Re: New DMute?
I had a thought about the use of a future editor. Yes, I know that's way in the future, but I think it's pertinent:
<b> Make it so that it can't read existing compressed RTC files, or make RTC files use a password before the editor can read them.</b>
This may be controversial for some users, but I think it would go some way to avoid what's happening with DM Java: People are simply starting up the editor and looking at the dungeon to see where everything is, which totally kills the gameplay. Protecting dungeon files would also protect other user's hard work.
I think this is something worth considering, but not sure if it be detrimental to the acceptance of RTC as a Dungeon Building tool.

Yes, Gambit, your point is important.
I fully agree with Gambit.
I made this point on DMJava. It kind of got lost mixed with auto map issues.
Whith no care about this the game's spirit can be lost.
Kind of stupid to play with an eye on cheats.
A simple answer is: do no cheat. Well, an easy answer that does not really work.
Many adventure games have become that way, the top is games sold whith the official walkthrough on the CD.

I'd more support the password protection than the 'you cannot edit finished .rtc maps'. I know that passwords could be side stepped by anyone determined, but would stop all us casual gamers from giving in to curiosity if a puzzle seeemd impossible, plus make sure we don't accidentally spoil any complex ruin a designer's hard work on mapping, puzzles and graphics.
Was unable to (permenantly) kill off ian_scho (Haynuus), Ameena, oh_brother (Westian), money (Falkor), raixel (Petal) and Lord_Bones (Aurek) in the DM D&D game Time's Champions!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO MADE THE GAME WHAT IT WAS - GREAT!

Re: Yep!
Well hopefully a new gaming community will start with the advent of this editor. Their's actually a gaming community for Unlimited Adventures.
A password would be useful.
You could actually have a collection of code in each map file that prevents it from being viewed. Normally it isn't there, but the designer has the option to turn it on, thus permantly removing the ability to view it. Of course a backup is automatically made everytime this is done. Afer all you wouden't want the designer accidentaly locking away what he just worked on would you?

Protecting files
Unless anyone can come up with a really good reason as to why not, then I'm still fairly set on the 'you cannot edit *.rtc files' option.
The development process will use text files (and eventually a GUI editor which produces the same text files) and RTC will then internally convert those files into *.rtc ones. In this way the author will always be able to edit their own creations and no-one else will. Of course if anyone chooses to distribute the source text files as well as the final rtc file (for example to demonstrate how to do a particular style of puzzle) then that's up to them, but the choice will always remain with them.

Wasn't this debate settled in another thread? This is definitely the way to go, so there it is...two votes again! : )
