the rogue has an ability that might save you. Unluckily, if you don't roll well, Ameena is going to be in a terrible way.

@Raixel: I'm going to widen the map. So although I'm positioning you on the upper edge, you can go ...actually, you could just run off the map if you really liked. Dragon is flat footed, so no AOO.

@Ian: I've provisionally moved Haynuus and Deephold to the water's edge, though in between the two for...reasons. Let me know if Haynuus would rush to Ameena's aid (Once you know if Ameena needs aid) or what, and I will resolve both your actions.

As the group started moving north along the rivers with various degrees of success, the dragon's head moves with Ameena's motion. Petal and Ameena had moved instantly with the instincts of forest creatures, Petal already ahead of her companions. The dragon's head did not move at Petals flight, instead focused on Ameena. Whether with curiosity, hunger or anger it was impossible to tell - spinning rocks for eyes were notoriously hard to read at the best of times, let alone in the faces of mythical dragon-plant creatures.

Ameena's words, at first, seemed to have merit. The head simply stared at the murafu as the murafu fell back to the edge of the river. There was a low growl, that came from various places along the whole body, but were definately concentrated in the head. There was a strange echo, like the growl was audibly reverberating aroudn the creature's skull.

Suddenly, its head lifted up and its body expanded so vines separated and the ribs of the creature were briefly explosed for all to see. With the sound of a gale, the head flicked back down again. The air around was sucked in to the mound, pulling at the group. LEaves and rocks tumbled. Ameena was not pulled inwards, for instead she faced the exit of the air - a jet of green fast moving gas was blasted from the foul maw of the plant dragon directly at where she crouched.

Yep, green dragon breath. Despite the mound's size, the creature itself is reduced. AS I said, it's amazing how my original idea maps well to the shambling mound. Anyway, the important part is - roll me a relfexes save Ameena! Roll a 16 or above, and you take no damage due to Evasion I believe. Blow the roll and Ameena takes 16 hp damage form the breath. Enough to know her in to dying, I believe. Did you say you have a Vi potion on hand?

Come on, we need Ameena rolling perception checks not Ameena rolling constitution checks here!

Petal feels the intake of breath as the air whips around her and her wings strain to keep her moving forward. She looks over her shoulder and sees with horror that the dragon's open maw is pointed right at Ameena, who has only moved a few feet since the thing awoke...

"No! Ameena! RUN!" she shouts, hoping that as the toxic breath rolls out that the agile murafu has somehow managed to avoid the blast.

OOC - Ah ha. The advantages of having a low initiative. Will wait for everyone else to act first!.... With his mouth open.

EDIT: Ahhh, it IS Haynuus' go as the Dragon just sneezed didn't it!

OOC - Fortunately my Reflex bonus is 8 so I only need to get a minimum of 8 on the roll in order to escape icky green gaseousness (it says for Evasion that if passing a reflex roll would normally let me take only half damage, I instead take none). But let's see...woo, 18 (10+8) :D. And since I know that's a successful roll, I might as well post the rest of the actions here too - slot 'em in wherever they fit in the Initiative (which, btw, has been somewhat chopped off with the enlargement of the map - the vine-dragon's roll is completely hidden now, though I suppose it doesn't matter too much since we can still see the order in which everyone acts).

BIC - As the creature performs some kind of strange inhalation, Ameena realises at the last moment that something unpleasant is about to come her way. Though she has seen some species of much smaller creature (and plant) exhale poionous fumes to bring things down or fend them off, she's never encountered such a thing in a creature this big. Fortunately, however, she is able to use a combination of somehow both flattening herself to the ground and yet at the same time somehow dancing about in order to avoid the blast of unpleasant-looking green gas which erupts from the creature's gaping maw.
Having avoided what might well have killed her, Ameena dances away a little further, all four feet skittering about on the ground to put as much distance as she can between her and the strange vine-gas-creature, yet without entirely leaving her friends behind, since she knows it may well turn on them next. She can only hope that it needs to take time to build up another store of gas before it tries to use such an ability again.

OOC - Ameena moves to hmm...let me see...it's a bit awkward to describe without the usual grid references on here, but put Ameena in the square that's fourth in from the left, second down from the top (just below the one that's missing its top-right corner due to the river). That should be reasonably out of the way, but I've also counted squares and that's within eight of the creature's arse if Ameena decides to leg it around for a backstab ;). Incidentally, had that gas attack hit, it would have left Ameena on 1hp, lol. She does still have an Um-level healing potion, and may well use it at some point. I can't remember exactly what actions we get in combat (it's not Standard, Move, and Minor like in 4th is it? Or they have different names...?), but I'm sure I can sort it out eventually :). Oh and btw I'm not entirely sure whether to thank Ian for the whole "Shambling Mound" thing, depending on how nasty Wuffy was gonna make this critter to begin with - I recall reading about Shambling Mounds once and thinking that they're nasty fuckers. I think that may have been the 4th edititon version but I seem to recall they have an ability to pull a target inside them with their vines and deal (lots of) ongoing damage to that person (as well as immobilising them) until they manage to escape (or die, or whatever ;)). I wonder what level this mob is...oh well, either way, I was pretty sure from when it first woke up that we are now in a Boss Fight ;).

Indeed Ian, you get to go next, but it was probably best to know what state Ameena was in first. And whew, it's a good state. A bubbling dying murafu isn't the most fun thing in the world! Far better to have a bitten in half one

I won't spoil the surprise about what abilities it does and does not have. Let's just once again say that I was pleasantly surprised about how close the mound came to for my converted dragon, that I am pleased to be able to put some 'official' mechanics to its house ruled abilities, and say no more about it, shall we!

And yeah, end of 'level' (almost free of the magic area), all your abilities perhapsd coming back to play, large creature kinda in the way... you could guess this is a boss monster. Then again, that would imply you have to beat it to carry on. Maybe you just need to survive it :D Or maybe you can talk it in to being your pet dragon, and go visit Soorec on its back.

OOC - Nooo got to go for a meeting. No time to post. The only thing I can think of is that this thing will have a grapple/grab type attack with vines. Will post later!

The half-orc used to get annoyed with his orcish companions as they would always hurl themselves into danger if there was just a whiff of something shiny and metal. With this crew however their basic survival instincts seemed deactivated as they were always investigating in places that were not appropriate... The anus of some kind of dragon-hillock for example - the pixie girl was definitely not going to have a long life span if she continued in her inquisitive nature.

Haynuus didn't want to get close to the not yet moving and so therefore can't be shambling mound of monster and the option of fleeing was one that he at least was very familiar with so... He reached into his backpack and pulled out one of the insidious gnome's potions. It was an earthy coloured one.

With a 'woot' and silent prayer to whichever god would listen he threw the flask at the mound (1d20+7=27). While watching it's arc in the air he realised that maybe he should have asked Deephold or Petal as to the true nature of these things but there was no time now and besides... It was a really pretty throw that even if it was a fist full of roses would surely cause some kind of discomfort to the abdominal creature.

You see, just as I get sad that Haynuus seems too well geared for just hacking away, and that Ian can't really find cool thigns to do some of the time because they don't tend to compare, and he goes and does this. Woot! Boss fight just got a little bit easier. A little. Also Ian, don't be afraid to try and push around the dragon. Sure, you can't move it around, but I might let you push some limbs and even a head. Just saying :)

Haynuus shifted, getting towards the river. Deephold seems shell-shocked and uncertain, only the sight of Ameena's plight bringing him out of himself. "Larethian's grace!" he said in quick prayer, apparerntyl sub-consciously.

However, Haynuus managed to move his throughts from trying to work out the differences in group dynamics to his past, and back to a more welcome area. Action!

The earth flask that had made Garax unsteady flew straight and true in to the largest mass of vines on the creature's side. It seemed to have its flight slowed by the mass, but Haynuus's strength was such that there was still more than enough force for the flask to shatter against a buried rib. The potion that seemed to weaken people had a far more grisly effect on the enchanted vines of the creature. Was that due to the magic of it, or did if have this effect on all plant life?

The greenery of the creatures side withered and darkened, becoming like charred wood. The dragon, who had swung his head to look at the tender morsels of Petal and Deephold as they moved, suddeny reared its head back and screamed in apparent fury and agony. There was a huge blackened hole now, revealing three thick and large ribs. It also revealed to those with better eyes the floating rocks pulsating within.

"Strike it before it can breath again! Get close" said Deephold, against Petal's judgement. Apparently the weakness revealed and Ameena's near miss snapped Deephold in to action,. he raised his mace and strode over to smash in to the ribs, and gain access to the creature's vulnerable interior.

The creature was still pained and was not quick enough to snap at Deephold before the dwarf was at its flank. However, it did try to move the limb closest to Deephold. There was a strange tearing sound that did not appear to hurt the dragon. The vines that its leg was composed of stretched, and partiaslly pulled out of the ground. The creature was mostly still trapped, althogh a few of the vines had snapped and now wriggled as if filled with life.

Ok, so that's the initiative order almost shifted. I need Petal and Ameena's next actions for round two. I will then update for the dragon. After that, all you guys can act between each update again :)

Oh, Ameena, remember in 3.5 basically move/minor -> move action, and standard still - standard. Basically, I'm nudging some actions that would be a move action to being effectively an extra minor action, simply because it works better anc moves the game faster. A good thing in PbP!

Map (I've trimmed it a little, and shifted stuff around. And added the grid references! Depending on tactics here, of course, I might need to draw a new map. Retreating backwards, and running away forward are both options. Ok, slightly less of an option now Deephold charged up, he wasn't going to do that before! Still, you can drag him away physically or use some well chosen words.

Or, you know, you guys can just lay waste to the Dragon and do a little dance afterwards.

Raixel, remember Petal had the confidence to cast at least 3rd level spells before. Well, without them going wrong, there was still the assimilation risk. Given the reduction in the chaos magic of the area, Petal should not worry about her spells going wrong even if castign a 4th level spell. Though the level of weird assimilation can't be judged for now, so there might be that worry in her brain.

Wait, wasn't there a map supposed to get posted? Oops...

Yeah, and last time you said it was safe I ended up covered in sparkles. But I dont really see any other option besides it.

Now that Ameena was obviously unharmed (for now) and the initial rush over, Petal starts to feel a sense of shame. She did this, caused the dragon to rise. She could have killed Ameena, still could hurt her friends. It was her fault everyone was fighting for their lives. She had no right to be with these people, as she would probably just lead them into more danger. Maybe Chaos really did curse her...

She had to set it right. She had to stop the dragon. Suddenly an idea comes to her. It was a long shot, but maybe...

The distraught pixie focuses on her inborn mana again. Over the millenia, pixies have learned to tap into the energy flow of plants, to speak with them and coax them into growing a certain way. It was how they formed their treehouses, which looked like nothing more than huge boles in the trunks of ancient trees. Petal moves forward over by Deephold and touches the plant monster. She focuses her inborn mana thru her hands and into the plant matter of the dragon, willing its "mind" to listen.

"We are not your enemy, let us go and return to your rest" she thinks strongly at it, hoping the corruption of the area hasnt diven its plant mind insane.

So Petal uses 'speak with plants'. No idea how you want to adjucate this one, so let me know if I need any rolls or anything.

Looking back to see what her friends are doing, Ameena is shocked to see Deephold charge forward and start hacking at the creature. Without thinking, she runs toward him, getting behind him and pulling at his belt (OOC - That is, if he's wearing one - if not then she'll pull at one of his legs instead or something).
"What are you doing?" she asks him frantically. "Stop it! Don't hurt it! Look, it's stuck to the ground...it's part of the ground! If we run, it won't be able to follow us and it probably would have stayed asleep if we'd just gone straight past it really quickly anyway."

OOC - Ameena is now just to the right of Deephold (note that the route she took to get to him would have been one that avoided any potential AoO squares - she put at least some thought into her movements ;)). Cool though it might end up being to bring down a critter like this, if I'm gonna be IC about it Ameena would never stand for it, especially since it's the party's fault that it woke up and, as with the swan-lizards, they've interrupted its day when it was just going about its own business and probably wouldn't have done anything aggressive otherwise. Ooh, umm, maybe I should roll Diplomacy to try and get the silly dorf to move his arse? Well, here's a roll anyway...13 (4+9). Meh. Oh well, maybe it will make him pause for a moment so Haynuus can pick him up and chuck him out of the fight, lol. That is, unless Haynuus is gonna start hacking bits off the vine-dragon as well...

Good idea on the roll Ameena, but in this case the arguments was good RP wise. But also dwarfs are stubbord. So we can split the difference :)

@Raixel: But the sparkles were pretty! And non-toxic (pending an EPA investigation)

Petal slipped in the creature's guard while it was distracted, and placed her hands on it to focus her will and magic on communicating to the creature. Almost immediately she could feel the pain in her head. This creature was not a plant, it was not a true green dragon as she had heard about in tales, denizen of the forests and swamps. It was a creature of the mountain wrapped and assimilated by the land, and it reacted in rage and pain at the maddening words in its skin that it should not be able to understand. And the plants it was wrapped in were no longer plants the way Petal knew of them, instead they were a part of this twisted creature, acting to its will without thought.

Sadly, Chaos had managed to drive insane not one but two sentinent species here, and neither responded well to her entrities. The dragon's head turned to her, apparently painfully twisting itself, and there was another indrawn breath that pulled on everyone. Petal saw the maw open before a jet of green gas blasted out at her.

To those external to the blast, Ameena's own hopes seemed answered. The breath was not something that it could constantly create, already this second blast was less spread out and much weaker in look. However, to Petal caught directly in the blast, this was not something she noticed as she felt her skin tingle painfully, and her lungs fill up with air that was like fire.

Raixel, I need a reflexes check from you, DC16 still, you drew the high end of the damage so failing will lose you 9hp, success will lose you only 5hp. Due to disorienting the creature with the speak with plants, and 'reading' its intentions a little, gain a +2 reflexes bonus for this roll only. While the speak with plants failed this time, it does - kinda - work. You can try to keep it up with contact or from afar. It will count like an intimidate check. You can either try to passify it, where successive wins will move it along the shaken track temporarily, or you can just use it to draw agro as happened this time.

As Ameena rushed across to pull the dwarf out of the way, at least Petal's actions allowed her to work. Deephold turned at Ameena's words, seeing the logic. However, the danger the pixie was in did not convnce him to run. "You are right, we can flee this monstrocity. Take the noble pixie and run! We shall be behind right behind you when you are safe!" Deephold quickly glanced to Hanyuus to make sure the half-orc was moving to protect the other two, and then yelled for the dragon's attention while starting to move sideways.

Ameena, this close to the creature, also finally saw the internals her companions had seen. It was disconcerting to see that the creature was so hollow inside, yet with those strange floating rocks.

Deephold is actually delaying until Petal and Ameena have moved, technically refocusing for a better initiative next round. Though in reality he's losing his pole position :)

Anyway, everyone gets another turn! Good luck!

OOC - Can I delay till Haynuus/Petal have started to get away? Ameena doesn't really want to just leg it and leave them behind sp she'll make sure Haynuus has grabbed Petal or something to try and get here away before she starts to run herself. Plus, even if she's at the back when they do all leg it, she probably has the greatest chance of dodging any Bad Shit the vine-dragon might try to lob at them as they make a getaway :).

OOC - I reckon that if Petal's flight isn't messed up by the dragon breath, then she should be able to fly away well enough, in which case I imagine Deephold will be the one with the most problems, as he's a bulky slow dorf with bare feet - maybe Haynuus could work on lugging him out of the way, or chucking him or something ;). Meanwhile Ameena can just leg it and if the dragon tries another breath attack she should be able to dodge it, and if she can't then hopefully it'll have lost enough power by then that she won't drop to 0hp in one hit ;). Can she judge whether it'd be safe to jump in the river from here (ie at a cursory glance, is it flowing too fast for her at this point?), or would I need to use an action to make a Perception check for that? 'Cause atm that's her emergency escape route ;).

Damn. I was apprehensive about my desicion. Now I know why. Fortunately,Reflex is one of my strong saves.

REF (1d20+6=20)+2=22 YES!

Petal feels the rage of the dragon-thing as it turns its head to face her. Again, the intake of air causes huge gusts to knock the small pixie around. Realizing what is going to happen, she flies with the gusts instead of fighting them, twirling in the air like a windswept leaf. She drops to the ground like a stone as the exhalation starts and manages to avoid the majority of the blast, but still feels a toxic chemical burn across her back where she couldnt quite get away fast enough. How much she is damaged remains to be seen, however, as she can already feel the spreading numbness where her flesh is damaged.

Grabbing the link again, this time instead of trying to talk to the craeture, she forces a spike of her will down it. Drawing on what little she knows of dragons, she tries to force the dragon back, to flood its enraged mind with conflicteing sensations and emotions. Hopefully, she can at least stun it long enough for her friends to get away. After all, she brought this upon them all, she has to make it right.

"Go! Hold him, know not if can I!! Go!! Run!" she shouts, as she locks herself in a battle of the mind with the beast.

Trying to intimidate it long enough so everyone can run. Once everyones in the clear, Petal will fly 60 feet back, crossing the water if need be

Seeing a consensus forming within the party he shouts "We must flee!" He saw that the pixie was suffering from the effects of the breath attack by the dragon, he moved to pick her up and out - if she'd let her. "Look, we can do NO good here now."

OOC - In case Petal doesn't mind him grabbing her by the arm, it'll be a aid defence in attempt to at least move her back 5'
With Petal complying, Haynuus moves directly one step north away with her, assisting in her defence if necessary.

OOC - In case that Petal really doesn't want to move at all.
Not wanting to hurt the dragon further but seeing that Petal has no desire to move just yet Haynuus looks for potential dangers from attacks with the vines or a grappling type of assault to aid his friends (if someone is in the process of being grabbed in the front row, maybe Haynuus could help? Have a d20! (1d20=18))

Awww, it's so sweet you guys thing a 10 foot wide creature has a 5-foot reach. Never underestimate how much stock I put in you guys doing things during combat. Even if you aren't causing damage, pulling agro can be the narrative justification for me not generating AoO automatically. Remember that you don't have to run away from combat to generate an AoO either. Just moving out of a threatened square - even if you move to a different threatened square - as part of a normal move will do it.

Anyway, Ameena can swim, it sounds like Haynuus can grab Petal and move her as part of a defensive thing, and I'll try to let all the swirling thoughts condense in to a resolution of the round soon!

Ameena held back, intent on seeing her friends safe. Deephold was about to look to the pixie's safety himself, while calling for Ameena to run and use Petal's gift to take herself from danger. However Haynuus - reacting to the dwarf's comments, or his own fears - rushed to pull Petal away despite the pixie's valiant entreaty.

Petal was forcing her thoughts to once again join with the plant part that was the creature. Once again it roared in anger, as if Petal was a burning migrane inflicted behind its eyes. It rolled its head, but seemed to understand that Petal was too swift for its cumbersome head to properly bring to bear on her.

Unfortunately, the plant life of its leg - while also aggressively reacting to her words - was also able to use the connection it knew to move towards her. Haynuus was already pulling Petal away from any potential danger, not realising he was stepping in to actual danger. The half-orc was strong and ready for anything, but Petal had been too close to the creature. Before Haynuus could fight them off, the twisted vines that made up a leg were already wrapped around his own legs and arms, and errant stragglers were crushing him and dealing glancing blows off of his head.

Haynuus was ensnared, being pulled towards the green monstrocity. The creature, despite having its 'leg' already wrapped around Haynuus, started to tug with its other legs, as if wishing to free more and more limbs to surround the half-orc.

Ok, I think that's it though my head is still spinning. You all knew the vines creeper snaring stuff was coming! All I know for sure is Haynuus takes 13 hp damage (1 from being slapped by leg-vines, 12 from being crushed by them) and is now grappled. Though this means the dragon thing is fully engaged with Haynuus crushing for now, and so is technically grappled too!

Right, Ameena and Deephold are holding actions. Ameena, you could technically act ahead of the creature, but of course there's nothign to act against until it grabs Haynuus. So I assume Ameena acts after this. Deephold will act just after Ameena.

Petal's intimidate sort of happens narrativelty but doens't - nothing was rolled, and Haynuus acts first, so I'm not counting the action resolved mechanically. So technically Petal could do her standard/move actions (although she's been force moved back five feet like a five foot step so I'm saying can't actually move again, just that she possesses a move action for potion grabbing, weapon grabbing, etc)

Sorry Ian, your 18 was good, Haynuus's grapple bonus was good, it just rolled well so you were even, and then it got a size bonus to make it not even! Obviously, you need to roll a grapple roll for any action you want to do. If you want to try and inflict the hurt on it, go ahead, if you want to try and escape crushing vines, then that might be a better idea :D

Also, for no apparent reason whatsoever can everyone go ahead and roll me a d20 please. No reason. Just a straightforward boss fight happening here!

d20 = 1d20=9 Petal will move to H8.

"Haynuus!", Petal shouts, as the horrific plant thing grabs him. Realizing she had to act quickly regardless of the cost to herself, Petal opens her mind the Song of the area. Moving quickly around the party while the monster is engaged with Haynuus so that she has a clear shot at the ribs and odd rocklike things floating inside the beast, she reaches deep within the earth to the FUL mana slumbering just under the crust.

Once the sorceress feels she has strong control over the slightly damaged mana, she touches her index fingers and thumbs together in a diamond shape and focuses her will on the area where Deephold had been hacking at the beast ribs earlier. To her sorcerous vision, inside the symbol made by her hands, there is a small spinning ball of fore held there. She wills the fire to fly free and strike the beast inside its body cavity by invoking the mystical rune IR.

"EE FUL IR" she shouts, as the mana flies free on the wings of her will, becoming a visible raging fireball as soon as it materializes in the true world.

EE FUL IR (4d6+4=24)

Haynuus's only thought was to escape. It was exactly what he feared would happen, only it was a surprise that it was happening to him! With all of his might he decided to try to pull free, rather than attempt to nut (head butt) the monster which was his usual tactic while grappling orcish opponents. A scream set off inside as he tried to pull free, and due to a trick of the mind he could see a picture of Westian through the pain of what felt like his flesh being rendered from his skeleton (I'll take that +1 thanks!).

All he wanted to do was to get away from this accursed place.

OOC - Grapple Check Base attack bonus + Strength modifier + Westian modifier (1d20+16=26)

The blessings of Larethian, Westian and OB be upon you! Unless I've miscalculated though, your BAB should only be +7 for beign a 7th level fighter, you have +4 strength, and +1 for Westian's bonus, making +12? Also, can you roll me a separate d20 roll for the 'no reason whatsoever' thing? :)

Remember that you can always make a melee attack that, instead of doing damage, basically grants +2 on to an ally's next attack (or grapple roll in this case). It's what Deephold will attempt, and Ameena you can try that too if you wanted. You only need to hit AC10 with that attack. Of course, I might let you attackign the vines themselves grant a bonus too. You just never know! :p

Ameena isn't entirely surprsied at the creature's ability to reach out with a mass of vines and grab things - she just wishes it wasn't grabbing one of her friends. Murafu not being ones to dwell too long on "what if"s, she focuses on the moment at hand and, seeing one of her friends in danger from a huge predator, moves forward and hacks at the vines surrounding Haynuus. She gets as close behind the creature's head as she can, figuring that no creature like this has the ability to turn its head far enough around in order to chomp (or breathe horrible green gas) at something standing practically beside the base of its neck. She knows she certainly wouldn't be able to reach something there, were she stuck lying on the ground and the creature small enough in relation to her.

OOC - I'm guessing the vine-dragon grants Combat Advantage as its too busy grappling Haynuus to be able to fend off other attacks...? Well, I'll make my roll based on that and you can alter it if need be...Attack Roll = 17 (6+9+2), damage = 14 (1+6+3+2+2, first roll is base damage, others are Sneak Attack). Narratively, Ameena is trying to hack only at the vines grabbing Haynuus, in an attempt to free him so he can do what she originally said they should all do, and leg it out of the area as fast as possible ;).
