I beat the game. Thank you Paul!

Post by Mayo »

First Off i wanted to say thank you to Paul steven's for porting this game. I didn't even know he was part of (or run these forums) when i originally joined, but after beating Dungeon Master I seen his name in the credits.

I just wanted to thank him for doing this for us all as a community.

I originally played this game as a kid on Atari ST religiously. It really was the game that drove my love for PC gaming in general. I remember looking years ago for a Port to PC and all I could find was DOS box ones that I couldn't save my game, which was useless.

I literally found this game 1 week ago and played like crazy. Enjoying it even more than i remembered. The cool puzzles the thoughout out game play. The ability to get lost and not have the game hold my hand like most PC games these days. Total epic.

Ill be honest I got hung up in a few places and eventually did look at some walk thru to help but eventually BEAT Dungeon Master after 39 years.

As a kid i only made it to the dragon lvl but never figured out the firestaff.

I now ported my characters to Chaos strikes back and will slowly try to beat that game.

I really appreciate Paul for doing this because I would have never beat the game without this port. And i look forward into looking into playing Dungeon Master 2 once i beat Chaos strike back.

Thank you very much Paul!

Woo, gratz on completing DM for the first time after so long :D.
Good luck with CSB - don't feel bad if you spend most of your time wandering around completly lost, clueless, and repeatedly dying to monsters/traps/multi-pit drops. That's bascially how we all started out and you can always just ask if you get really super stuck and need some hints or something as to wtf you're supposed to be doing :D. Expect to die a lot - it's fine, we've all been there.

Annotated maps are an absolute must for this game. Make sure you have meticulous ones.

I remember for the first year thinking the game had a downer ending because of what happens when you bring the Firestaff back to the start.

Then I figured out how to get the power gem, but couldn't figure out what to do when I found myself trapped on levels 13 & 14. I tried fusing Lord Chaos, but hadn't trapped him in fluxcages so it didn't work. It took getting the hint book to figure out the answer.

Well since you asked, I am currently stuck on CSB 4th Corbum

Dain - Onyx key.

I must have used it in a different path. No idea where the other onyx keys are located.

So any help would be appreciated but ill keep looking. And yes CSB is much harder of a game. Almost too hard. Some of the things you need to figure out are almost flukes/accidents.It's not as clear as DM that's for sure. Well at least some of them doesn't even seem to have hints just randomly down a pit or through an invisible wall. In fact there are so many false walls, compared to DM, I now just slam my characters into walls 24/7. lol Feels abusive.

I just wander around for hours down the same paths hoping to stumble into something "new". I'm certain 95% of all the monsters are all killed off, its the puzzles and keys that are messing me up. I have something like 8 chest full of dragon meat all parked at the junction of ways, 2 chest full of hellhound legs, no worries on food or water.... as im still eating piles of worm round. My characters are pretty darn tough because I keep ending up in the DDD and the "respawning areas" re-killing the same monsters over and over and over, looking for "new areas" searching for this darn Onyx key or a "missed" switch on the wall or something.... sigh.

I have like 8+ iron keys, a ra key, a saphire key, couple gold keys, square keys, lock pick, and i already found and used the master key. Still no luck on the onyx key for dain path.

I literally gave up on finding the skeleton key, then i found it randomly on the top level by the demon chamber sign just laying on the ground.HAHA this game.

Oh, nice, you're really far then :D.
The banging-into-walls thing is absolutely something I did when I played it "back in the day" - I can remember walking along corridors one square at a time, pausing after each step to attempt to sidestep both ways to see if the walls were real :D.
I think the Skeleton Key is normally held by one of those Demons - maybe it died somehow "offscreen" (or you killed it without noticing by yeeting a Fireball into the blackness and hit it) or something :D.
I think you might possibly be able to sneak the Dain Corbum...there's one you can and I think it's Ros <--> Dain, because there are fake pits you can step on to get around the Pillar and yoink a Corbum without needing to do "Part Two" of that particular path like you're supposed to :D. But the Dain key isn't the Onyx, it's the Ruby (Emerald for Ros, Solid for Ku, and I think Turquoise for Neta? It's got blue in it, anyway).

Thank you!
I quickly tried to get this working but,no success, i had no time to figure it out yet. I'll give it a go a bit later for sure so thank you for that!! Very cool program. Do you happen to know a step by step for this program on how to find specific objects on this program ? Also will it find object that have been moved? For example I am looking for a necklace i had and discarded ages ago, but again i have no idea where exactly i discarded it

Regardless if you know or not, it doesn't matter really.. i'm sure I will figure it out when I have a bit more time to mess around with it.

I am currently working on finishing up a few rooms/ and areas I never fully completed (or missed a few things) Looking for a necklace i dropped, an onyx key.

I found this guide on keys on this forum, so ill also look into that later. All the onyx key location are on that cheat sheet.

Yah im pretty close to being done I think lol but then as soon as i "think" im done I hit another puzzle that messes me up and sends me on a wild goose chase.. lol

I am also in need of the ruby key (dain), but i know exactly where it is located. From what I read you apparently need boots of speed on ALL your characters to complete it, and i only have 3 sets currently out of 4. Not all puzzles are solved so im running around figuring them out one at a time looking for one more set of boots boots of speed or an onyx key.. . Plus if push comes to shove ill just suicide 1 of my characters, put boots of speed on those complete the "puzzle" and resurrect the guy i killed. Least i hope that will work..

I'm hoping if i remove enough weight (get their inventory ALL gray) and attempt the running challenge i will have no issue with all 4 characters(as i have finished most running challenges by doing this) but like i said ill resort to killing a characters if need be. Also, still looking for this onyx key..So kind of wrapping up the loose ends and double back finishing everything before i finish the game. (or least that's my hopes.)

You don't need Boots of Speed. I've never had more than one pair, if that, in either game in any of the numerous times I've played. If you need to move fast, just make sure everyone is in the grey (ie, not carrying too much stuff) and isn't low on stamina.
