Can't hit anything

Post by Diesel »

I'm on level 4, no matter what I do, I can't hit anything.
The Floating Eyes slaughter me.

You mean the Wizard's Eyes on Level 6? Not any known bugs there as far as I know - what have you 'hit' them with?

Nope

Nope, level 4, the one where you first get the floating eyes (Beholders in D&D terms)

Beholders

Post by Big-J-Q »

I thought the first beholder level was level 5...

Level 0 - Hall of Champions
Level 1 - Mummies and Screamers
Level 2 - Rocks and Trolls
Level 3 - Purple Worms
Level 4 - Slimeys and Snakes
Level 5 - Beholders & Skeletors!

Depends on how you count it, I suppose

But now to the point.

Strange that you haven't been able to hit them... Try spells? Fireballs are very effective... Although if you play the RTC-dungeon, you don't have the necessary runes yet...

Now a question to the veterans:

Are melee weapons doing too little damage? I'm not sure, it's been years since I last played the original DM, but I think melee weapons were much more effective.
(However, do we really need more killing power? I think RTC's difficulty level is quite okay; CSB may even be hard!)

I always count HoC as level 1 - it's not really logical to count from 0 except in programming terms. We count from 1 to 10 because we have ten fingers - why suddenly count from 0 here. That's never made any sense to me whatsoever. HoC may not be a 'true' level in terms of the game, but it's still the first level!

Three words - collosion detection bug
It's impossible on higher difficulty settings to hit a moving target unless you get them to move into your spells

Best idea deisel is to go make sure you are toe to toe befroe firing, or that they have just moved befroe you fire a spell, or make sure they are against a wall

OT: Counting

Post by Big-J-Q »

I know it may feel a little odd considering HoC as the level 0, but I have grown accustomed to it.

Besides, in some countries (it was either great britain or USA), the ground floors of the tall buildings (can't recall the word! I'm ashamed.) are not counted, and the first floor above the ground floor is the 1st floor.

The word you're looking for is 'ground' floor, at least in the UK. Interesting point - I hadn't thought of it like that. Still seems weird to number from 0 though in game terms, so we'll have to agree to differ.

Lol, while that's true, inconsistencies are fun
Example - america's put the month then day compared to our day/month numbering yet we say july 4th to their 4th of july, etc

So no matter how we number buildings, I go with level 1 for HoC!

It's working now?

Post by Diesel »

Yea, it's level 5, HOC is level 0, or not counted as a level at all to me, nothing to fight, so it's a "free" level. To me HOC is just a nifty way to include "Character Selection"
I just tried it today, and whacked a floating eye for 22 damage, apparently I was having an EXTREMELY bad stroke of luck the other night.
I'm currently using the Axe....funny after playing this and CSB on the Atari ST MANY MANY years ago, I never took the axe, and just used swords instead.
I got hardcore after finishing it with 4 characters the first time, and have played it since then only using 1 character, It's a lot more fun that way, and Death is final, no running back with 3 sets of bones to a
"VI station".

George!! Thank You!!! For porting this and CSB over to the PC, I was using UAE to play it again, but then accidentally ran across a link from the DM Encyclopaedia!!

DM, and CSB......and (drumroll......) System Shock are my all-time favorite games.

OT: Foreign words

Post by Big-J-Q »

No, I wasn't thinking about the ground floor, but the word for the tall buildings... Not skyscraper, but the little smaller ones.

The first System Shock game is also one of my favourites, I can't remember how many times I've completed it... Must be about 5-10 times.

Old games rock!

Yep, I rememebr that game, very cool. What did people think of the second one?

And is the word tower block?

The only other word I can think of is 'lobby' but that's really the reception area of hotels/offices etc - not the ground floor itself...

Never played System Shock, but I do have SS2 which I still haven't got around to playing. I bought it after I played Thief - now there's a fantastic game, probably my favourite of recent times. Anyone else like Thief?

YES!!!!!!!!!

Post by Diesel »

System Shock (The first one, not so much the second one) scared the crap out of me......
I'm glad there are websites out there that had the complete audio from the game.
(Nothing like hearing Shodan saying "Who are you?")
If I can find the URL, apparently somebody has ported SS1 to the new SS2, I haven't tried it out myself yet.. (downloaded it, haven't tried it), so we'll see.
SS2 was OK............but nothing like SS1.
"Captive" was another cool game from the Atari ST, kind of mindless, but a GREAT game nonetheless.
And, YES!!!!!!! Old Games ROCK!!!!!!!!
