Atari ST v1.0

Post by Guest »

Hello all, my first post here :) .
I remember when I played DM back in 80's and I am pretty sure I had version 1.0 for Atari ST.
One thing that I don't see mentioned anywhere was that sleeping affected to hp,mana etc.. much MUCH slower than on v.1.2 which my friend had.
I remember that his version was much more easier, because you cold sleep, cast spells and advance your character faster than on my version.

I also noticed that someone mentioned that v1.0 box was different (or was it only firts production run of the boxes ? ). I remember that my v1.0. box was identical to my friends v.1.2. Or maybe I remember version numbers wrong and I had v1.1. , or v1.0. was also sold with normal boxes. Am I totally wrong with this ? :)
I still have box and diskettes somewhere (and my old Atari ST) so I can check this out, if diskette is still playable.

Do you know anything about "one handed" characters? There had been a version, at least there exists screenshots, where your heros could loose/lost one hand.
check that out, maybe you can test:)

Nope, I never lost any hands in my version. In the manual on page 6 there is also picture of character who's missing a hand btw.

Well.. I could find box , (which is "normal") and manual, but could not find a disk..darn. I am pretty sure that diskette is in attic with other ST diskettes, have to check some day.

hmm.. I noticed that my manual is also little bit different than scanned manual here http://dmweb.free.fr/DMManual.htm . Word's, images and pagenumbers are identical, but page breaks are different. f.ex. on scanned manual page "VIII" last word are :

Theron took three steps backwards. "Master?"

on my manual :
sphere with outstretched arms.

Maybe scanned manual is from Amiga version, or there were new print made for 1.1 or 1.2 version for Atari ST.
Interesting ??? ehh.. maybe not :) but I however noticed that when I tried to identify my version of the game.

about the "lost hand": i think that is because there were two-handed weapons included, but were removed later. the onehanded charakter wears an axe afaik. of course that's a raw guess...

@sucium:
i am sure it was not bcs of 2h-weapons; Alex carries no axe, nothing in the remaining hand(Christophe`s scan)
supposed to be a "not able to heal"-wounds

I think this myth perpetuates because of a pre-release screenshot still being on some of the boxes

I'm sure there is a topic where gambit or christophe shed light onto this - as far as i kinow, there are no versions where the damage and carryign have been anything other than the DM we know and love

This old newsgroup post confirms that in the newer versions of the game champions sleep faster:

About the early box, if I remember correctly, they produced around 1200 boxes before the game was finished with screenshots of an early version of the game. When the game was released, they shipped both these "old" boxes and the new ones (both with DM v1.0 inside).
