Played Theron's Quest in dmcsb (warning, potential spoilers for one of the quests)

Post by RogerS »

I just completed Theron's Quest in meynaf's dmcsb engine. I only used Theron, since it's his quest after all

After stepping through the teleporter in the Hall of Champions, I was teleported to a long hallway with a row teleporters to the various quests along the side.

I chose Village of Thieves as the first one, which in hindsight probably wasn't the smartest choice. Since I spent the majority of my food bar at the start training up my priest skills to get my buffs up and running and a little bit of wizard training as well, food started to become an issue towards the end. I had expected to find food further into that dungeon.

I already saw some familiar elements from CSB there like torch sconces used as switches, and "run and jump". Also saw some interesting new stuff like timed doors needing to be opened in sequence in the correct order.

I got very close to dying in the run and jump section when I entered a room with a bunch of gigglers and a giant scorpion, and got surrounded by gigglers while the scorpion attacked me. At that point I hadn't got any weapon yet. Luckily one of the gigglers got tired of trying to steal from my empty hands and moved away, and I ran to the other side of the room and tried to punch some gigglers to death. The scorpion soon came along again though and I had to escape out of there due to being poisoned and only having a sliver of health left.

I then proceeded to lure out a lone giggler, and he dropped a ruby key. I used that to open one of the doors in the starting room. Luckily I found the weapon Fury there (along with a scorpion guarding it) :)

Towards the end of that quest, my food bar was getting dangerously low, and in the end I got out of there with only the tiniest sliver of my food bar left.

I then decided to do the rest of the quests in order, and luckily I quickly ran into some screamers in Aktuba and could finally fill my stomach.

There were some interesting puzzles, and I recognized some familiar elements and parts of sections from both DM and CSB. It seemed more focused on puzzles than difficult fights. The monsters seemed overall weaker compared to some of their CSB counterparts at least.

All in all it was an enjoyable experience. I'm glad I decided to play it :)

Hi RogerS,

Thanks for these infos. it answered a few questions I had about this game. It is good to know that the sword Retaliator remained in the dungeon after the game. As you maybe know, I am writing a prequel novel of DM and I would like to play TQ and get an idea on how things are left behind after we completed the game.

I finally did Theron's Quest With RTC for the first time and like RogerS, I only took Theron. He explained very well the experience with this game and agree with his comments, so I have nothing to add except that the horror sounds were well appreciated. Too bad the creators didn't do the same with Dungeon Master. That was fun. I should have done this years ago :D

Now I understand more the importance of these location pointed out by Beowuuf, so I updated my Dungeon Master World Map by placing a Theron's Quest entrance in the desert. Too bad Theron didn't leave a clue where he put his beautiful armor. There is not much left in there after all :(

@ ChristopheF for your encyclopedia or anyone else who wish them.
I drew the maps of the 7 places and the final with all accessories identified in their places and very well detailed.

But before showing them, there are some places where I didn't understand the mechanics and I couldn't enter, but that didn't stop me from finishing the game.
Number 1:
Spoiler
In the tomb of Sarmon, The waterfall location, I was teleported so fast without control, so I am not sure if I missed something
Number 2:
Spoiler
In the tomb of Sarmon, the floor where you get the Skeleton key, you go back track all the way; you pass the section with the rigged pits; if you haven't fallen you pass the wooded door and get down the stair in front of you. the room below have teleporters as well and they prevent me from going where I want.
Number 3:
Spoiler
Is there something to do with Sarmon's skeleton?
But As I said, I was able to complete the game without visiting these 2 locations.

I've put the detailed maps of Theron's Quest in my cloud for those who want to take a look and help me complete what's missing in Sarmon's Labyrinth.

Would you like me to post your TQ maps on the Encyclopaedia ? If yes, can you please send them to me?
I can't find a way to download images from flickr, that site has such a shitty user experience imo.

Yes, where should I send them? But someone will need to revise first my maps before, because I had problems to visit at least 2 locations in the tomb of Sarmon.
