Why does my computer restart after Interplay sign?????

Post by Daniel (Sweden) »

Hello FOLKS!

I have a little problem with DM2 that I wanted to chare with all of you and see if any of you know the solution. I have just installed a Soundblaster Live 1024 card that works great with the boot disk (great sound in many dosgames). The problem is this:

1. I can setup the sound for DM2 and test it under dos (fine this far)
2. When I run DM2 I see the "interplay" sign and then the computer reboots

This is a mystery to me. If I use the boot disk and choose anoter config, other than soundblaster live, then I can play the game without sound. I get some strange message that says that there are some kind of detecting problems (goes by to fast to read), and then I enter the game.

What makes me confused is that when I have chosen the correct sound config and the sound i tested and fine, the computer restarts after the "interplay" text. Since I can get both the sound and graphics to work (but not at the same time) I guess there is no problems with graphics.
I know from my old computer (where DM2 worked), that the game did change resolution or something during the part where the FTL sign flashed by and during the stormy castle intro, cause the screen jumped at clicked.
It is worth mention that when I chose the wrong sound card with the bootdisk I never get to see that castle intro (it is skiped) so I figured that something mysterious is going on during that period of time (some checking or something). But, how stange it may sound, I can see the full into with interplay, FTL, castle in Win95, with perfect sound and image (isnt that nice). So I cant for the sake of my life figure out why I cant get everything to work at the same time.

What happens during that intro that my computer doesnt like under dos??? Is there something that Im short of (memory?? intelligence??).
Is there anyone that have had this problem and solved it, then please help me Im desperate. The low memory is just fine, I have more soundeffects than ever in other games, so that cant be the problem.

Please Help! Thanks in advance!

Yours Sincerely / Daniel (Sweden)

Daniel, can you try to rename or move to another folder these two files in your DM2 folder:
FTL
INTRO

They contain the FTL logo and Castle animations. They are both executable programs. Maybe they are the cause of the reboot. If the files are not present, the main program will just skip them and run the game directly.
So if they are the cause of the reboot, you may be able to play, just without the animations...

I cannot try this myself as I have never experienced such reboots.

Hello Christopher!

Many thanks for your suggestion. Removing the files brought me in to the game just as you said, and the midi music worked which is the best progress I have had this year. Unfortunatly the gamesound doesn´t work (only music works), I suspect that it is a lack of memory or something? But this was a big step, Im very grateful, it feels like this was the right move.
Is there some way to gain more memory out of the bootdisk from this side? How much memory does DM2 need to work? When I enter dos with the disk there is 590 free, do I need more to get all sound? Both sounds works in the setup though, but in the game I lose the other sound.
Once again a big thanks Christopher, this was the best Idea ever, and it worked. Might there be some limits to the SBLive1024 soundcard?

Thanks in Advance!

I'm not sure, but I don't think your in-game sound issues are caused by lack of memory. DM2 uses protected mode so it should be able to use a lot of your memory, not only the first 640 KB.
I have no other idea, though...
