People still play Dungeon Master afterall? Alright!

Wow, I thought this was a dead game... seems I'm plesantly surprised. o_O So, I got the CSB/DM Windows clone by that Paul dude, but I also have the original DOS versions and DoxBOX all set up and working great. Now, I'm aware of most of the diffrences between the two, but does the char editor still work outta curiosity?

Hello and welcome to the forums! Yes, people still like the game after 20 years...kinda heartwarming, kinda scary really : )

Which character editor are you speaking of? The CSBuild one won't work with PC DM, but there are a few editors like DMute that edit PC games

Yeah DMute's the one I have, so that works for DMWin/CSBWin huh? Is there a way to create an item outta thin air in your inventory? It's plenty easy to switch one item to another, but....

Would creating a Zokathra in DM work to then use the editor to switch it to a diffrent item? o.O

DMute is a neat little editor for the PC version, but CSBuild and CSBwin are a bit newer and have more features. Beo wrote a guide for DMute, whilst CSBuild sorta has dialogue boxes that tell you when you have gone wrong, It really is a follow your nose editor and does the job marvellously.

I would suggest reading some of the older posts 1st.

You cannot DMute a CSBwin dungeon - too many features I'm afraid. But apart from charatcer editing the editor it comes with is so powerful you can drop whatever items you like at a champion's feet

You can only mutate objects in DMute, hence the name - so no zokathras out of thin air there

Righto! Uh, hey, how do you get back to the save select screen in DM/CSBWin anyways? o.o

Unrelated question: Is there a chatroom somewhere for DM? XD


EDIT: And how does one char-edit CSB/DMWin char files anyways? XD CSBuild doesn't seem to be a char editor...

There is a chat room in this forum - look in the top right corner of the screen where there's a bunch of various links. The one you want is Flashchat. It logs you in with your forum user ID. If there's no-one in there (and there often isn't), wait around, just leave the chat up and do something else. Eventually someone or other is bound to show up, and the chat room makes a noise when they do so :).

There is no good character editor for CSBwin, because no one has made it. Paul has offered lots of help to anyone who wants to undertake such aa task, but doens't have the intention to do so himself. Use the search function up top in the CSBwin forum for related posts

Basically, for CSBwin, you need to edit charatcer portraits from the start. You do this through creating or editing the floor text infront of a champion mirror, and selecting the tick box

Or you can get RTC which enables you to use any pic as a character portrait as it doesn't have restricted colours (you can only use 16 colours for anything in CSBWin), so you can use any image you like as long as it's the right size.

Righto. thanks guys! Another question that comes to mind, what about training? o_O So far I can't seem to figure out any consistant ways of improving the four skills. I've got the basics of it down but I just started Floor 3, and I'm getting preeetty well owned by things due to not knowing how to gain Fighter levels short of fighting. (My two fighters currently can't handle most anything on that floor and I'm running out of food and such waiting for things on Floor 2 to respawn... if they even do.)

Also, is there an effective way to survive without food if I do run completely out? Because at this rate that's whats going to happen.

You have to do it infront of monsters for most experience (in anything). Punch alot and throw to gain ninja levels for extra health. Stretch yourself (cast highest spells). Go as deep as possible.

For food you can cast stamina potions to stop the stamina drain. Just don't get into the red with water too

Alright... hrm, any way to do fighting near a monster without actually fighting them? All of the monsters are currently simply too strong, I simply can't defeat them without someone getting killed and having to trek back up to the nearest VI Alter. But, nothing seems to respawn that's weaker so I have no way of gaining said fighter levels...


What happens if your water runs out at the same time as running out of food?

Your stamina falls to half with no food. and completely no stamina with no food and water. So basically at low levels you would have no way of keeping up the drain on multiple characters

Fighting - move around! Pull a creature into a large area, then dance around them, keep at the back of them, and attack. If you are standing toe to to, or falling back a little in tight corridors, you will keep taking damage.

Also, preparation - have health potions ready in your charactter's hand so you can quickly gulp them down

Ah-hah, so far I seem to still be dying pretty routinely, this might be because I always reincarnate my chars for the extra stats? 'though by now both my fighters are Journeymen Fighters and my Wizard and Preist are Apprentices, 'though throwing things doesn't seem to wanna build ninja skills much if at all...

And how does one kill those rock monsters within any reasonable amount of time anyways? they always take forever to kill.

Journeyman is about as high as you should be at that point. Ninja levels do take time, but you can train them by fighting rock monsters - just punch them with the bare fists. This is a lot faster than hitting them with weapons, but be careful of their poisonous bite. You could also cast fireballs or poison clouds at them, but watch out they don't move out of said cloud. Your best bet would be to wait until they move and then cast the poison cloud, because every monster has a cooldown after moving before they can move again.

Tips on fighting stuff and gaining levels from my personal experience - this is how I like to do things. Other people do stuff different and other stuff may work better, but this is how I like to do it...
Fighting monsters that hurt - Unless it's a spellcaster, doors are your friend! Lure a monster under a door and close it on its head, then smack it as much as you can before it retreats.
Dying a lot? Either you're letting yourself get hit TOO much, or you just happen to have picked weak characters. Every character can become proficient in every skill if you are willing to train them at it enough.
How to gain skill levels - You gain more exp for stuff if you are deeper in the dungeon, and also as has been said above, you gain more if you're fighting monsters at the time.
How to gain exp for each level?
Fighter - Hit stuff. Get hit (includes bashing into walls, falling down pits, and having doors close on your head).
Ninja - Throw stuff. Punch/kick.
Wizzy - Cast Wizzy spells (Fireball etc).
Priest - Cast Priest spells (potions etc). Warcry.

Nowadays I only bother to train one person up in Priest skills. Dunno why. If anyone ever dies I just reload my last save. And I save a lot anyway so that's no biggy. Ninja levels I normall neglect till, like, level nine or so, when I just grab something heavy like a boulder and repeatedly chuck it (it lands on the same square due to its weight so I don't have to move to pick it up again) until that person has some Ninja levels. Then I switch to another char and repeat.
I'm not sure if getting hit by a spell counts as Wizzy or Fighter exp. I hate caster mobs anyway :P.
Yes, those Rock Monsters are a bloody pain at first - I use the nearest door and/or a few Fireballs to take them down since they hurt quite a bit and of course the poison is annoying. Mind you, try not to take too much of a clout from the Blue Trolls too - at the first time you meet them there on level three, they are rather painful.
Need more food? I don't know if any of the Screamers on level two regenerate, but if you can survive a little longer you will find the first regenerating food source DM has to offer.
Need water? You should have a couple of water skins by now, and there are plenty of fountains on level two if you need to backtrack and refill, since I don't think there's any on level three.
One last tip on fighting - if you're fighting a tough mob (melee or caster, doesn't matter), of which there's only one, try and pull it to an area in which you can kite it. Just a spot of 2x2 squares is good enough. Then basically hit it and sidestep, then turn to face the sqaure you just left. When the mob steps into that square, bash it int he side a few times before it turns. Then sidestep again, and turn. And so on. In DM there's really only one mob on whom I use this technique, but it works well and it's very useful, as long as there's only one mob there at the time - otherwise you'd just get hemmed in and clobbered or chewed to death ;).
Hmm I think that will do for now. Oh if you hadn't noticed, I kinda tend to talk rather a lot ;).

I thought this was a dead game...
DM dead? Just look at the "custom dungeon" forum thread. Many people creating their own dungeons using editors like CSBuild or RTCeditor (as me for example, but it`s hard work!).
If you`re lurking on the "flashchat", I wish you a lot of patience.. sometimes there`s no person to talk with for an hours!

I sse there is a chat channel on IRC as well for Dungeonmaster. 3 ops always logged in (Rain. sucinum & Parunexus) but never any one actually there. makes flash chat look crowded! Does anyone ever use it ?
