Making Working boot disk from downloaded rar disk?

Hello,

Could someone tell me how to make a working boot disk for DM from the download that i got from this site? I pulled out the old atartiST only to find that my DM disk had failed. I have the download on my macintosh now but do not know how to proceed.

Just as an alternate suggestion, you could try RTCif you want to play DM on windows without needing to make a boot disk or any other such thing. The maps are the same and you can play it to a very traditional level or you can take advantages of some of the improvements if you like as well. In addition to that you can make your own sounds, graphics, and maps for it too if you like. there is also a CSB map to play.

Then there is CSB for windows which has the Atari version of that game. It too is very traditional with regards to how it plays and works.

Other than that, if you still want to go through the process there is a step by step set of instructions on the Encyclopedia page telling you how to make a boot disk.

In my haste I think I was confusing in my request. I want to be able to play the Atari version "on" my Atari 1040st. The step by step instructions that you so kindly directed me to are for Windows based PCs. I am using a Macintosh. I'm hoping I can somehow create a working disk to play on my Atari.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Dunno if you can format them back to ST disks from the files. you'd have to see if you can find one of the programs that do the .st file format in the firstplace and see if there is a reversal.

Otherwise you would need to find an EMU for your Mac instead.

As I recall, the floppies for the Atari were hardware
compatible with the PC floppies. I just grabbed an old
Atari 520ST disk (A-CALC PRIME by KUMA) and was
able to read the first sector. It had an unexpected format
type but that is easy to tolerate. The sectors are 512 bytes,
the same as PC. I also wrote a program a long time ago
to manipulate floppy sectors without reguard to file formatting.

So, If you have some sort of disk image, we can probably
write it to a floppy using a slight modification of my program.

But......before doing that you might want to ask around
on the various forums at:

I bet someone there would provide the disk you need.

First, thank you both, cow and paul, for replying.

I did try a Mac EMU at one point recently but there was no sound in the game. I always liked hearing the thief laugh at me before I blew his as to bits with a fireball.

I also went as far as trying a PC EMU, running it on top of Virtual PC, which solved the sound issue but the "response and feel" of the game was lagged.

It might just be me but I really enjoy playing DM on my 1040ST. It is the reason I kept my Atari all these years. For now, I will take a look at that site you suggested Paul and hope that I can get my hands on a playable disk.

have you tried DMJava? It should work on your Mac as it's platform independant.

Once again, thank you cowsmanaut. I d/l DMJava, and with the help of my Mac Guru friend, we got it up and running. The graphics are wonderful. And the sound works! Response it just fine.

Now, I hope this is the last question. In DMJava, can I play the original Dungeon Master.

I think someone made a map for that yeah.. Though the DMJ community has been a little dead lately. It was released as opensource When Alandale and I went on to our next game. After that the community didn't really seem to do much and I tried to revive it in this forum but I got out voted and it was reduced to a few threads. So much of what has been done with it lays in the links you can find at the top of the forum (quicklinks) You can search the EZboard forums too for maps. If you find that there is not a DM1 map done yet.. you could always make one with the editor supplied with the DMJ download.

The folks on the St forum seem to think that
you can get the games to run on real STs.

The emulator formats are "Atari formats" and can easily be used on a real ST.
MSA files being more original like though.

Thanks cow, I did find the original map of DM1. Excellent! As far as working with an editor I think that is beyond me. I haven't even gotten to trying to get the editor to run yet.

And WOW. Paul, thanks for that link, I'm going to check it out right now.

ah, i thought it was a general feeling of waiting and seeing how the forums coped with the traffic and larger posts from the encyclopaedia and RTC forum
I agree, the forum over there seems to be fairly dead, even though there has been a relatively recent release of a DM Java dungeon, and other still support what they have released

Go for it if you want to integrate, though i think the fourm there is its own archive. so perhaps only active topics should be taken over, mainly suggetions and announcements - lots of the bugs and 'how do i do...' can probably stay over there

Well Lunever, I go with the community I do not think of this board as mine but rather the communities. There seemed to be a consensus that there was little need for DMJ to have a full section as RTC does because it had been released as open source and more or less left to fend for itself. It's a good engine and it deserves respect and aknowledgement however it simply did not seem practical to have that many sections devoted to it when there were no posts being made in them while RTC was and still is getting regular posting.

So in the end I have to agree that it's fine under the clone category and as it is has not been really been used in anyway to date still so I figure I'll go with the comunity on it and agree that one section is fine for now.

It's just practical.
