Cannot get the power gem

I have cast the zo kath ra spell at the door to the power staff. I have put the spell in the door. and......then what?

please help an old ST'er

Incidentally. I remember playing a game called 'Annals of Rome' does anyone else? If so is it available for PC? (unlikely)

Pick up the Firestaff with the cursor/hand and klick on the gem with it.
