Hidden Puzzles

Post by MasterWuuf »

I have noticed a few places in Dungeon Master that can be bypassed without really keeping a person from finishing the game.
The speedboots behind a number of fake walls is one.

My latest question is about the floor plate in the room that is opened by taking a large number of steps and turning around to see the wall opening.
There is a floor plate that doesn't seem to do anything.
I have heard it will activate something if you can get a group of mummies or skeletons 'frozen' on that plate.
I've never been able to get it to do anything, so I'm asking if anyone has some information about it.
Thanks ahead of time, if anyone has some usable input.

P.S. After all my years of DM play, the mummies scared me twice this time. Ha. Gotta love this game!

Which floor of the dungeon is the one which has the floor plate you are describing?

You might want to check out the hint book at dmweb.free.fr. While the guide has a couple errors in it, the only solution I know of being wrong is the one for the pit maze and I think one button (can't recall which) is one square off on the map. I penciled in a solution in my copy, but it's in storage with all my old Apple II game paraphernalia and feelies from when I was a kid.

If I recall correctly there's a wall further south that opens when skeletons are on the plate.

It's hidden out of sight so I considered it what TVtropes called a "guide dang it"

Fun fact: If you could find all four speedboots and could prove it to FTL, they'd consider inviting you to be a beta tester on future games.

Regarding the puzzle where skeletons step on the plate, have a look at this map and find item "D" -- there's an arrow that shows the wall that it opens: http://dmweb.free.fr/games/dungeon-mast ... /level-05/

Oh you can certainly skip a whole bunch of sections, yeah - basically all of Level Five (there's nothing there that you need, just some treasure items like the Staff of Claws) and at least one big chunk of Level Twelve (the whole section with the Darc armour set, also the Spider Room near the end of the level). And plenty of little side rooms here and there across the game which only have non-essential items in. The only stuff you need are the three Ra keys, the Master Key, the Firestaff, and the Power Gem. And any keys that open doors blocking your way to any of those. All the other items in the game range in usefulness in getting you to those items :D.

The first time I ever played DM, I bypassed level 5 (Treasure Stores) and managed to get through the riddle room with the mirror from level 3 and the bow and coin from level 4. It wasn't until the second time I played that I decided to explore the dungeon a bit more and discovered the rest of level 5. It's a shame because there are some really great puzzles there i.e. the pit and teleporter rooms. Oh and some nice treasure too...

Yeah - if you watch any of the speedrun playthroughs in the Race to Fusion thread of this forum, you gain a quick appreciation for just how much of the game can be skipped if you are only trying to stick to the basics. I've always been of the mentality that I want to explore the entire dungeon during my own playthroughs, but it is pretty impressive seeing how quickly the most experienced players can blow through the game.

Checked it out. If I revisit the area, is there any way to lure a skeleton to that room? Or a way to respawn a couple of skeletons there?
Sadly, I know I murdered any creatures that were in that area before leaving it.

RE: The four sets of speed boots. I don't use four heroes anymore but I surely have found all four sets (Are there definitely four sets?
The set through the series of fake walls was the one that took me forever to find.
I never tried to figure just how much faster a team travels with speed boots on every hero but,
like a child, I wanted everyone to have a new set of 'fancy boots' to fight in. Ha

You can't get a fully equipped team until the game is practically over, as the last one is when you choose which door/treasure to acquire on level 7 before retrieving the Firestaff. After that you just have to get the power gem and fuse Lord Chaos.
That said, having everyone use boots of speed does make it a little bit easier to trap Lord Chaos, but only a little due to the cooldown on Fluxcage, although you can sidestep that by passing the Firestaff around.

I went back to this room, luring a skeleton to the room.
I used a freeze-life with the skeleton on that plate.
Then I beat my head against every possible wall in the area.
No luck, at least for me.

I had already gone in the adjoining room and pushed the button on the wall, revealing some goodies.
Any chance that button replaced the original (skeleton on the plate) way to open a hidden wall?

I don't have a working version of DM to test this out, but pretty sure it works. Did you check the map I linked to? It's only a couple of squares away from the floor plate.

I tried every section of wall, both tapping on it and trying to walk through it.
I did lure a single skeleton warrior onto that plate.
Is there any chance I need to get a group of them on the plate?
If so, I'll probably try that, but I hate to try it if someone knows it isn't the problem.

P.S. I downloaded the 3D version of DM and I'm enjoying it. It looks so different, I keep losing track of just where I am.
At this point I've made it to the multiple doors that have to be opened with keys from the different rooms down the hall.
