Nonsense FTL news in ancient Czech gaming magazine

Post by Gambit37 »

I just noticed this strange scan on the DM Encyclopedia that mentions games that were nothing to do with FTL:
http://dmweb.free.fr/files/Magazine,Sco ... 2,Scan.jpg

It is found on this page:
http://dmweb.free.fr/ftl-games/interviews-and-articles/

A quick Google translate reveals the article is almost entirely incorrect, somehow supposing that FTL was a rebooted studio previously known as Gargoyle Games. Amazing that you could get away with such rubbish without any editorial oversight! This article should never have been published!

If you see this Christophe, you might want to either remove it from the site, or maybe add an editorial note about it being almost entirely fake news! :D

Nice find!
I'll add the following comment:
The author of this article mixed up information between the British company Gargoyle Games and their Faster Than Light (FTL) label, and the American company FTL Games who made Dungeon Master, wrongly assuming they were the same company because they used the same name.

To be fair, in the 20th century researching such things was much harder than it is in this internet age. While the article seems to have been written in 1995 or 1996, the internet was still in its childhood (I won't say infancy because the WWW was established by that point. I'd even say it was hitting puberty around 1994 with Eternal September and growing to adulthood by the 21st century) and had nowhere near the amount of information readily available that it does today.

You make a good point @slickrcbd. I sometimes take it for granted how easy it is to find things out these days. Although clearly I didn't do enough here! I should have read the Wikipedia for Gargoyle Games as Christophe did: at least it now makes more sense why the article is confused about the FTL name. Clearly I need to do better research too! :D

Gargoyle! That’s a blast from the past. Knocked out some good games for the 8-bits, and now seeing it mentioned, I remember their FTL label. Can even picture the logo.
