Some miscellaneous questions that have piled up

Post by Monoven »

So I'm nearing the end of the game and I'm looking for some answers to a few lingering questions(for those of you that read my Early Inquisitor post I went ahead and took the RA key and cleared out level 6[7] though I stopped short of snagging the Master Key, and I opened up the second express stairway--I had a spare key from level 9[10] to open the Skeleton stairs on Lord Chaos' level).

1. I haven't used many Ful Bombs or charges on Fury and Stormring and I'm wondering if there are any good places to use them left. Initially I figured I'd save them for the dragon, but now I think I've got enough green magical boxes and poison potion left to gas him to death. I'm thinking of clearing out the Oitu room because that would round out my Boots of Speed collection, but it seems like I'd have to lug a lot of equipment around.

2. Is there a bug in the Amiga version that makes anti-magic reduce damage from all sources? Boris seems to be taking about a fifth of the damage that my other champions are and I can't figure out why(the only thing that seems to stand out from the others are his anti-magic and wisdom). I thought it might have been the Jewel Symal, but taking it didn't seem to affect anything(his armor consists of a helmet, mail aketeton, legmail, and boots of speed if that makes any difference).

3. Pendant Feral ups my skill level, but it doesn't seem to boost my stats which seems like it just makes it harder to get to the next level. Is there a hidden value I'm not seeing?

Thanks!

1 - I never actually bother using such gear, relying on pure spellcasting from my two (I go through the game as a duo) characters, plus the Firestaff once it can Invoke. The Dragon I always just use the two-step dance thingy to kill, so he's a bit of a wuss, really ;). This kind of equipment is only there in case you happen to want to use it - some people spam Magic Boxes in certain fights, some (like me) don't bother and just run around madly trying not to get hit, or use the "dance" method.

2 - I don't know, because I've never played the Amiga version and anyway I never really look at stats too closely ;).

3 - No, you're right, it does just give you a straight +1 level. I think the incomplete Firestaff does as well, and definitely gives you (well, the character holding it) +2 Wizard levels once it's complete. Mind you, by the time you get this stuff, you're probably unlikely to be levelling up much further anyway, unless you're one of those who likes to spend hours training your characters ;).

1. I never use them, but I always carry them around with me for some reason. "Just in case".

2. No idea, never played Amiga either.

3. It increases skill level, so your spells should be that bit more powerful. I don't know if it makes it harder to get to the next level or not. If the game tracks your experience, it should still keep increasing as before and level jumps should be the same. But I am not sure. I would be interested if anyone knew the answer to this.

2. Amiga Version: There can be some issues on some chars hps sometimes. I remember a friend of mine having a daroou that literally could not die. took 20 mon ful level fireballing at walls and falling to death was ineffective as well.
This could be related to anti fire or as you said to anti magic. But it is a mystery and I do not know of any clues dealing with that occurence.

1. Eventually you will -or maybe should - adapt a play style where you use the stuff you find. I have not managed to do it, I tend to keep my stuff and ultimately never using it(afraid of spending the precious effects, like freezing and fireballing or shielding). At the end of the day it is probably best to use all items shortly after getting them. One riddle or two needs you to use e.g. magic boxes. But I have no ideas where to use the special items on, maybe golems to make the fights against these more epic or on knights... the dragon is too late in the game really and it is not that strong.

3. you should search old topics for this additional level stuff , I can´t remember. And look in the dm /csb encyclopedia as well

Boots of Speed on all Champions!!! WHEEEEEEE!!!!
Great finding.
I thought there were only two.
Indeed there are four of them, I had missed the well hidden one.

In my opinion, I don't think *anyone* ever found all 4 boots without help or mindless wall bashing. I only found the pair on level 11 behind multiple illusion walls after seeing a printed map in a magazine, and unless you went around bashing your head on every wall, it's extremely unlikely to find that pair. I'm not even sure what FTL were thinking, it's a very odd (and unfair) way to hide a secret.

Honestly, I don't remember if I had located all four pairs before I saw complete DM maps on the internet, but I remember that many people (including myself) tried to map the whole DM by tapping on every single wall in the whole dungeon trying to find every single fake wall. Nowadays it sounds crazy but as we all know we used to have much more time for games back in the old games. These old games used to be pretty hard and cruel - nowadays there would be a PRO TIP shining on the screen with a sign telling THIS WAY TO A SECRET.

Ha ha, indeed! I do feel a little sorry for modern gamers being spoonfed. That said, I've just started playing BioShock 1 and I'd be completely lost without the onscreen tips. (Although, to be fair, that's the built in tutorial and is how many games handle familiarising the player with concepts and controls.)

Back to the "misc questions" aspect of this thread, and I have a couple:

1) Why doesn't Chaos pursue you beyond the large room he's dicking about in?

2) FTL removed Ful Bomb making ability becuase "you could use up all your flasks". But they left Zo Bombs in, so you could still lose all flasks. An oversight, or something more sinister?

1) He was punished changed from grey lord to chaos lord, sent to rot forever trapped in this room.

2) Zo Bombs. You mean, Poison bombs, one makes using a flask with a Zo Ven spell.
There are few things not finished in DM, may be they had to cut to fit the game on a 360 KB floppy disk.
Actually, it did not fit on a standard single sided 360 KB floppy, so they used a non standard format giving 400 KB.

Just as a hypothetical, what symbols do you think they'd have used for a Ful Bomb?

Ful Gor. In fact, it apparently worked in very early versions, but was removed for the "destroy all flasks" issue. Which is why not doing the same for Ven bombs makes no sense....! (I meant Ven bombs before, not Zo Bombs, sorry).

I know I made VEN bombs, so I guess it must have been on my first Atari ST (had a MEGA later).

I surely thought I had made FUL bombs as well, but then, that was long before I found DM for PC.
(Oh my, was I ever excited when I found the PC version. Took it straight home and played it. Good times indeed.)
