I have one thought in mind, but I can't see that it couldn't be used for a number of things. Could monsters be given the ability to generate a constant spell effect on the square they are on? And could a spell effect generate graphics on the tile/wall/ceiling like the footprints/window does?
Thinking - having slimes able to create a trail of wall/floor slime graphics. Gambit's invisible creature effect, or floating effect - both of which could be interrupted by a spell (beholders falling down pits, the invisible monsters you can see if you use the right spell).
The main thing that made me thik this was giants...creating a leg monster, that generates a ceiling tile that gives the visual effect of a larger body disappearing out of sight. Even funnier, you kill that and chested inside is the 'body' monster, so that now you are facing a crippled giant crawling at you. Eh, odd flight of fancy. Plus, if spells are customisable, you could have the leg monster able to cast a 'fist spell' infront of it that causes blunt damage to the tile, and also a fist would be visible to a fast party that moves back ; )
heh, an engine doesn't have to be hugely flexible as long as you are mad enough to bend it to out of shape yourself : )
