In the bitmaps.txt override file, there's a bit that is on or off to dictate whether or not an image is partially transparent.
But it some cases it appears that there are different levels of translucency. Is this the case? Is there another data file that we can't yet access that specifies this level of translucency? If not, what is the level of transparency that you're using - 50%?

Everything is either opaque or 50% translucent according to whether that bit is clear or set. Which graphics look different?

Black flames for one, fireballs for 2.
But it's probably more to do the colour of the graphics and what else it's being shown against. Probably just an optical illusion.
