What is that??
I would like to start off by saying that I love this websight!! I never knew that so many people loved DM as much as I do! Wasn't it brillaint and so ahead of it time!! It has been 16 long years since I have played this game, but I never forgot it and all of my games since have had to live in it's shadow.. Anyway, since I have been playing again I have come across a strange orb of colored dots. I have now seen it in 2 places, once on level 8 after I finished it and I was back tracking, so I was able to avoid it. Now I just finished level 12 and before I go down to level 7 I am training on level 9 by the rat generator. I have been training for a few hours now and everything has been normal. This last time I went to fight I fed all of my characters and gave them water, and then the orb was between me and the rats. I am able to walk through it, and when I do I become engulfed by the blue and yellow and red dots, I can fight and do everything normal. The thing is after about a minute of being by it the game freezes up. I can still move the mouse arrow, but everything else is frozen. Luckily I had just saved. So I went back and fought with no problem, it is only when I feed and water the last character that the orb appears again, and again freezes. I know that I could just go on to level 7 and probably be alright, and I probably will, but what the hell is that thing?? Has anyone else seen this before??
P.S. Instead of who can play the fastest game, I'd like to see who can play the slowest..
Thank you- BlueFox

The game doesn't like being played for an extended time
In elongated games, you sometimes find too many items get generated, leading to new items getting numbered with already existing numbers. This results in some items being cloned - the same potion in two places at once, i've had
This weird glitch is another symptom - i'm surprised you can walk through it, Usually the crash is when the game interracts with a cloned object - I've had games where the game has crashed when a character dies, because then the cloned item they carried perfectly happily crashed the game when it went back onto a dungeon tile
So all i can suggest is don't interract with it! It may be something to do with your food stock, since that is where it is appearing. Start a new pile, and don't touch the old one.

Is that a PC game you are playing? If so, can you ship the savegame
to me? Perhaps we can see what is wrong and clean it up. Then you
can continue to play using CSBwin which should have no such restrictions
on the length of time you can play without problems. And, if it does, I would
like to fix them.

Yes, I'd also like to know what version you play: Emulated Atari or Amiga, and if so which version number? Or MS-DOS-PC-DM? I suppose it's Amiga, because I had those problems years ago playing on my Amiga 2000. The two great windpws-pc-clones CSBWin from Paul and RTC from George don't have these problems I think, or at least should now have them, and if so, I suppose that Paul / George would like to remove such a bug.
Pual & Lunever- I am sort of embarrassed that I am not as computer literate as all of you guys. This is the information I have gathered about the type of game I am playing. It is FTL PC version 1.0 DOS version 7.10, I play the DOS version, unless those 2 are the same thing?? Does that tell you anything? Yes, I am just a girl who uses a computer and has no idea what anything does.. If you guys can explain to me how to send a saved game, I will send it to you. I appreciate the help!
Beowuuf- That is rather brilliant that you say that.. I did have something really curious happen with some of the food in my pile. You see one of my guys died during my training so I had to run down to level 6, as I was doing this I ran into a giggler who I had to hunt down and kill, when he died he left not only what he stole, he also left 4 piles of drumsticks, about 10 in each pile. It resembled the same piles I had accumulated just upstairs from there. I thought it strange because I didn't think that creatures could travel from one level to another, but I picked it up and mixed it in with my collection of drumsticks. Perhaps those were the tainted cloned items. So you think having like 200 drumsticks could be a problem, heh. Thank you for your response.
Purple 1- My first time playing DM I played one game that took almost 2 years as well, I was just 13 then and I remember how much fun it was.. I was scared to turn corners for fear of scary monsters. Now I'm older and it is still taking me forever to get threw it, I have been playing this game for about 3 weeks, maybe a month. I try to make my party as strong as they can be, but it takes forever to build them up. I am very patient though, I can stand and manually punch a wall for hours. Kind of pathetic really.
Thank You- BlueFox

Hi blue fox! You probably know , but here are some tips for training
training in a lower dungeon level gives you more experience! So if you are in level one you get less than in level nine!!
try warcry in front of creatures--> gains you fighter and priest levels.
jab gets you fast fighter levels
it is generally a good idea to train in front of monsters.
throw everything you find, several times. You get ninja levels by using the rope, and also with the stab option.
never leave your mana unused..
happy training!

When I first played CSB I did as you are doing. I fought worms in the
lowest level for days on end. Piled up Worm Rounds to use as food.
Gained a lot of experience. But every time I left my cache of Worm Rounds
and came back some of them were gone. I assumed the game had
a bug. But actually it had a limit. There could only be a maximum number
of objects in the dungeon. And the program was stealing my Worm Rounds
to make room for other things. And it crashed a lot. That was the
Atari version. But the PC version has the same limits.
I went to a lot of trouble to make that limit MUCH higher in CSBwin. Now
it is 8000 instead of 500 (or something like that). And it can be increased
beyond 8000 if necessary.
You have saved your game on occasion, have you not? You should see
a file named DMSAVE.DAT. (or SAVEDM.DAT or something like that). If you
send an EMail to me and attach that file to the email I could maybe fix it
up and arrange for you to finish playing the game using CSBwin. Then you
could take your time and collect as many drumsticks as you like. You could
also look into the game to see where things are, etc. if you don't consider
that to be cheating.

Zoooom- Thanks for the info, I didn't know that stab was a ninja ability. I have been using it because It seem to do more damage then chop. You know I always hear about using warcry and I never do, I will have to try it. Would it help my party to warcry without a monster? Also I read about filling a chest with your heaviest items and throwing that for faster ninja experience, do you think that is true?

Hi bluefox - i think what happened is that whatever item the giggler carried became cloned with one of the new drumsticks instead - and since items are saved in linked lists, then anything below that drumstick also would appear when the giggler died! It's a crazy game like that
Also, you gain more experience with creatuire around than without - this applies to anything. So for example casting a light spell infront of a creature attacking you gives more experience than when normally walking
And yes, there does seem to be a small weight factor in ninja experience. Of course, you have to watch your stamina levels with throwing heavy chests

hmmm. i would not care about the weight issue and just keep throwing all kinds of things. before a closed door or an upwards stairway is a good place(easy recollecting in front of you).
warcry without a creature does improve the fighter skill... if you warcry in front of a creature you gain both fighter and priest skill
( this is a good way to build priest levels very fast in the beginning, even with champions that have 0 mana).

That is one yuckky savegame. Clones in people's backpacks, clones in
chests, clones everywhere. CSBuild only knows how to fix things that
I have seen before. There are a lot of new ones here. So I will be updating
CSBuild for a couple of days before I can attack the clones and send back
your nice, clean game.

Again.....no sorry. You should not wait so long for help. You
must have suffered a great number of crashes to have gotten
the dungeon in such a terrible mess.
I posted heather.zip at:
http://dianneandpaul.net/CSBwin
It has the four files you need to play your game using CSBwin.
Extract the four files to a single directory, run CSBwin.exe,
click on 'Dungeon', click on 'Resume', click on 'CSBGAME.DAT'.
I think we won this round. There are 95 Shanks in one pile
along with a few dozen Gems and Potions. Whenever there
was a problem I erred on the side of duplicating objects rather
than discarding the clones. Hopefully, no important items
were lost but there is no way to know for sure. I played the
game for a while and ate a few Shanks and killed a few Rats
and went up and used the Ra keys. It seems OK.
But remember to report problems quickly. CSBwin is supposed
to work. You should not tolerate errors now that you have
someone to report them to.
