Monsters ignoring frontline

Playing with CSBwin, I noticed several monsters (ie: water elementals) can hit the characters in the backline. Is this a known feature in DM and CSB?

In the original DM, yes, some creatures like water elementals can strike any champion in the party.
I have not played enough CSB to answer your question, but I guess it's a common feature too.

I am sure this phenomena was present in the original DMPC, and I think that fire pits do the same as well.
