I definitely get your point, Adamo. Bumping into a wall just to make sure it's there is definitely annoying once you know there's a version of DM where you no longer have to do that.
I've got both the Amiga and PC versions running on my Mac so I'll give the Amiga one a full run soon.

oh, I think you forgot about new sound system - you hear steps of different monsters.

Amiga version had full spatial stereo sounds. It was quite a big deal actually, and the ST couldn't come anywhere near that
Re: Is the Amiga version of DM considered to be the best?
It might be negligible(more so nowadays) but what about loading time? Disk accessing et cetera..
Which version did start up the fastest?
Amiga or Atari ST ^^

I don't know if it's the best or not, but I always run an Amiga version if I have the choice, purely because it's what I had growing up and played until I drove the 500 into the ground in my late teens.
I basically just want it to be like it was when I was a 'hopper

Guess I am alone in preferring the SNES version.

Well, let's put it like this: you're probably not all alone but you're also not in the majority. But who says that the majority has to be right?
Anyway, what do you like about the SNES version? Or in what do you think it's better than the other versions? Discuss!

Well, it did seem more polished. The monsters looked fiercer and the music and ambient sounds were a nice addition. Also It was the first version I played too. Just found it again recently and am enjoying the nostalgia.

@skellimancer : I second you on this. I always liked japanese designs of DM : SNES monsters are very nicely penciled, Theron's Quest's intro or box art are kinda close to "Records of Lodoss War" fantasy anime series. I tried SNES DM on emulator but that was definitely unplayable. I wonder how you could play DM with a joypad !

Oh its not that bad. Just tap Select for move mode (up and down is back and forward, left and right strafes and L + R turns you around).linflas wrote: I wonder how you could play DM with a joypad !
Re: Is the Amiga version of DM considered to be the best?
Although it doesn't really mean much today, when the PC version came out, the fact that it ran from a hard disk and reduced the loading times massively made it the best version at the time for me.
Re: Is the Amiga version of DM considered to be the best?
The PC version is also easiest to run on a MAC using Boxer (a nice interface for DosBox).
Re: Is the Amiga version of DM considered to be the best?
I think the biggest difference between Amiga and PC back then was the sound. Atari and Amiga had a better sound chipset than PCs. And as Amiga had stereo for DM, it's soundly superior.
