Hello Stuart!
That room is truly a pain in the.... I get stuck there all the time. I dont know the right combination so I must start from scratch all the time. There are 4 switches which makes only 4*3*2*1 combinations possible = 24 comb.
The best way to go is to write them down one by one and by the process of elimination find the right one (hopefully not the last one). It would take about 15 min maximum.
Myself always runs and pushes the bottoms randomly so it can take me the whole day cause I probably try the same five combinations all the time without even knowing it. Well, thats the best I can do!
Good Luck!

From a standing start press the third and fourth ones (numbering 1 - 4 from the left of the door round) to open the way
Each time you press the switch it toggles the state for that switch
The starting states are: on on off off
So you can see why random button pressing will eventually lead to the key being released
If you have already saved in this room after random pressings, then be methodical in your presses and you can cycle through the 16 possible states quickly to get the key

Re: King filius help needed
It was new to me to!
Thanks Beowuuf, I have always hated that room (and it hated me back).
Unfortunately I assumed it was a number combination instead of "on-off" and when that combination was found in some way in the line, the door would open. So on-off gives only 16 way instead of 24, ahh....you got me there Beowuuf.......

Re: King filius help needed
You know, my experience with this room has been completely different from what's been described so far. When I first encountered it, I too thought it needed a specific sequence combination in order to get the key, and I didn't like the idea of trying every possible combination just to find the right one. Then I thought it's probably something stupidly simple, so on my first attempt at the puzzle I pushed the buttons in sequential order starting from the left as you enter, and voila! The wall opened up. It has been exactly that simple every time I get to that part of the dungeon.
That doesn't seem to fit beowuuf's explanation of the puzzle, but it works every time.

Re: King filius help needed
I agree, after a while I noticed the same - pressing the buttons in order opened the wall.
Re: King filius help needed
Oops, been a while since i played it...it's off off on on, not on on off off
So yes, pressing the first two when entering the room opens the wall
And once the wall is opened then there is no deactivating effect, so pressing all four in order wouldn't stop the wall from opening
Sorry about that! Just going by memory, and i remembered it was the ones closest to the writing, thinking the writing as being on the opposite wall!

Funny! When I entered the room first, I instantly thought, that I have to think of 4 bit, trying the numbers of 0 to 15 starting with 0000 proceeding to 1111. I wouldn't have thought, that someone could assume this to be otherwise.

Re: King filius help needed
An interesting puzzle. Can you build a dungeon that
requires the switches to be pressed in the proper
sequence? A prize goes to the solution with the
fewest actuators. The rule is that it must work if the
most recent four switch-presses are in the proper
order. For example if the proper order is "ABCD" then
if you have pressed "ABBABCCDBABCD". the wall
will open after the final "ABCD" and not before. Note
that "ABCCD", for example, should not work. Once
opened, the wall must close again if any switch is
pressed. Decision of the judge is final.
What simple features in CSBwin would make this
task much easier. I'm listening.

Re: King filius help needed
I already tried something similar in an unrealeased dungeon, it was four push buttons that wouldn't all stay in (and hence open a door) unless you pressed them in the right order - otherwise you would find that buttons you had already pressed would reset behind you on pressing the others. Didn';t get back to it to tweak it...
Anyway, interesting challenge...time to dig out some codes and exercise some brain power : ) Watch out everyone, if using actuators they HATE instantaneous signals back to them when they are in use and will freeze out the game. Always leave a delay if you are resetiing a square using a signal that came from it

Re: King filius help needed
Would you call this instantaneous feedback problem
a bug? Is it something that would be useful if it worked
well? If so, can you get a savegame to me so that I
might try and make it work? Or if it is an error in the
design then I might check for it in CSBuild, provide
a warning in the editing stage, and avoid a program
crash at runtime.

Re: King filius help needed
Don't know if i would go so far as to call it a bug...and it won't be something you can check for in an editor as it's the target effect of your target that causes the problem, combined with the delay in that...
I'm not sure why it freezes everything out, to tell you the truth, since surely every action is queued to trigger, so an 'instantaneous' effect reaching back to the source should still have a delta delay attached
If/when i do an entry to this switch comp, I'll do a deliberate bad error dungeon too so you can see
On a related note, actuators aren't limited to the 5/85 configurations I have listed in my hex manual...I've always thought that they probably carried on right up to 85 FF, and I started to double check that and found out yes, they do
I will make note of them at some point, but just if anyone wonders why the list stops, it was because I was only researching the hex codes available at the time, and never went back to it to expand the list
