The "Google for WMD" topic (http://www.dungeon-master.com/forum/vie ... hp?t=23955) could help explain how Google works.

Placing this joke page as #1 Google result for WMD, as well as placing Gerorge W Bush's official biography on the White House website as #1 Google result for the keyword "failure", was achieved by way of a "Google bombing". See http://www.wordspy.com/words/Googlebombing.asp

Google bombing requires nothing but lots of links pointing to the particular webpage you want to raise in the Google results, and containing the keyword you want to connect that page to.

if you want to raise the DM forum in Google results, everybody on this forum must link to it on their own sites using the words Dungeon Master or Dungeon Master forum (only "Dungeon Master" if you want it to come up first for that particular search).

Use this code (example text, just keep the anchor tag intact) :

Code: Select all

The <a href="http://www.dungeon-master.com/">Dungeon Master</a> forum is a great place to discuss the world's best video game!

Do you want me to put a large disclaimer that these forums are not part of my web site? Other ideas ?

well, to be honest.. I would say in a way they are now a part of everyones website. I mean you, George, Ian, and myself we all plunked out own forums into one place. So as far as I'm concerned if they find your website they'll find this one. As I said before it's a community that's why there are so many administrators... rather than just plain assigned moderators. I wanted each of you who have run your own communities to feel that is as much your place as it is mine.

I agree with you, cowsmanaut, however Gambit was pointing out the fact that some visitors may believe that these forums are part of my web site, which is not true. I agree with that too.

However, I am not sure that a disclaimer would solve the problem, and it may sound weird to visitors, that is why I asked for other people opinions on this. If we all agree that I should add a clear statement then I'll do that. I just want to discuss it before changing things.

It's probably not a big deal really -- if new users come here to discuss a download or something, not realising that the forums are on a different domain, we all know the content of your site so well that anyone can help out. I was just pointing out how it might be confusing for some users.

While it is a bit disconcerting when someone launches into the forum sayign somehting doesnt' work or can't download, I think the community is so integrated now that it doesn't really matter, and that in effect we are the continuation of the encyclopaedia : )

Speaking of forums, it seems that the DMJ one really has died now...before there were the occasional new person or sometimes a few, but there doens't seem to have been anything for months. *rubs hands at another OT post*
