Monster turning

Post by Lubor Kolar »

I am surpriced with monster behaviour. I reached level 4 and I met the wasp. It soooo slow. Also fighting worms is pretty easy, because it seems that monster turn takes the same time as step.
I use tactics "hit and step away" and step aside the monster (I like rooms for this fighting because a lot of space). In real DM I was sometimes surpriced that monsters turned to me and attacked me. In RTC it is different, because I now that if that ugly purple worm just turned to face me, I have a plenty of time to run behind the worm and attack it from the back. It must make two turns to attack me, but since it takes a lot of time, worm is dead very soon.

If the monster behaviour is implemented in "actions" (assuming one action means attack/move/turn) and faster monsters can do actions more frequently than the slow ones, I preffer better timing, for example turn takes 1/2 action, ie each "action" could monster make 2 turns, attack or move take 1 action and spellcasting (for example dragon's fireballs) takes 1 1/2 actions.

In FTL's DM, monsters - especially worms - bad poor AI similar to RTC now. FLT's CSB had improved AI.

RTC .19 was worse than .20. Now, mosters back out of doors and poison clouds.

However, they won't enter a tile with poison cloud. This is different from FTL where they would enter and then run out. Probably should be based on monster's IQ (per type). I would expect a Wizard with more IQ than a Knight, and an worm/scorpion much less.

Turns taking half of the time a move takes would be good indeed. I'd even like to have a 180-degree-move being shown as two turns but only taking the time of a single turn.

It was implemented similar way in DM. I remeber as I hit the monster, ran around it to its back and next moment monster turnes 180 degrees and attacked me. I think this behaviour is far more real than one turn in time, because this makes monsters toooo slow. I know this solvers problems with "dancing" monsters, but this is not good IMHO.
I monster turn should take a little piece of time because as I wrote, in DM/CSB it was possible that monster had turned 180dgrs and attacked almost immediatelly. After this attack, of course, it was a delay between next monster action, but turning took almost no time for them.

Well, no. When I played FTL-DM for the first time I was quite busy getting along with monsters. But when I played with some playing experience I could outwalk the monsters in combat very easily also. Yet I agree that faster turning would make the game more interesting.
Komm zur bunten Seite der Macht!

Sorry, but I cannot agree :-). When I approached to the monster from the back, it very ofter turned around very quickly. 100% that 180dgrs turn didn't last so long so two monster moves would.

This has been toned down in RTC, as before it was coded to happen too much
It was a surprise move monsyters could do every so often in DM...it wasn't the standard
The standard was still for a monster to try to turn round

I can't recall some monsters doign it actually...for example I'm sure i've killed the dragon without it ever flipping...
Was unable to (permenantly) kill off ian_scho (Haynuus), Ameena, oh_brother (Westian), money (Falkor), raixel (Petal) and Lord_Bones (Aurek) in the DM D&D game Time's Champions!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO MADE THE GAME WHAT IT WAS - GREAT!
