Begin level (probably Level 1) stuck!?
Hey there!
I got a problem after killing the tree-like monster, how do I open the lock behind the monster? It seems there are no keys at all. Could anyone be kind enough to tell me where to find the key? Thanks!

Yeah, when I played the game for the very first time back in 1986 (hard to believe it was SEVENTEEN years ago!), it took me forever to find that key. In fact, I saved several hours into the game, and (not to bring in the "VI altars" thread) my party starved to death repeatedly as I looked for the key. They'd die, and I'd reload and resume looking for something I'd missed. <sigh>
Because the one key is on top of the gi trousers, I had picked up that key without noticing it. I didn't realize how much of a hint that key was until I replayed the game months later. Then it was: "Oh!" <smacks forehead> "I should have realized!"
On the related note, I have to agree with Beowuuf about the Arena key. I've played the game dozens of times, and playing the Arena a few days ago after a break of three years or so, I knew the key was around one of the floor grates, and it still took me more than two hours of game time to find it!

I never had a problem seeing the iron and solid keys. Perhaps my brightness settings were different.
On the other hand, getting enough gold keys to escape the "CHOOSE YOUR DOOR..." level took me months! I only much later discovered that one of the gold key doors on the previous level could be chopped down, saving an extra gold key. I couldn't seem to do it unless I resurrected a fighter, because the "chop" command won't appear until a certain experience is reached (half-way through Novice, I think?)...
