Anyone know how to get sound on PC Version?

Post by ratsics »

Hi DM fans.
I have a soundblaster 128 (cheapy version - OEM I think) PCI
and I am having difficulty getting it
to work on my PC.
Anyone know any sneeky ways to get sound working?
I'ts pretty vital for that 100% gaming experience.

Tarra for now...

As far as I have seen, no one has been able to get sound with the PCI based SoundBlasters in Dungeon Master. You could try one of the PC emulators that also includes original ISA SoundBlaster emulation, and run DM through them. I think that will be the way to play old games in the future, just as we use Atari ST and Amiga emulators.

If you run Windows NT/2000/XP you can also try VDMSound that is available here: http://www.ece.mcgill.ca/~vromas/vdmsound/

If you are lucky and get sound, tell us!

I was lucky enough to get my Diamond MX300 PCI sound card to work with DM earlier today (it uses the Aureal Vortex 2 chipset). Here's what I learned...

- Couldn't get DM to work with sound under WinMe. Had to create a bootable floppy disk.
- The boot disk had to load two things, a mouse driver and a sound card driver.
- The mouse driver I used was the Cute Mouse driver available on this web site under the "Games Setup Guide" link along the left.
- The sound card driver was called "AU30DOS.COM" and luckily came with the generic Aureal Vortex 2 drivers I'm using (I'm pretty sure generic Aureal Vortex 1 drivers come with a DOS driver as well).
- The sound card driver and PS/2 mouse drivers conflicted in some fashion. DM would start and play its music until I moved the mouse. I had to switch over to an older mouse which used a serial interface instead.
- I'm not sure if this matters but for completeness I will note that I set my motherboard's BIOS to reserve IRQ 5 for legacy devices instead of making it available for Plug-n-Play use. I had to do this to get my sound card working in WinMe when I built the system.

I plan on getting DM and CSB installed on my notebook sometime before Christmas and will post anything I learn from the experience. I run Win2K on it and will see if I can get the games to work under it. If not I'll certainly be happy to settle for another boot disk. It's a real thrill playing these games once again. Thanks to all the people out there who made it possible!
