Alternate "war cry"

Post by JCG »

It's something I noticed only recently (*) : it's a male voice for the "War cry" attack !
...not very appropriate when Syra tries to scare a monster.
Is it possible to add a female "war cry" sound for female characters ?

This leads to a small question : the sex of a character can be specified in the RTC editor.
What difference does it make in the game ?

(*) I originally played DM and CSB on an Atari ST and there was no sound associated with the "war cry" attack

It brings feeligns of confusion to characters named 'son of heaven' and causes them to hit themselves over the head going 'why go,d why' (ok, there is actually a good reason for that)

I liked the war cry idea though, though i don't know if it would sound right just pitching it slightly higher. Any women volunteering to yell into a microphone?

Ooh! Me! Oh, wait. I'm not a woman. You COULD just scream in falsetto. While you are playing.

Pretend you are watching a bad japanese fighing cartoon:
Oh, a rock monster! Tiggy! Use War Cry! *high pitched squeal produced by you*

Done for V0.35

Well, I havn't recorded a female war cry, but what I have done is allowed you to specify the attack methods when not having a weapon on a per character basis. You can therefore clone the normal war cry, change the sound then give it as the final attack method to each female character.

As you have no doubt already spotted this actually is much more powerful than the original suggestion. For example, you could give a default attack method of casting fireballs etc to one character which would give a massive bonus to any party with that character in it...makes character selection a bit more interesting anyway!

Oh, whilst I was at it, I also allowed you to change the "hand" graphic on a per character basis, so for example, Hissssa could have a claw graphic showing when he doesn't have a weapon in hand (possibly with attack methods of slash, kick and war cry).

I'm sure your collective imaginations can come up with some better ideas on how to use this in a new dungeon...

What about the cursor itself? Could it be, like, a green clawed hand when Hissssa is leader, a brown furry paw for Wuuf, a small pink hand for those such as Tiggy and Boris, and so on...

Lol, George does cool stuff, and the immediate reaction is always 'ooh, that's cool...could you do this too?'

Hmmm - can do and easy too.

Of course, this would mean breaking the ability to specify the mouse pointer type (ST, Amiga or PC) that you can do already in the options.txt file. Does anyone actually use this though, and so removing this feature would be an issue?

Is that a direct order!

I'll leave it a week or so to give anyone else a chance to read this thread and complain - if I hear no pleas otherwise, I'll change it so that the mouse pointer is a property of the character (and therefore dungeon), not directly configurable by the user.

Personally, I changed the cursor to "ST" on RTC ( I played DM originally on the Atari ST ). Is it possible to keep this functionaly ?

How about, if a dungeon designer specifies a mouse pointer / hand bitmap, that is used in the dungeon, but if they don't, then it's taken from the config file (as it is now).

The default dungeons (DM / CSB) would go for the default behaviour.

Yeah I've always been using the ST cursor since that's what I'm used to. I just thought of the individual hand cursor thing because you mentioned changing the hand graphics and I just kinda thought of it...

George, will the weaponless attack methods be indicated before
character selection or will you only find out after you have resurrected
or reincarnated?
The later wouldn't be so good...you'd have to load up again if you
didn't like the methods.

As for the mouse pointer, Amiga all the way
Claws and furry hands would be cute too.

That's a good point. I could easily change the interface such that the attack methods are shown when you're "in" the mirror though.

Now done.

As it happens, this has the neat side effect of being able to see the attack methods of weapons a mirror character is carrying too...
