I think it must have been the really bad weather which has just let up here - had no trouble logging on just now. Thanks for your interest.

Does this mean I need a different version to play on windows instead of the Linux version?

All of you brilliantly minded people helping others here reminds me of the "gods of ancient mythology" sitting around helping the mortals cope with their day to day lives.

I have been reading some of your posts in other topics and your dry wit and positive attitude to all of us striving to enjoy the game in a new format - without you we would have all probably given up a long time ago.

If any of you visit New Zealand, you can be sure of a warm welcome and an interesting few days at our place! and this is a serious invitation. I have met many wonderful people on the internet - mainrtained friends, and visit eachother around the world from time to time. Met my current husband on the Internet 7 years ago and never looked back - pity he wont play DM.....he is stuck on AOM....the graphics just dont appeal to me prefering of course the dungeons and puzzles etc.

Denise: The original link I gave is for the csb for windows and linux.
I should have given you the root page as Christophe has put a three set guide and link to the FAQ about RAR files.

If WinRAR is extracting everything fine, then you should have the CSB folder on your hard drive. Inside will be a few more fiolders and many files. For Windows play either click the 'Play DM' .bat file, or 'Play CSB' .bat file. A small DOS window will lauch, followed by the main programme

To get the latest upgrade, the dianneandpaul.net page has a link called ConfluxIITest. Download and un-RAR it to a new folder, and csb4win.exe inside you can place into your original game folder to upgrade. Also, the conflux test is a completely playable download (click on csb4win.exe in this case)

Paul: I thought the CSB v9.6 has all the files for Linux play aswell?

No, I think not. There are two separate downloads.
The 9.6 version will not run ConfluxII. Erik has a version
that will work but as far as I know he has not posted
it where we can get it. Version 9.7 is to be released
in a few weeks (as soon as Tomas can get it to run on
the macintosh) and it will run ConfluxII on Windows,
Linux, and macintosh. But again, it will be three
separate doownloads.

OK. I see. The Readme for the Linux version does not say
for what versions of Linux it is expected to work. There
is a separate download for Debian/Linux. Never having used
Linux this seems confusing. Is the one that is packaged
with version 9.6 supposed to work on all versions of Linux
except Debian? Or do they both work but are different
in other ways? Or is the user expected to get the sources
and compile the game for other versions? :?:

I have not personnaly tested the linux version, but from what I know, there is only one linux version of the program which is supposed to run on all Linux flavors. This is the one on my web site, and it should work fine on Debian as well as other linux distributions.

The Debian package available on the other site contains the same Linux program, and it is just supplied in a specific installation package format recognized only by Debian Linux. I think it just allows you to set up the program in a standard way, much like the MSI package format (Windows Installer) for Windows.

I have downloaded the CSBwinlinux again - if I open it immediately I can play the game there and then (without closing the window eg loaded, do you wish to open the file, I open and can play). However, if I close the file and go to my folder and open it from there I get this message:
Windows cannot find CSBtwain and it overides the dos window. I also has that ghastly microsoft :X: which means nothing will get past that. It then tells me it is corrupt.

I'm sorry. I have no notion of what you have
tried or what has happened to you. Did you try to
execute the program from withing the decompressor
window? Did you open CSBwin itself? Did you attempt
to start one of the .BAT files? Are you trying to play the
Windows version or the Linux version?

I am totally confused. Anyone have any ideas what
is going on here? If she is trying to play the Windows
version then perhaps I could post a simpler .zip file
with only the minimum files needed to play DM (or CSB).
We seem to have a communication problem. We both
use English words but something goes awry after that.

I have now found a strangeish way of playing your PC win/linux games. I have also found out how to save it - its quite different to steem, not to mention very fast.

I do speak good english but when it comes to programmes and dos and downloads and RAR and unRAR and upgrades and stuff - its like I am in quicksand.

However, I persevere and sometimes actually get there which is more than most in my position do.

Consider PC's terrified me when they came onto the scene. I got an Atari because is was simple. I persevered and played DM/CSB, all without hint books or even knowing there were more than 1 vorpal blade. Then one day I got a Editor disc and book. I reopened the games up hundred fold.

I can now type 100 wpm WP and operate efficiently many different software packages - programming and IT not being one of my superior subjects. Yes, the IT guys dread it when I ask for their advice too - but were good friends - beer and chocolates help.

Until later, my thanks to everyone.

Denise has written to me privately that she can play
the game and save the game. I hope she can also
resume a game. I still don't know what she is doing.
But she says it works.

The simple answer to "how do I play DM using CSBwin?"
is as follows:

Put the following files into a single folder on your hard disk:

CSBwin.exe
graphics.dat (the one from the "dungeon master-atari" directory is best)
config.txt
dungeon.dat (from the "Original DM" directory)

Double click on CSBwin.exe
click on "DUNGEON"
click on the "ENTER" button
Play.
Right Click in viewport to see inventory
Click on the little floppy disk icon to save
Click "SAVE AND PLAY"
Click on the name of the save file.

To restart a game from a saved file:
Double click on CSBwin.exe
Click on "DUNGEON"
Click on Resume button
Click on save file name

If any of these steps is not clear, let me know.
Perhaps we can elaborate.

This is the way the game was originally designed to
be used. It was made more complicated so that
a single executable could be used to play many different
games with different graphics files, etc.

I am at work at the moment, and have an IT tech reading this. (He is shaking his head and says "this is natural to me") and understands how hard it must be for me, whose mind doesnt find it "natural".

Anyhow, he says I need to go home, make a new folder on the C drive. Then open the .RAR and extract the first file to the new folder.

He agrees, I must be trying to open the executable from the decompresion window.

I am working from a desktop folder also which he says, isnt the best.

I will set up this new C folder and follow the instructions precisely. Have to go away a day or so, so something to look forward to.

Thank you.

Successfully made a folder on C drive and copied over the files (well, kept my fingers crossed and closed my eyes while my husband did it - he wont let me touch his programmes and files anymore).

I can play the game, save it, and resume with no problems.

I notice this game is very fast - instant recoil - and the monsters arent as fierce as I have been playing on Steem (Steem being a very slow engine I guess).

What took me hours to do on Steem - get to level 3, I did in just under half an hour last night. The characters seem to literally 'skip' through the dungeons - is this normal?

I have downloaded all the CSB movies and they are great!!!

Glad you made it work. We need every fan we can get.

What kind of machine are you using? The emulators are
pretty slow on anything less that 233MHz. In fact, that is
the main reason I wrote CSBwin. To get an authentic version
of CSB that was quick. The emulators were slow. RTC was
slow and not authentic.

If you want to slow it down a bit you can. Some folks think it runs
too fast because they were used to the 50 Hertz power in
Europe and I assume 60 Hertz. You see, the timing was
based on the moniter vertical retrace which was synchronized
to the power to avoid horizontal bars due to interference.
The Speed menu is available to make it feel right for you.

Again, congratulations. Glad you hung in there.

computer no.1 (my husbands 'toy')
2.8ghz pentium 4 512 mgb ram HP pavlion flatscreen etc.
lots of whistles and bells dvd recorder/burner, tv etc.

computer no.2
120gb amd k7 130,522 kb ram custom built phllips flatscreen
not as much whistles and bells

computer no.3 (spare) custom built
40 gb pentium 3 256 mb ram

sony vaio notebook so we can take our games with us when travelling.

We have an 8 mgb and 100 mgb sony memory stick with which we can transfer data from either our camera to puter, or puter to other puter etc. using the usb ports

I have no idea how I managed to get the games up and running again - all like a bad dream - and have loaded the folder onto the memory stick and transferred to all my other computers. Just in case.

The CSBwin sword icon shows when you open the file - this didnt show on any of the other versions I downloaded so I guess that may have been a problem. Like it wasnt within the file.

I was watching a Paul and Dianne game last night - CSB, thought it was a fast one but it went on and on and on and I couldnt stop it - eventually I had to turn the puter off manually as ctl alt delete wouldnt work and toggling alt tab didnt work either. Any suggestions apart from checking how long it is?

I can understand why you have time competitions now - playing steem was justlike the old days - plod plod plod and I knew no different until now I am playing your versions. My team seem much stronger and its a much more positive game. Using Sonya and Wuuf.

Learned a lot of tricks like war cry against an opponent to get mana started on low mana warriors and throwing the axe instead of just hacking. Excellent.

Thank you for your perseverance, and for 'resurrecting' the games.

I have never encountered such a thing. CSBwin is a very
simple (from Windows point-of-view) and well-behaved
application. So I don't think it was resposible for such
behaviour. I used to run 9 copies of it simultaneously
for days on end as a screen-saver.

But.....has anyone else seen such a thing happen?

I think thats just computers being temperemental. It happens occaisionly to me, but not exclusively CSBWin. Usually happens when I am running AOL at the same time, but thats AOL for you...
