When a character dies, then the party leader is changed to someone else.
But there's nothing stopping you from changing it back again. And a dead party leader can interact and carry-in-mouse objects.
And (after some experimentation with a box full of boulders) has no burden limitations.

The problem here, of course, is that whenever I get my party optimized to consist entirely of dead characters, the game stops responding and I get a blue screen.

oh yeah, the blue screen of hell...The trick here is to die while being in a mirror 
I'm not kidding, btw. Just walk into a wall until you are low on health, poison yourself with a poison cloud and then die while you are inside a mirror in the hall of champions. You'll be amazed what you can do then.
This might only be possible in the original DM and CSBwin, though.

By the way... what does the new version do if you get a character killed and then dsb_champion_fromparty the survivors?
(The current version works for a while but segfaults if you change leader)

Hmm. I would guess by default a no-switch-leader-to-corpse fix would leave the party stuck in ghost mode. Which might be the most correct behaviour?

In ESB, under ESB Options, there is a checkbox for "End game if whole party removed." If the box is unchecked and the entire party is removed, you will revert to ghost mode. If it is checked, you'll go to the "The End" screen.
(As of 0.79 it's impossible to select a dead character as leader so the Lua error will be resolved)
