DM Sound

Post by PicturesInTheDark »

Has anyone been able to figure out a way to play DM with sound on current computers (no matter which way) that can be used? I cannot get proper drivers and as a former amiga user I do not want to play without sound - pity for all the extra dungeons!

(RTC is a good alternative, but I cannot use the new dungeons there!)

You must use emulators like dosbox (for windows) or dosemu (linux).

CSBwin should work, too. Should it not?
Name a game you want to play and I will
give it a try.

You're right, Paul, however some of the new dungeons are provided as saved games for DM for PC (dmsave.dat), so you can only play them with the PC version. Until someone makes a save game converter.

For the other dungeons (most of them, named dungeon.dat), you can use the converter script that I made in order to use them with CSBwin. The converter is found in the Miscellaneous File Uploads forum.

Well, I think my CSBuild can read the PC saved games.
It is supposed to.
Name one.....and I will try it.

That is good! I have not tried yet...

You can try the following dungeons that are available as saved games in the New Dungeons forum:

I just tried poison.

I posted a Poison.rar at

webpages.charter.net/pstevens1

I just played it long enough to find a key
and escape from the mummies. Unfortunately,
I came upon a dead-end with a switch and decided
I had seen enougn to know that it worked.

If anyone is interested, I can post the latest
CSBuild (to translate DM save-games) and a CSBwin
that can play them.

That would be great! That way, we could supply a package with all the dungeons ready to play with CSBwin. Easier than ever!

I would definitely appreciate that - and it would also allow me to give feedback to some of those who worked countless hours on their dungeons ;)

Thanks, guys!

*now tries to remember if he included sound on certain puzzles incase peopel ever got sound...)
Was unable to (permenantly) kill off ian_scho (Haynuus), Ameena, oh_brother (Westian), money (Falkor), raixel (Petal) and Lord_Bones (Aurek) in the DM D&D game Time's Champions!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THOSE WHO MADE THE GAME WHAT IT WAS - GREAT!

beowuuf: I only tried poison.

I put a new Poison.rar at
webpages.charter.net/pstevens1

Ii has CSBuild (converter) CSBwin (runtime) and
DMSAVE.dat and CSBSave.dat as an example of
a dungeon that was successfully converted.
Also graphics.dat and config.txt to make the
whole thing self-contained.

I should add a note to say:

CSBuild is far from finished......

Please! Report problems. I find that it is sometimes
very hard to get negative feedback. But negative
is much more valuable than positive feedback. Positive
does feel nice.

Here is some negative feedback as you asked :)

Cosmetic: I really don't like the tile graphics used in CSBuild. I find it very hard to read maps with them. I prefer the tiles used in DM Builder. But I understand it is not the most important thing to work on for now, and you could answer me that I just have to change the tiles.bmp file myself...

Another little thing, it would be good to have keyboard shortcuts to change levels: for example page up / page down like in DM Builder.

Thank you. You are right about the tiles....They are easy
to change. Make some nice ones for me and I will
distribute them along with mine. I think they don't have
to be exactly that size. The size was selected to fit
a 32x32 on 800x600. They do have to be square.

Page-up/page-down is certainly on the list of things
to do. Also is needed a way of selecting targets
graphically. Also is needed a mode in which the lines
are reversed....so the lines show all teleporters/actuators
that have a square as their target. Along with a pop-up
to show targeting information across levels. I say these
things to keep everyone else from saying them. ;-)

Hmm - is there a plan to convert the other dungeons? With sound and the ability of using mouse and keyboard simultaneously my motivation to replay and review those new dungeons is much higher...

You can convert them yourself by using the dungeon converter that you will find under the "Miscellaneous Files Uploads".

Re: DM Sound

Post by PicturesInTheDark »

Well - tried it on Beastmaster and BennisDungeon I - both of them were converted properly according to the script message, but CSB crashed when using them. Beastmaster took a while (3rd or 4th floor somewhere, on different places), bennis dungeon I already crashed when i was in the hall of champions.

Is there something I am doing wrong (do I have to use elder versions of csb for example? I now use 9.3) or can anyone suggest what might be the reason?

Thank you,

regards Pitd

Certainly, you should try CSBwin version 9.5. There are
known bugs in 9.4 (and before) that cause crashes.
I appologize for this instability....nothing comes free and
these problems came with the rewrite to allow larger
games.

I have a report from Erik that the dungeon 'poison'
causes version 9.5 to crash. He sent me a recording
so I will be fixing that today. I will post a 9.51 as soon
as possible.

If you can cause crashes with version 9.5 pleas turn on
the recording feature. These things can be fixed.

Very well Paul. I will give it a try - 9.3 was no problem with poison, I could play it through. I will let you know about the ones I try.

The dungeon 'poison' specifies floor decoration
number 3 at cell 2(22,18). There ain't no such
decoration. I have added code to check for illegal
floor decorations. You can find the new executable
at:
webpages.charter.net/pstevens1
file CSBexe951.zip.

When an illegal floor decoration is specified it
will show *NO* decoration.

The same problem is likely to occur for wall decorations.
I'll fix them as they arise. I also want to add a check
in CSBuild to warn about these things.

I suggest you get version 9.51 before playing more
converted dungeons.
