Please specify: RTC version used (probably 0.24 ?), dungeon used and if possible, the exact error text. You can also send me the file via email (my adress can be found in the memberlist) and I will check it for you.

In addition to the information requested by PitD (version, error text) I'd also like to know how you are starting RTC (explorer, Desktop object etc..) and if the savegame you're trying to load is from the same version as the version you try it to start with now (which it probably is, just want to be sure).

Useful extension questions, thx. BTW we're in the wrong thread here. But it seems strange to me playing a game, saving and then not able to read a savegame you just stored in RTC (must be the same version then?!)

OK People.

RTC_V022 - Dungeon Master - Original Version (only)
Windows ME
Running from desktop from zip file

When going to access saved game the program ends and the following message is posted:

Terminal Error
RTC has detected an access violation exception
Details of the user error have been written to diagnostic file

"diags-20031002064006.txt"

which reads:

Error: Access Violation Exception
Stack Dump: RTC.Doframe (int 111); RTC.WinMain();

Currently CSB and the Retunr to Chaos version of DM are OK.

Look forward to your comments :P

Hi there,

Function parameter 111 runs the load code so it looks like there's been a problem trying to open the file (as opposed to the file being loaded OK, but then the code falling over because the contents were corrupt or something) but I don't think I've ever seen an access violation in there before. Could it be that the save game file is being used by another process, write protected, or in a folder you can't write to?

As a general point, I would strongly recommend moving over to V0.24 (the latest version) as a) it's more stable but, from your point of view, more importantly, b) one of the fixes that went in was better diagnostics when problems occur trying to load / save games - I'm sure the sense of irony isn't lost here.

If I can be of any more help, please jet let me know.

Sorry - should have spotted it earlier - you're running from a zip file, which means that writing out / reading from new files will definitely cause problems.

If you unzip the files out to the "real" hard-disk (making sure you preserve the folder structure) then everything should Just Work (TM).

Please let me know if you have any further problems.

Cheers,

George

Glad you commented on that one. I would have made the same reply (zip file, upgrade to latest version) but I had not known the fixes you made from 0.22 to 0.24. BTW is the idea of configuring keys for movement and spells still an option or have you discarded it ?

Thanx for the advice.

I have unzipped the file and placed it on my hard drive (full structure), but I have the same access violation error  .

Excuse my ignorance but where can I get V0.24

Greatly appreciate your help :D

If you start RTC with a link from the desktop or whereever, it may also be nessesary to enter the directory to execute in there (or whatever that's named in English windows), which should be the same directory where the RTC.exe is located.
Beyond that, I also recommend using RTC V0.24. I remember having save/load problems in RTC V0.21, so it may well be that the version is playing a role somehow.

If you still have problems then, please let us know!

Thanx one and all

i will give v0.24 a try and let you know if anything goes wrong.

I am a hardened DM player since Atari days and during my recent surfing exploits I noticed activity on DM 2000.

How far on is this and do you all have input

Cheers

Also make sure that, for whatever reason, the files aren't read only
