I've just finished working on my notes to clarify them. It took me more time
than I thought but I think it's much more readable now ^^

Hmmm... I've just found that the bytes 0833 to 1156 describe the
pictures of the different creatures! And you can change the 2 "extra"
colors used by a creature (for example you can say that you want the
worm to be orange, or dark red, or blue, instead of purple ^^)!
I'll add a text file for this very soon.
If you want to translate my notes and add them to the files formats page
it's ok for me! (in fact, I would feel very honoured ^^)

Here are some notes about the creatures (bytes 0265 to 0650, and 0833 to 1156) :

I discovered that the bytes 0595 to 0618 were also used in the calculation of the coordinates at which an item will be displayed, when it is on the floor or in an alcove! I'm working on this now and will modify the text file about the bytes 1457 to 1488 to take account of that...

did a translation of one of them.. just to see if I could. You might want to check it though
I left ins some of the little bits of french that were repeated over and over and over near the bottom since I figured from reading the first few I did change they could tell what the rest was..

Translating it was fast. Like I said using Babelfish can help. However, what took a bit of time was fixing the syntax. Since I'm fairly familliar with french syntax I could read the sentances and more or less know what it should say in english.. so it's ordering of words and sometimes words are omitted as they can be assumed and other times extras are added.. so the translation from french to english is not always easy to read direct from babelfish but it is readable on fro tor the most part. I mean it's not to hard to guess.

Consequently, it's highly possible that you'll find here and there that I tried to say in a very clumsy way something you translated very well... ^^
Well, if I made some really big mistakes or ridiculous substitutions, I allow you to say : "Wow! What a wonderfull translation!"... Hum... more seriously, tell me if it's ok or not.

In your notes, you talk about a second color palette. Do you know where these two palettes are defined and stored?

yes looks good to me.. I now understand better the subtract 100 add 100 thing.. As i think there was a spelling mistake I couldn't figure out.
it said "oter" where i was supposed to put subtract.. Since I had not idea what "oter" was.. I just made a guess.. the wrong one though :/

Hi all,
I've read this doc and discovered that my extracted "item558" file does not exactly match.
For me, byte 265 isn't at byte 265, but at byte 264.
But I lated found that you are counting from 1 instead of from 0.
(and re-edited my own post here

Ah, and, yes, for those who are curious to find the 2nd palette, I am surprised that you didn't
discover it : it's in that very 0558 file, in +650 (byte #651).
There are 13 colors in it, it's in the usual 0777 ST format.
You'll find 6 brightnesses, followed by two bytes which are the color subsitutions for distances
2 and 3 (also coded in *10).

nope I deleted it. I had passed it off to him to use. I figured he could add it to his collection. I no longer h ave a copy of it.
What I did was drag chunks of it to bablefish and then translated the remaining of what it wouldn't (ie typos etc) then put it back together. Bablefish cut the time in half for me rather than doing it by hand.

Ok, I've tried that, and got a good sense of what's going on in these files! 
A big thank you to Charlatan for all this hard work. Having finally taken some time to look at these notes, I can see that you must have spent a long time decoding all this information. It's a great source for anyone who wants to get the most out of CSB4WIN if they are using custom content.
I now understand the palette issues a lot more clearly, and am hoping to put it to good use in a future scenario for CSB4WIN. Something a bit like Zyx's Conflux 2, though probably no where near as devious!
