Quick Query

Post by Simon »

I was just briefly skimming the DM walkthrough, and it says at the end that the firestaff does 'Invoke', 'Mutate' and 'Fluxcage', and that 'Invoke' is used after trapping lord chaos...

Since on the PC version you don't have mutate, I was wondering does anyone know what it does, and which version of DM its on?

i think it was an translation error from somebody not playing the english version.
the attack options of the firestaff are:
invoke (anrufen in german version)
fuse (verbinden in ger)
fluxcage (forgot germ translation :( )

Invoke is a powerful but random attack spell like fire, poison, gas or lightning.
Fluxcage is a field of energy needed to trap Lord Chaos so you can banish him.
Fuse is a near-range powerful DesEw.

To destroy Chaos you have to trap him in fluxcages (His tile and all adjacent tile must be either fluxcages or walls) and them fuse him.

Thanks for the help - I've compelted dungeonmaster 29358023598 times already though, I was just confused about mutate...

Incidentally, what does 'Window' do, thats on one of the staffs you can only get through dmute (I think I made one once but I forgot what it did or even if it did anything at all).

The staff (conduit) is in CSB as the serpant staff as well. Window allows you to look through walls, like that spell that I can't rememeber...

ohhhhhhh! cunning..

That spell was neat :-)

Only came in useful for the doors on the firestaff level really, never occured to me it was called window...

I wonder if there are any other things like this (maybe some of those potions can be set to do stuff by editing), ie can you bind any spell to an item/weapon?

Fluxcage

Post by PicturesInTheDark »

There is no proper german translation for "fluxcage". Flux means power, energy and belongs to physics (magnetism and such), cage should be clear. So the resulting word would be "Kraftkäfig" in german, which is plain stupid - the most appropriate word I can come up with is energy field or -cage (in german "Energiefeld" or "Kraftfeld").

Well, Flux can also be associated with fluctuation, so the fluxcage prevents Chaos' escape. Although this would imply something circular, I think, I'd choose the German "Bannkreis" as an idiomatic translation.

bannkreis is not bad indeed - I thought more of the energy field, but you're right, this fits better.

just looked up the german translation:
its "zauberkäfig" (=magical cage)
i found out at this occasion that there doesnt need to be a fluxcage on the field, where chaos is standing, only the 4 around him.
btw, any1 ever found out how chaos manages to hide inside of flames?

I have noticed that Chaos won't always reappear right away when he is fused, but that was usually when he was supposed to reappear where my champions were. I don't know about hiding in flames, if he can, if he does, or how (I assume that flames refers to the Fire Elemental monsters).

Not even the four around him, I have fused him in the corner of a room with just a fluxcage either side (walls other sides)

Zauberkäfig is profane, stay with Bannkreis...
