Still No joy with 0.17 even starting up (Same as 0.16)
I posted after 0.16 with the same problem and gave up. 0.17 is the same. I have tried on 5 computers with different OS and the same result: Screen goes black, low res cursor appears briefly, then back to the desktop. No error message this time, and no log file either.I have tried using different screen res, and even a clean Win98 SE install, and tried the screen settings in the config.txt file.
Any ideas?

Graham, www.gab2001uk.com

Re: Still No joy with 0.17 even starting up (Same as 0.16)
These kinds of problems are always the worst to troubleshoot. I have a similar problem at work - some of the software we sell just refuses to work on certain users' machines and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.
I appreciate how frustrating this must be for you, but really don't know what to suggest. I have never seen this problem, neither on my Win 98 SE at home nor my Win 2000 at work. Both these machines have Matrox graphics cards.
I hope someone can give you some advice - I know I'm stumped!

Re: problems
No. Most of the computers have ATI graphics cards, one has an on-board SIS , the other a generic 8MB cheapo card.

Graham, www.gab2001uk.com

Re: problems
Daft question - but they do all have DirectX 3.0 or greater installed don't they?
Re: problems
Most have DirectX 7, my laptop has the latest version (8.?)as I have permanent internet connection, with Windows Update telling me when anything new is around.

Graham, www.gab2001uk.com

Re: problems
Might have nothing to do with it: but, I had a similar problem, you, know, just getting a black screen when starting RTC, and it was caused by the activated remote desktop in Netmeeting, and all worked fine after deactivating that.

Re: problems
I had already considered other programs interfering, so have tried shutting off everything except the essentials, but it made no difference. I am puzzled why I get the same on so many different computers, even with a clean install of the OS and no other software on it.

Graham, www.gab2001uk.com

Re: problems
Are you sure you're extracting everything from the zip correctly? Have you extracted everything with full paths? If not, it's possible to get the behaviour you described.
When installed correctly, your RTC folder should look something like this:
\
+Colours
\Data
+Manual
+Modules
+Portraits
\config.txt
\editing.txt
\readme.txt
\rtc.exe
Perhaps everything has ended up at the root level of the folder?

Re: problems
Gambit. You are a Genius!!!
I feel a complete idiot, for not extracting the files from Winzip properly, just dragging them all into a folder, so they ended up as you described.
Thanks again. Chaos is now going to get a good beating!

Graham, www.gab2001uk.com

Woohoo...
I'll leave this here as a bug as the code should really check that all the extra files it needs are present and give a helpful error message rather than just falling over in a heap!
