my story...

Post by Nathan Kil »

hey everyone, i just registered under the forums...though i've been here many times, and as a new-comer in this community, i shall share my story. :)

back in 1989/1990, i had an old A500...we played that thing to death. the two games we played were Turrican, and Dungeon Master. at that time, i was only about 8 or 9 years old, and the game scared me to death. the instant i'd hear the footsteps of a mummy, i'd have to turn it off (yea yeah, i was a pansy). over the years, i progressed on the amiga more and more with the games, but my favorite games were always Dungeon Master, and a very good clone by one of my favorite software developers, Black Crypt (Raven Software). now, here i am, 20 years old, and still very avidly into these styles of games. :)

i also want to let everyone know that i've gotten DM to run very nicely on WinUAE, and i prefer it over any of the ports or the 'clones' for the PC, especially RTC, as it isn't the actual game, but instead a clone instead of a port..i think it's important for people to understand the difference between 'clone' and 'port'. anyway, i hope to contribute a lot here...it's good to hear others have great taste in gaming.
that's our blood down there- seems poured from the hands of angels
it will trickle into the ground- in the warehouse so bare and empty
and my heart's number beats- will echo into this room
and fear wells within me that- nothing seems big enough to stay

I was like that too! I made it to level 4 (?) and the pink worm things scared the hell outta me! I used to sit in front of the door and watch them, but for some reason it was really scary!

Looking back I can't imagine why it was scary, although sometimes I still jump if I turn around and am confronted by something gribbley.

I used to watch my dad play dungeon master for hours, but I wasn't around when he completed it, and he refused to tell me what happened after you did!

How I miss my childhood....

my dad too played the game...it was my older brother who beat it though. i have the original Chaos Strikes Back as well, and have been reading it...however, i will be honest; i've never gotten into it...yet! the last time i played it i was 12 i think...and it did me in the moment i started it up with the room full of the armored worms. but now, i'm building a very good group in DM1 and am going to complete it, and transfer them over to CSB...the more i read about that game the more genius and ahead-of-it's-time it seemed, with the idea of the Four Ways and randomly placing items each time you play. remindes me of an early Diablo, no? ;)

Heh, I started on DM when I was 7, and I couldn't even survive the first mummy... of course, it's alot scarier when you can't figure out how to use a torch, much less a light spell. ;)

Think I finally got the courage and properly played the game around 9-10... and I played halfway through CSB until my ST systematically corrupted every save disk. :( No matter, now I've gotten to about the same part on WinUAE... :p

Stuff like the illusionary walls n dragons in ROS, and Deth Knights in general, and that part where you put a skeleton key and hundreds of diabolical demons come out, they still give me the creeps a bit...

Well CSB was definitely ahead of it's time, but I think there was some precedent for randomness. I'm not sure exactly how old ROGUE is, but that is the classic precursor of Diablo and it's pretty darn old. It included not only completely random monster and item spawning, but random dungeon linking as well (much more random than CSB) And I think AD&D had random treasure and monster generation to assist DMs. Although the graphics and puzzles of CSB were not matched. :)

Dang I forgot when I started playing dungeon master. Of course I really can't say much since I started with the super nintendo version(which has nice music).

Thinking about the games being way ahead of it's time...wonder what cause the developers to decide to go "backwards" in time with the games now....

I remember that eye of the beholder was re-released for gameboy advanced recently.

probably to keep people to d/ling the rom version. It seems that way since it took them so long to release rockman& forte(megaman and bass).

Then again it could be popular demand since it's was made in the us.
